The First Time I Heard Run-DMC

You might have been listening to them on 98.7 KISS. That's where I first heard them, also in 1983 whilst attending Music & Art HS when it was still on 135th St and St. Nicholas Ave.

And it was (appropriately enough) "Jam Master Jay" instead of "Sucker MCs" that blasted my consciousness first. Maybe you even remember a KISS promo verse that Run-DMC inserted in that song: "If you want to hear rap like this / Turn your dial to a station called KISS."

They were my proper introduction to hip hop, in high school, as a Chinese kid in a graduating class where two-thirds of the student body were Black and Latino. Keeping in step meant that you memorized songs like "Problems of the World Today", "F-R-E-S-H", and "Rockbox".

If every phase of a person's life has a soundtrack, then Run-DMC would play prominently when "screening" my high school years. Their sound fueled the image I had of NYC in the early 80s as some urban, gritty netherworld that to any 16 year old kid frequenting the city for the first time, would find a little bit threatening but very exciting.

If that sounds like an early incarnation of "hip-hop-as-fantasy-world-and-safe-haven-for-non-whites" then, yes maybe it was a bit. Still, that does not lessen the impact of my entire urban high school experience, or what Run-DMC ultimately meant and still means, to me. Ironically, attending an arts school in Harlem, meant that I managed to avoid my mostly white zone high school in Queens, where "race riots" erupted on a weekly basis. Safe haven, indeed.

On a parting (and depressing) note, perhaps you would also recall around 1983-84, a vicious rumor arose that Jay was murdered, possibly over some beef or even for his Cazals. When I first heard the news of his real death over a year ago, I immediately flashbacked to that time and thought, Oh my god, we lost him TWICE.
