Skillz Vs. Shaq

A month or two ago Shaquille O-Neal aimed a dis record at Virginia's underground stalwart Skillz (formerly Madd Skillz), sparking possibly the most peculiar beef in hip-hop history.

Skillz, after denying that he himself wrote Shaq's verse about him as part of a staged publicity stunt, came back at Shaq with a lukewarm response named "The Champ is Here," that began with a painfully stilted "guest appearance" by Ben Wallace, sounding an awful lot like Skillz took some Sportscenter clips and of Ben and pretended he was talking to him.

And now, according to hiphopsite, Skillz is about to put the Dis back into Obsessive Compulsive Disorder by aiming seven new tracks at Shaq on an upcoming mixtape.

To be honest, based on those first two tracks I think Shaq is actually winning this battle so far. But either way, something is seriously wrong if you need 7 tracks to beat anyone in a battle, much less Kazaam.

I still think this is all staged anyway, and will culminate in a three-way cage match between Shaq, Skillz and John Cena.

I'm a Laker fan but there is no way Shaq is better than Skillz. As far as his "lack of hits" goes, that is kind of sort of what being an UNDERGROUND emcee is about. The dude is simply nice on the mic. Making a hit album has so much more to do with label promotion and advertising than actual musical creativity. If I'm wrong, explain to me why Nelly sells more albums than Method Man? or Big L? or Redman? Is he better than anybody on that list? I think not. Album sales don't make an emcee. They just make some emcees rich.

I also want to know why Skiilz has not had one single hit, period -- forget about an album. Dude has been out for about 10 years now -- can anyone tell me what his most popular song is? I'm willing to bet that many more people know of the Shaq-B.I.G. collabo "You Can't Stop The Reign" than the name of a single Skillz song. That's pretty sad for a so-called underground champion such as Skillz. I equate an underground champion with the likes of MF Doom or Murs, not Skills. He's simply underground out of the virtue of never gaining any mainstream respect. He's always been a fake Big L, from Richmond no less. And now he's hanging on to the thread that he calls his career by battling none other than Shaq? If it wasn't before, it is now a wrap for Skillz and his career.

Skillz is a talented MC, anyone who knows about underground hip hop knows he is a heavy battle rapper and has made his name as a ghost-writer. he may not have personally gained "mainstream respect" but has penned hits for some of the biggest names in the game.

I agree that skillz is putting out way too much material dissing shaq but why shouldn't skillz use this to further his career, fair play to him, you gotta remember that skillz didn't start this shit. As for Shaq's rap career, it is based on guest spots from well known MC's/Producers and spitting Ghost written raps, he should really stick to the NBA.

My true opinion of Skillz, is that he is one of these underground dope emcees, that has nothing to talk about. If you've ever listened to early eminem material, canibus, an album by supernat (yes they exist). Eminem has since changed to a more content driven style, the point however is many times these skills on top of skills guys need beef to be dope. If they don't have it, they have nothing to talk about. Canibus I feel is the epitemy of this type of emcee, the guy put out 5 or 6 albums, and you strain to listen through their entirety and try to find something truly profound. Each song is an attempt to prove how tight they really are, as if the last track didn't let you know, and the track following isn't getting ready to tell you. Canibus spits 100 bar rhymes, and songs with hooks about how dope he is, take time to listen to his albums and others similar to him, and take time to realize that they can only take enough time to break from self-promotion, to dis someone they have some sort of "beef" with, only to get right back to the self-promotion. This is why these guys, skillz included, are very uninteresting to me, and the reason why I consider to barely be a low representation of what Hiphop is. Stuff that into your head. Inculcation.

i dunno what some of u are talking about...skillz is one of the sickest mc's out there, he just keeps his shit on the low...and he can write hits, look around and find his live version of ghostwriter on "The Roots - Live in San-Francisco, CA (02.03.03)" bootleg....or even listen to some of his freestyles like the "in da club freestyle" on Hot 97...

i think the point he was trying to make by releasing so many tracks was to not mess with him...and if u listen to the mixtape they're on, they're not nescessarily directed at shaq...he even threw on his latest single...and Shaq probably didn't even write that dis anyways...

Infinite sez it best...all because you sell albums doesn't mean your good....it means people are willing the pay the money to promote you enough so more mainstream listeners get accustomed to you and buy your albums...

I think the reason Skillz hasn't been able to get decent distribution cause he's got too many enemies...when you dis that many people, that well, no one wants to support you and get blacklisted....

Alright im not sure what kind of crack the writer of this article was on, because Skillz rebuttles are light years from lukewarm. Dissect shaq's rhymes, which barely deserve listening, then listen to the "champ is here".
