Platinum Goes Aluminum
UPN's much hyped "Hip-Hop Drama" Platinum, which sparked a lively discussion here last month, seems to have met its demise.
Platinum Gets Cancelled
The hip-hop drama "Platinum" has not been renewed for the fall season, representatives for UPN confirmed with AllHipHop.com. After starting with near record-breaking ratings, the show’s Nielson status plummeted.
“Its not coming back next year,” a rep for UPN said, "The ratings were the same as 'Haunted' was when we cancelled it last year."
"Platinum" was a hip-hop family saga based on two brothers, Jackson and Grady Ellis (Jason George and rapper Sticky Fingaz of Onyx), who ran an independent record company.
The Sophia Coppola-produced show was a huge success initially, garnering it extremely high reviews and generated significant controversy for its content. Even mogul Russell Simmons spoke out in support of the realism of the plot.
The show delved primarily into the seedy underbelly of the music industry, something that Naji [sic] Ali of Project Islamic H.O.P.E. said was the curse of the show.
"If they were true to making a real hip-hop show, they wouldn’t have focused on the negative," Ali told AllHipHop.com. “We are vindicated.” When the show debuted Ali and his organization proposed a boycott of the show if the creators didn’t attempt to change the content...
This show didn't spark enough interest for me to keep watching after the first two episodes, but I'm not happy to see it disappear so quickly, and I'm skeptical about Najee Ali's claim that his protests are vindicated by this result. As far as I can remember, commercial television has never gotten comfortable with any Black oriented show that wasn't a straight-up sitcom, from Frank's Place on down to City of Angels.

Just as I thought. No surprises here. I'm glad another trash got taken out of TV. But there are more trash that needs to be taken out (like those reality shows, isn't all just about the same?). Congrats to Kevin Bray!! Hey Kevin, do you see this?! You got CANCELLED! Join the unemployment line like everybody else!

It could have been a good show. It had a good concept but the problem was just that it was badly written in my opinion. If HBO had produced the show... it could have been completely differint.

I agree with Jay. Didn't like the show too much but I certainly don't like how it was cancelled so soon. Look at all of the other trash on tv that survives!
And I was just speaking to my friend about this yesterday. This brings back painful memories of South Central being cancelled...

Rapper Eve will pop up next season with her sitcom “Opposite Sex,” but the Ruff Ryder isn’t a replacement for ‘Platinum,’ the rep stated.
Great.

I am a school counselor and a mother. However, I would not let my 7 year old son watch the show. I really enjoyed watching PLATINUM. It had that New York Undercover fill to it. I loved the music. I do not understand why anyone would make sure a fuss about the show. It is just TV. I do not like Buffy and I did not watch it. Everyone who does not enjoyed the show has the right to change the channel. I was looking foward to UPN on Tuesday night(DAMN).

This was a great show and it surprises me to know that it was cancelled. I had to do a search on Google to find this out. I am so pissed-off and furiated. I don't even like hip-hop music, but I loved the show for it's story and drama. It is a sort of "The Sopranos" in a hip-hop scene. Arghh!! This was good and now they put on "Top Models"? What a lame show!!

I thought platinum was a great show. to me it was real and maybe the realist show on t.v right about now. I think just because it was a black show it didnt last. thats the way it is and will always be unless they sell out to the white audience like damon wayans in my wife and kids, damn i loved platinum and it will be missed

im glad they took this show off the air...the dialogue was so phony...the charachters were contrived, and it did NOT really represent the industry..i can say that as a former intern at a major rap label...i know a middle -aged caucasian man wrote these scripts...none of it was believable...in particular the white rapper

You know what...
I am a black mand and I never even watched this show. Why are people shocked it got cancelled?
It didn't have a strong audience. The ratings dropped drastically every episode.
It was trash.
Don't be surprised.
