April 14, 2003NEW AUDIO: Guest DJ Chairman MaoA new mix posted in our radio show archive Jeff "Chairman" Mao is well known as a founding member of the Ego Trip crew, and all-around top hip-hop journalist. But you might not know he is also a top-notch DJ and vinyl collector, and spins regularly at one of NY's trendiest spots, APT (where our own DJs Monkone and Emskee hold fort every wednesday night). The Chairman showed us just how deep his crates are when he stopped by the radio show last month, and dropped a set of insanely rare 12-inches from the mid 80's. I just uploaded his entire set to the mixshow archive, take a listen and see how many songs you can name. I'll be impressed if anyone can identify even 5 of them. Oh and here are a couple of pics: one - Chairman Mao on the wheels, as Tomkat and Monkone look on. Comments
Wow, that whole show was like a flash back! I was in grade school when many of those tracks were playing in the background. If I close my eyes, I can almost see my friend doing headspin for the first time... I can't even name most of those tracks, I just recognize them. I was never good at remembering track names... Being a DJ, I envy Chairman Mao for having such an extensive collection of vinyls. Big ups to Chairman Mao and Underground Railroad. Very nice!! Posted by: DJ Musashi at April 14, 2003 4:02 PM This is hot shit. Bravo Jay Smooth. I heard these songs before, but I can't put a name or a song title to any of them. It brings back memories for me. Block parties and basement jams -- all kinds of memories. I'm smiling as I'm hearing Chairman Mao's set. Dang. This is good. Posted by: Trent at April 14, 2003 4:11 PM Listening to that set by Chairman Mao almost left me misty-eyed. The first thought that came to mind upon listening to the first few tunes was the"DNA-Hank Love Radio Show" on the former WNWK (before that, WHBI). It was so worth it-- my brother and Itrying to stay up late on a Saturday night, freezing wet hand towels and then applying them to the bases of our necks whenever the burning sensation of sleep approached (around 1:35 am)! From 2 to 4, we would just be blessed with hip-hop--good, bad, ugly, it did not matter! It was encouraging to hear hip-hop on the air, period! If you've never heard the classic 'Billie Jean' hair salon commercials, then you've missed a component of underground hip-hop radio! Does anybody remember Majestic Productions--Hank Love, Alemo(the A, the L, I rock very well...),and Half Pint(not a quarter like a burger...)? How about"Drop Method"? They represented the subterranean artists who, whether they were considered dope or garbage, kept hip-hop moving. And to top it off, the immortal Awesome Two show aired right after, from 4 to 5. Wasn't there another host beside Special K? I think that his name was Donald D, or B, or something. Anyhow, it is suffice to say that those Saturday nights of my childhood were well-spent. With all of that being said, here is the beautiful thing: I can barely remember 3 of the songs of that set. It would be unfair to ask for titles. I remember that "Good Thing Goin'" song, that "It Is What It Is" song by Yogi Bear and Tim Scratch( I believe they were down with Hurby Luv Bug in his moment of dominance), and the song by Sir Fresh and DJ Critical with the bassline used By BDK in "Word to the Mother(land)". That song was the 'B-side' to the super-duper fly cut "Get'em, Hit'em and Sit'em Down", where the cat rocked the "My Prerogative" AND the "I Know You Got Soul" samples together! And these artists were part of the DNA-Hank Love family! As far as the Queen and the 45 King of Swing goes, I can only scratch my head and wonder how on earth can there be a Flava (Flavor, whatever) Unit without DJ Mark the 45 King? Jay Smooth, this is good for the soul, my soul. Thank you. Posted by: bitter monk at April 15, 2003 11:08 PM When I hit play on real audio, my arms were folded daring to hear and name the challenge of old tracks, then I quickly unfolded them. Chairman Mao was and definitely a fan of the DNA Hanklove show. Most of the tracks he played were directly from it. I cant believe those 12 inches even existed. The person above was right the show took a big turn when it got bought out but they will be missed. I remember staying up ALL Nights to listen to. (rotation did change so bear with me, Im going way back). 1. Awesome Two (Teddy Ted & Special K) Major Props To Chairman Mao. Posted by: Max-Jerome at April 16, 2003 11:16 PM you never know what people do. i mean i knew mao had a passion for music, but never knew he dj'd. saw these cats "ego trip" cats this past weekend in seattle at the EMP Pop Music Conference. They have some interesting opinions on hip hop. At times I found them humorous, and other times right on point. I think though of them all I understood mao most. jay you get to do really cool stuff. Posted by: lynne at April 17, 2003 1:03 AM (laughing)..i wasn't even going to put my thoughts on here..but after seeing what the Brothers wrote, (sans the "Marly-Marl/Pete Rock" comment), i had to say something..Monk & Jerome KNOW their history..& i commend them for speaking upon it..ya' know..THAT'S the problem with "HIT POP"..it will NEVER understand what TRUE hip hop is about..& it never will..hip-hop is NOT 1) BLING BLING..2) HO'S dancing around with no clothes on..3) million dollar houses..4) CORPORATE PROPERGANDA..we (real hip hop fans) need to take back what's ours..& the rappers, because their NOT MC's, need to tell corporate AmeriKKKa NO!! if the White rock artists can do what THEY want in THEIR vidoes..so should we..& if enough people say no to them..they'll have to comfirm to what we want see as TRUE HIP HOP..that way..the culture will get passed along the CORRECT way..MC'ng..DJ'ng..Breaking..Dancing..Graffiti..& Ghetto "Entrepenueralship"(sp)..LOL..i just wished that people could go back to '83, '86, 88, & '90..they would see that these SUCKER MC'S couldn't live a day with those wack rhymes & casio beats..& also..they would know that the Sugar Hill Gang, Run-DMC, or Eminem did NOT invent hip hop..King Tim III was the FIRST rap album on wax..KISS FM & WKTU were the hip-hop stations in NYC..Grandmaster Flash battled Grandwizard Theodore in the Bronx..the Sugar Hill Gang took the Cold Crush Crew's whole routine..& lastly..Puffy did NOT invent the "remix"..Kid Capri invented the remix..& don't EVER forget that..Peace..& to all hip-hop heads..say NO to these corporate sponsors..they do NOT love rap..& they don't love you..ONE LOVE!! Posted by: A-Weapons at August 4, 2003 12:26 AM A-Weapons is correct with the Puffy comment. So is it safe to say He's the Al Gore of Rap? However, he did have Capri roll with him on tour. So maybe Puff can say He bought out the guy who started the remix thing. By the way, I was listening to the first Brand Nubian album and on the last song "Dedication" or livication for you rastas, Puff gets a shout out after they give a shout out to Dr. Jeckyll. I think that was when Puff was on Uptown.
