December 4, 2003Happy B-Day HovaSince this site's traffic has doubled in the last month, largely due to Jay-Z related traffic, the least I can do is wish the man a happy birthday. Congrats on the grammy nominations. Posted by jsmooth995 at December 4, 2003 12:22 PMComments
it's crazy...my traffic also doubled because of my one Jay-Z post that's ranked very high in Google. So yeah...happy Hova day. Posted by: Madison at December 4, 2003 3:04 PM My traffic also increased over the last month, but with no mention of Jay-Z whatsoever. I think y'all are overlooking a simple fact... our blogs are beginning to dominate search engine results. My traffic went from about 500-600 visitors in June to a current average of 1000-1300. And the only reason it has slowed over the last month is that I haven't been blogging as much. All of that increase started with the addition of my weblog, but a more significant increase was from getting links at other blogs (that's why I bugged you so much, Jay). But the traffic though our sites pales in comparison to my man Jan, who runs jahsonic.com in Antwerpen, Belgium. Jahsonic.com gets about 4,895 visitors per day. But check out his site and you will understand why this is so phenomenal. Jan has a lot of great content, but you'd never suspect it gets so much traffic. Considering how much work we bloggers do, I think a little coordination between us could, not only increase our traffic substantially, but we could build something much bigger than the sum of its parts. If y'all are interested, let's make it happen. Also, if you simply want to know how to get better rankings at search engines, send me an email. Posted by: eric at December 5, 2003 1:12 AM Eric, I also run a Google blog. If you're in to search engine optimization then we should talk. Click on my name to go there. I use my government name on that blog instead of "Madison" Posted by: Madison at December 5, 2003 11:42 AM where's the trade man on this thread? I thought by now he would have written a 9 paragraph birthday congrats to Jay-z. which reminds me i gotta go buy a fifth of Belvedere..... Posted by: pexdiggy at December 5, 2003 12:19 PM Eric - Well, I know where my traffic comes from cuz I watch my various trackers obsessively, but I agree with everything you are saying, for sure. I was actually planning to make a post about how when you search for "hip-hop blogs" now the first page is all bonafide members of our community, even before I learned that Madison and others evidently conspired for this to occur. It used to be only me and a few others, plus some weird stuff. We need some kind of cool "native tongues" "juice crew" type name for our hip-hop blog clique. Posted by: Jay Smooth at December 5, 2003 12:52 PM Jay... a good name would definitely put this thing over the top. How about Backpacker's Delight? Or The National Enquireezy. Or the Sourcerers? Most Extreme Dedication? The Sluice Crew? The Assimilated Tongues? Nah, those are terrible. I'll keep trying. Wow... Madison... I checked out your other blog. Nice! We should definitely come up with a list of tactics. I wish I had known about your Gooblogle. You'll probably see me there more than your hip hop blog! But yeah, let's do that. First things first, though... we need a central site. I'm not sure what y'all's hosting situations are, but I can host extra sites/domains at no additional cost. I'm going to look into different PHP scripts that could serve as the base for a central site. Maybe Movable Type can be adapted for the purpose. I was thinking we could model it after some of the big blog indexes, and have feeds, directories, and "most recents", and of course a search engine. In a lot of ways, we would be trying to compete directly with Google, by encouraging people to search through our central site, rather than going to Google every time. Also, if we all start to use our Movable Type categories, I think we can take it to a level of organization that will go beyond search engines. We could have categories like "Hip Hop & Movies" or "Hip Hop and Politics", or simply "Jay-Z" or "Benzino". Using categories definitely involves the most work -- not to mention the backlog of uncategorized entries -- but it would be a powerful organizing feature (and one that takes advantage of the code we already use. Anyway, I will get in touch with Hashim (aka Madison) and start researching the scripts if people are down for this. And also let's see if we can come up with a good name, preferably one that lends itself to an available domain name. Posted by: eric at December 5, 2003 5:53 PM How about "Da Hip-Hop Diarists"? Just a suggestion. Like this "meeting of the minds" thing that's going on here. Posted by: Trent at December 6, 2003 10:28 PM If people are down, I am happy to help coordinate and also provide whatever logistics are needed. We should definitely discuss this further. I have set up a page at my blog where we can role call and discuss this. http://www.stinkzone.com/cgi-bin/archives/000068.html Hope to see you there. Posted by: Eric at December 7, 2003 1:31 AM Count me in on any efforts at increased coordination but y'all know way more than me about hosting and other technical issues. I only just got put up on how to add images to my blog and have now gone picture crazy. (See.. Ian ... blog. LOL) Posted by: ian at December 8, 2003 4:50 PM Hi there, Just read your comments on traffic. I have only one advice for all of you. Link to eachother. And link to your own pages too. http://www.microcontentnews.com/resources/glossary/googlebomb.htm Oh yes, and keep me posted on gay rappers.
