April 18, 2003Jack White Disses Hip-HopAs quoted on okayplayer, here are the words of Jack White of the White Stripes, in the latest Rolling Stone: RS: You're not a hip-hop fan. No wonder I find his music so dull.. Coincidentally, I just discovered that Simon Reynolds has a blog, and his recent post about the Stripes sums up my feelings perfectly. He also thinks to another cool blog that deconstructs their latest album in much greater detail. EDIT, 8/7/03: I hate to do this, but I'm closing the comments on this post because all you soccer hooligans don't know how to act (on both sides of the argument). Perhaps my flippant approach to the subject (as opposed to my "serious" commentary here) combined with a high ranking in google was a deadly combination.. braggadocius? WTF? Posted by: nshgrl at April 18, 2003 1:32 AM I wonder how he feels about being one of a number of homogeneous throwback bands whose names begin with a definite article. Posted by: Null Khansenses at April 18, 2003 1:35 AM In defence of Jack White, since when is having an opinion so bad? And so what is he dont like Hip Hop...just because Jack doesnt like hip hop, it doesnt mean everyone has to start disliking the guy and his music now cmon...everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. I dont consider his comment a diss, its an opinion so take it for that. And one more thing "nsh girl", hip hop is braggadocius. Thats one of the foundations it was based upon...who was the better person...competition, battling, etc... Whens the last time you heard a rapper saying they were humble? Posted by: Ease up Bucks at April 18, 2003 3:42 AM Who said having an opinion is bad? I specifically avoided making this one of my STFU posts because I didn't think that was appropriate for a statement of someone's personal taste. He has every right to his opinion, and nobody here is denying that. But just as he has a right to voice his opinion of hip-hop, I have the right to disagree, and to voice my opinion of his derivative, bass-deficient offerings. Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 18, 2003 3:50 AM Well its misleading when you have as the title, "Jack White Disses Hip Hop". More like it should be, "Jack White has an opinion on Hip Hop". And the first reaction everyone has is backlash...ie. the braggadocio wtf comment and the homogenous throwback bands comment - hence the "jack white has differing opinions so I must voice my distaste in him" attitude I got. Ahh well...beef and petty politics are all that seems to perpetuate hip hop culture nowadays anyways. Posted by: Ease up Bucks at April 18, 2003 4:05 AM Yeah...so hip hop is braggadocious. Does that mean it's not music or that it lacks emotion? Sure...he has a right to voice his opinion, and he does have a right to dislike hip hop, but how does a musician make such a generalization about an entire musical genre? But you know what, why don't we talk about the fact that The White Stripes are garbage (In MY opinion). What was that word? Homogeneous? Yeah...that about sums it up. I can count on my fingers and toes how many songs by "real" rock bands they've ripped off. And "White Blood Cells" sucks. Posted by: Toni at April 18, 2003 4:11 AM Ease up Bucks: Don't be silly. You are really twisting yourself in knots to support your boys, if you are unable to admit that he expressed a negative opinion here. A negative opinion backed by several broad blanket statements. And when somebody makes such blanket statements about something you love, you are going to be bothered by it. You proved right here that this is just as true for you as it is for us, particularly with your sulky final remark. Jack White expressed a negative opinion of us, and we expressed negative opinions of him. Ours were no more harsh than his, but you are judging ours by a very different standard than you judge his.. because it bothers you that we are speaking critically of something you like. And that's only natural. But you need to get real about that, and step off of your high horse. Jack's a big boy, I'm sure he can take a few lumps, and if he can't take it he shouldn't dish it out. Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 18, 2003 10:48 AM haha, well I'M totally dissing White Stripes and all those other, corny nu-rock bands. They all suck. the who rules. so does biz markie. Posted by: becca at April 18, 2003 1:51 PM In other news, Jack White admitted that he is the mystery speaker in the last 30 seconds of the song "Long Island Degrees" by De La Soul. Posted by: Matt Wood at April 18, 2003 2:01 PM Jack White is a fucking Robert Plant wannabe who needs to get a tan! This motherfucker got hit with a motherfucken ugly stick and his music is a ripoff of old rock. Unoriginal and a complete carbon copy of old rock!! Posted by: Elaine at April 28, 2003 5:38 PM Yes Mr. White is awfully pale. I think Meg is