February 22, 2004Note to Mel Gibson: Comment-Spam is Not ChristlikeA number of my friends in Livejournal have been bombarded with comment spam promoting Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" (which garnered rave reviews from Ebert and Roeper) Has anyone else seen this? Here's one of them, with the links removed: hey [username inserted here]. what's up? I think you suck, Kyle! Thanks for asking! It's pretty much identical everywhere I saw it, with minor variations on the intro. Is someone affiliated with the film paying people to go out astroturfing? I hope not, cuz that would be mad corny. I heard this morning on TV that they have already sold $10 million of prepaid tickets, mainly bought by churches and church groups. I'm sure it's one of those ill-advised groups, probably trying to get as many people as possible to go see the movie, hoping that it'll either strengthen their faith or convert them. Posted by: N56 at February 23, 2004 1:12 PM This was on the front cover of today's NY Post: "I Cried". - Audience member who saw the movie. I was laughiing when i saw that. Posted by: quimby at February 24, 2004 11:55 PM I have received one of these damn things. Gods, it is annoying. Posted by: Anjala at February 25, 2004 10:12 AM Same here... sad to say I actually got into it before discovering the truth. That damned kid. He's prolly some student who needs a collection of opinions for a school essay or something of that sort. Fneh. Posted by: Amused at February 25, 2004 11:12 AM i've done a bit of research, and the address that the "person" is sending from is actually located in Bangkok. this affirms the notion of a paid-for spamvertisement. Posted by: AngelKnight at February 25, 2004 2:15 PM Interestingly enough, I also got one, did a WHOIS on the IP address that LJ logged for me, and got Norway. I'm curious enough to send a note to the distributors and ask about it. Of course, I'm sure they'd deny it, but still. It's an interesting (and annoying) way to plug your film, I guess. Posted by: raanve at February 25, 2004 2:46 PM jay needs to update his MT or get a security plug-in. i know madison at diesel nation has comment security. Posted by: eric at February 25, 2004 4:34 PM mt-blacklist is on the case. Posted by: Jay Smooth at February 25, 2004 5:10 PM This spam is software-generated. It usually ads a little line about the entry's "current music" and "current mood". However they have neglected to update it and it keeps saying that the film is released in a week's time when in fact it has already opened... Posted by: Thermaland at February 26, 2004 5:06 AM Count me in. They got me, too. My wife has a theory that they did a Web search for "Lent," which I mentioned in passing. Posted by: Beau at February 26, 2004 9:01 PM that movies great Posted by: gfsasioiujhjnm at February 29, 2004 4:40 PM hey hiphopmusic, what's up? Posted by: Kyle at March 4, 2004 1:42 PM the comment above mine is more spam Posted by: Hashim aka Madison at May 6, 2004 7:51 PM Wow it's not only more spam, it's the exact same spam I had already quoted.. ha! I never noticed this was here.
