Lyn Collins, 1948-2005

Farewell to Mama Feelgood:

Lyn Collins, singer and James Brown Revue member, dead at 56

Lyn Collins, whose funky vocals landed her a spot early in James Brown's stage show and the nickname "Female Preacher," has died. She was 56...

...Born in Dime Box, Texas, Collins took up singing as a teenager. At 14, she married a man who worked as the local promoter for the James Brown Revue. Brown heard Collins sing and in 1970 she was invited to join his traveling show.

Her powerful voice led Brown to nickname her the "Female Preacher," and two years later, she cut her first solo album, "Think (About It)." In 1975, Collins released "Check Me Out If You Don't Know Me By Now."

Over the years, Collins' songs have also appeared in various compilations, but it was hip-hop duo Rob Base & D.J. E-Z Rock who exposed Collins' work to a new generation when they sampled one of her songs for their 1988 hit "It Takes Two." "She was surprised and elated by how it took off," Jackson recalled. "It really kind of spurred her. It really let younger artists know who she was."

My mom loves that song. Sorta funny when I first heard the Rob Base song I thought it was the most fantastic thing I've ever heard at the time. I was standing at the Bx 55 bus stop in front of Yankee Stadium. I car comes up blasting that joint. I was stunned when I heard the Lyn Collins lyrics. It was familiar but I didn't immediately make the connection.

Last week, Jadakiss released the mixtape song "Checkmate," in response to 50 Cent's diss song "Piggy Bank," and now Jadakiss is calling the G-Unit rapper out for a $1 million pay-per-view battle.

Jadakiss told Washington, D.C.-based magazine Tha. Ave., "O.K., here we go. I challenge 50 right here. You're getting it first. I challenge 50 for a million dollars cash on Pay-Per-View in [Las] Vegas. The judges can be Jay-Z, [Dr.] Dre. Whoever he wants can be the judges. A million dollars cash on Pay-Per-View in Vegas. Anywhere, we can do it in Nigeria if he wants to. A million dollars cash on Pay-Per-View."

Jadakiss' official response to 50 Cent, "Shots Fired," will be included on his partner Styles' next album, Time Is Money, which comes out in May

When I first heard about Lyn Collins' passing today (Sunday, March 20th) it just knocked me out of my chair! I couldn't believe what I was reading. Of all James Brown's female proteges and singers, Lyn was the most successful. Her classic 1972 release "Think (About It)" has been sampled by countless rappers over the past few years, and her legacy will live on. She will be greatly missed. I fell in love with "Think" when I first heard it back when I was in high school...a friend named Lee had it on tape.

I hope that now maybe Polygram will reissue the REAL second album of hers called "This New Feeling"...which I saw years ago in an out-of-town record store. It should have been titled "Lyn Collins' Greatest Hits And More" because it had all of her hits plus a few B-sides! Maybe if the public knew more about it, the heads at Polydor/Polygram will reissue it. It apparenly was withdrawn in favor of her "official" release called "Check Me Out If You Don't Know Me By Now."

What about it, Polygram?

The world just lost one of it's Greatest soulfull singers.. If It wasn't for My love for James Brown's music and Rob Base and DJ E-Z Roc's remake of "Think about it" I would have never known about her. I will go out and purchase the rest of her songs. Her voice still sends chills through me.. I really wish that I could have gotten the chance to meet her.She and her Family are in my prayers.
