Another View on the Demise of Rawkus
There's been much discussion lately on the rise and fall of Rawkus Records, thanks to recent pieces in XXL and the Village Voice (which some found less than satisfying). So I dug up my 2001 interview with Mr. Walt and Evil Dee of the Beatminerz, where they gave an insider's take on what went wrong within the Rawkus empire. Suffice it to say they didn't mince words:

Jesus . . . I just went and looked at Rawkus's website. That shit is f*cking disturbing - The "Discography" section is pretty much exclusively Mos Def and Talib. It's almost like Stalin, the way they're meticulously erasing the past.
Actually, this is a long tradition with them - I remember one time picking up something from a used bin with the razor on it, but it looked strange - just a blue cover with some strange graphic of rocks on it. It didn't look like a hiphop album, and I'd never heard the name. So I checked it out, and sure enough, it was Nu Metal! I remember hearing that's how they started out, but good luck finding any indication of the fact - they probably burned all the records a month after they signed CoFlow.

That any indie label could survive a period of time -- and be successful -- in this day and age is really remarkable. There is a lock-down monopoly on the music industry. If you aren't a big player, take a nap and save yourself the trouble. And if you somehow make a little headway, the bigboys will be lining up to consume you. And if you resist, they'll do their best to sink you. You better have a strong stable of LOYAL artists if you go up against the big boys.
