Jimmy Smith, 1925-2005

The unsurpassed master of his instrument. Which happened to be possibly the funkiest instrument in the world. So this is quite a loss.

Jazz pioneer Jimmy Smith dies

The world has lost one of its greatest musical innovators. Widely considered “the world’s greatest jazz organist,” Jimmy Smith died Tues, Feb. 8 of natural causes in his Phoenix home. He was 76.

Although Smith wasn’t the first to play jazz on the Hammond B3 organ, his virtuosity over the instrument combined with his brilliant infusion of gospel, blues and R&B riffs and melodies into bebop-inspired improvisations place him alongside other jazz pioneers, such as Charlie Parker, Art Tatum and John Coltrane – artists who revolutionized the way their respective instruments were played and who are continuing to have a profound influence of other instrumentalists...

Chances are you'll get a hefty dose of his music on our radio show this Saturday.

Truly gutted, the man was one of the true greats. I will never forget his fantastic gig at the Jazz Cafe, London in 2003 and am very sad not to get the chance to witness his live playing again. RIP.

I SAT 8 FEET FROM MR JIMMY AT HIS LAST CONCERT -
AT THE JASMINE'S JAZZ SUPPER CLUB IN MYRTLE BEACH
SOUTH CAROLINA ON NOVEMBER 28. HE WAS HOT AS EVER
EVEN WITH A MALFUNCTIONING LESLIE. HE WAS SASSY
AND SAME AS HE EVER WAS! MARK WHITFIELD WAS WITH
HIM THAT NIGHT AND SO FULL OF HIS TALENT. I HEARD
JIMMY'S LAST SHOW WITH LUKE MOSS SITTING WITH ME - THE FIRST B3 PLAYER WITH THE ALLMAN BROS. IT WAS A FAT AND MEMORABLE SHOW. WHEN HE WAS HELPED FROM THE STAGE, I SHOOK HIS HAND AND SPOKE WITH HIM. HIS DEMEANOR WAS THAT OF A MAN IN LOVE WITH HIS WORK, IN TOUCH WITH HIS LEGACY AND HIS MORTALITY. HE HAD TO KNOW HE WAS CLOSE TO GOING HOME - BUT HE WAS THERE, IN HIS GLORY, FOR ALL WHO LOVED HIM. LIKE I TOLD HIM THAT NIGHT -"THANK YOU FOR COMING, MR JIMMY. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS." THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER
LIKE YOU1

Thank you Jimmy Smith for giving me so much pleasure over the last 35 years. I am so glad that I attended your last UK Concert in 2004 and shook your hand. There will never be another like you. I am truly saddened. God bless you and RIP.

Rest in peace Jimmy. I have your CD box set as a regular on my car's player. Just getting into B3 playing, you are a wonderful inspiration. I deeply regret that I never will have the opportunity to see you live. I guess that just makes your legend greater in my eyes. One question: do they truly have leslie's in Heaven? I'll listen for you when I pass over.

I have been a Jimmy Smith fan since the early 1960's, and have had the pleasure of seeing him perform over a dozen times in Buffalo,New York, Philadelphia and New York City. He had a style and a feeling that no one could duplicate.

One can argue over who may have been the best jazz tenor saxophonist, alto saxophonist, bassist, drummer or guitarist. But when asked who is/was the best jazz organist, Jimmy Smith had no peers!

I will greatly miss both his incredible organ mastery and his cantankerous personality. The jazz world has lost a true giant!!

I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.