kinda cute though, actually! Posted by: jay smooth at April 28, 2003 5:57 PM he's right Posted by: andrew at May 3, 2003 12:19 AM WOW you called him pale! Thats gotta hurt..? Who cares if hes pale? it looks better then being all nasty tanned anyway. His music doesn't suck either, especially when everyones calling him a new legend in rock..... ;) niiiice.. Posted by: MJ at June 17, 2003 11:35 PM i think he was dissing the whole mtv hip-hop and not the underground scene. Posted by: Down2ride at July 28, 2003 7:14 AM jack white is cute, and hip hop has no instumental feel... so cold, and I doubt eminem can sing. Posted by: doll at July 29, 2003 3:06 AM jack white is cute, and hip hop has no instumental feel... so cold, and I doubt eminem can sing. Posted by: doll at July 29, 2003 3:06 AM Who cares about Jack White and what he said about hip hop? I argue everyday with someone about the subject (i'm pro, he's con). Is Jack White that important in popular culture that this argument must go on? McCartney and Clapton said roughly the same thing in the early-80's about hiphop,"too much bragging, no artistic integrity, etc." These remarks are from guys straight jacked blues songs and whitified them a'la Pat Boone. However, they did move on to do much better as they grew artistically. For Jack White, it remains to be seen, I personally don't like his avantgarde post-punk trash or whatever you want to call it. He can fuck with the Flaming Lips but that's another topic and another website. Peace, love and hair grease, y'all. Posted by: pexdiggy at July 29, 2003 8:10 AM can't fuck with (the Flaming Lips), that is. Posted by: pexdiggy at July 29, 2003 8:11 AM Hey can you blame him? I think he was 100% correct. Don't hate him because he is speaking the truth, listen more closely to hip-hop and you'll agree as well. Posted by: XaQ at July 29, 2003 4:05 PM I'm not blaming him for anything except for criticizing crappy hip hop while he's putting out crappy rock. And how did I get into this mess? For finality, Fuck Jack White and let's move on, shall we? Posted by: pexdiggy at July 30, 2003 8:20 AM steve albini said some similar things about hip hop in an ego trip interview. no matter how dope we think hip hop is, i still think a lot of the criticism is valid. hip hop has problems like very genre. rock's problem is that it overly emotional. read what Jack says above and note how his criteria for good music is emotion. of course, the bottom line is that the white stripes make very good, but exceptionally unoriginal music. and, ironically, not very emotional. Posted by: eric at July 30, 2003 5:01 PM Jack white u White fuck kiss my White ass bitch u white nazi die motha fucker Posted by: malcom2g at August 2, 2003 1:31 AM one of you faggots tell me who the white stripes are copying? how are they unoriginal? rap is unoiganal its all the same bnch of bullshit. Posted by: rapsux at August 2, 2003 9:26 PM Okay enough already, this thread is turning into a Jerry Springer episode. Can't we all just get along? Jack White even has a Hip-Hop song coming out later this year, with Nikka Costa and Freeway. And all these bad vibes are messing up my chances at getting a date with his drummer. Posted by: Jay Smooth at August 3, 2003 3:30 AM Hey Jay, Posted by: pexdiggy at August 4, 2003 7:48 AM Rock and Roll will never die, Rap/Hip Hop sucks, Posted by: DMAn at August 5, 2003 8:30 PM That is so true, D-Man, anyone who uses modern technology to make music is clearly a homosexual. Posted by: Jay Smooth at August 5, 2003 8:45 PM jack white is fucking talented, has a raw worked up voice, his songwriting kicks ass, also no fucking asshole should be allowed to compare two completely different styles of music, rock and hip hop do not mix, just cause he doesnt particularly like hip hop doesnt mean a bunch of idiots can bitch about what the guy likes or doesnt. Posted by: 2star at August 6, 2003 6:01 AM this is a blog. People can can or, at least, should be able to opine on anything. If Jack White gets dissed for comments on hiphop so be it. If he praised hiphop so be it. The point is his music still sucks to me. and for modern technology associated with shitty music. Let you're favorite band go unplugged for the next 4 albums, chief. will you still like them? Posted by: pexdiggy at August 6, 2003 8:03 AM if it weren't for the fact that people still equate RAP = BLACK PEOPLE and ROCK = WHITE PEOPLE... we would have so much less to bicker about. and certainly the names "Jack WHITE" and the "WHITE Stripes" seem to back this up. I say everybody is a racist homosexual on this post... a potent combination, i might add. Long live this stupid post! Jay Smooth for Jerry Springer's VP in 2004!!! ps. jay i still need the link. ;) Posted by: eric at August 6, 2003 4:08 PM I like rap and the white stripes and if you can't take a little criticism, you're a fat pussy.
