April 6, 2003Photos: Jean Grae on the RailroadA pleasure to have Jean Grae on board last night, one of the smartest, most creative emcees around. She kept us cracking up with her ongoing crusade against big hats, and let us world premiere 2 new songs, including a remake of Jay-Z's "Excuse Me Miss" that was pure hilarity. I'll post some audio tomorrow, but for now here is photographic evidence. The third pick is Jean and her betrothed (with Democracy Now's office in the background): ![]() ![]()

I'm so jealous of you Jay Smooth. I'm gonna start "playa-hatin'" on you. Ha! Ha! Jean Grae is about to get married?!?!? Awww, daammn. I wanted to marry Jean. Ha! Ha! I love Jean Grae -- she's one of the most important voices in hip-hop, right now. I love her "Big Hats" essay. Don't mind me. It's just creative wishing on my part. Yo! You need to get rap trio Little Brother on your show. These guys are absolutely D-O-P-E!. Their CD, The Listening, is -- my opinion -- the first great hip-hop CD of 2003. And get the Def Jux crew, too. I keep hearing people say that hip-hop sucks and that there's no creative rappers out there in the game. While I understand why some people are disenchanted with hip-hop -- the commericalism, the wackness, the bullshit, failing our youths, etc. -- your show is a breath of fresh air. Major props to y'all for showcasing artists who are doing their thing . . . Hip-Hop Is Not Dead . . . It's Just In Another Spirit Let me end this . . . PEACE! Big-ups to you and your crew! Posted by: Trent at April 6, 2003 6:17 PM Yeah Jean is great, i'll get the audio up as soon i can for that.. Little Brother should definitely be on the show in 2003, we've been in contact with them via okayplayer.. El P has been supposed to come up for a while also, I'll be asking about that again soon. I'd love to have ms. dynamite, I dunno how easy she'll be to access. :) Posted by: jay smooth at April 7, 2003 5:46 PM Jean Grae is one of the nicest MC's out of the last golden era of the Underground. I would have asked her how she felt about Mos, Kwieli and J-live getting mainstream burn and where she felt she fit in today's landscape. I'm sorry I missed the show. Posted by: big Family at April 7, 2003 11:22 PM I'd love to hear the Excuse Me Miss parody. Bet it was dope. I love this girl man. She had one of the best album's of the year.
