Revenge of the Sith Review

Okay, the hype was a little overrated. But only a little.

Not better than the OG Star Wars. But way better than Phantom and Clones. As promised, this chapter is dark and lovely. A sumptuous feast of death and dismemberment.

Ian Mcdarmid steals the show, as advertised. And I never thought I'd be saying this but Hayden Christiansen actually stepped his game up. Outside of the scenes with Natalie which were brief but painful as ever, he was quite tolerable as Anakin this time.

Everyone else, uhh, does their best with the lines and guidance they are given. As always with Master Lucas the dialogue is brutally (often hilariously) clunky, and the only good performances from his actors seem to come despite his work directing them.

The weaknesses of Master Lucas are as obvious here as they were in the other 2, the other 5, really. All these flaws were there in the old ones too (go back and peep young Luke whining about his "power converterrrrrs"), but back then the flaws were outshined by his strengths.. and after Master Lucas' dark side overpowered him in the last two, his strengths finally won out again this time.

George has never been adept at manipulating the little pieces of storytelling, writing lines of dialogue and such.. but when it comes to working with the big pieces, molding the basic elements of a story into a structure that holds together and resonates, he's never lost his touch. Or maybe he did lose his touch and we're just lucky he wrote this whole story back in the 70s. Either way it all works out in the end.

That mastery of mythmaking combined with his gift for visual splendor has allowed him to create a mythology with truly lasting power.. The Matrix seemed to promise this before ultimately betraying us, and Lucas flirted with the same disaster but I think he's pulled it together in the end.

Just as parts 4-6 must now be viewed as the story of Anakin's redemption, for me the end of this trilogy brings the redemption of Jedi Master Lucas. Balance has been restored at last.

Gona Peep it tonight I'll look for the line. People complain a lot about the first two movies not being dark enough... but they misunderstand that the original episodes were about the worst of times... the darkest of times. It wasn't always dark, but those times are now coming. This movie tells the story of how those times come to be and of Darth Vaders Fall from grace, the fall to the darkside. The Darkness is coming... pure darkness.

Good review but I am of the belief that Lucas didn't write all of this out in the '70's. I think he had a back story for the first "Star Wars" and that's it. When people say "Yeah but the first one is titled Episode IV" I say "Yeah, well, Lucas admits he was into Flash Gordon as a kid, and that was a serial, and you didn't have to see the episode before to know what was going down."

Thanks for the review...I was going back and forth debating if I should see the movie or not. I guess I will check it out to add closure to the whole saga.
Had to disagree with you on the matrix movies. Those movies had an open interpretation about it, which I never saw before on the visual screen. It made me think, something which movies fail to do. Guess the purpose is to entertain.

Hi.
Saw EP 3.
Indeed it was soperior to EP1 and the crappy EP2.
Even though I always thought the N-sync Haden kid was a TERRIBLE choice for Anakin, he does deliver a better performance than his previous installment.
The story was well told and made sense, however I was surprised how easily he fell to the Dark side. Nowhere is it questioned that even though "there was good in him" he went on to do terrible deeds without blinking an eye and hurt the ones he loved most. I felt a deeper, more troublesome voyage to the darkside was needed.
In the end though, it pieces the new episodes with the old quite nicely and Lucas did regain his trademark story telling of the earlier movies.

ROTS was far more impressive than the previous prequels. The opening Jedi dogfight sequences thrusts you into a galaxy far far away all over again. R2D2 gets gully this time on the droids and Christensen pays his dues for the franchise finally. Clones was a nicely paced story with great action/CGI tricknology, but the dumbed-down dialogue practically ruined it. III has some spotty moments with that too. Jay, I agree with what you said about Lucas being a great storyteller and artist, he does have a difficult time conveying the natural human love experience. When Portman cries, "You're breaking my heart," it seems mad forced. The latest installment works best on the intrigue factor for the old guard who were waiting to see the battle between Obi and Anakin. Lucas did not disappoint. He stepped his game up because he employed a narrative from the SW novels. He did also drop the ball with one major detail; WARNING SPOILER:

Padme dies in labor at the end. The original trilogy featured Princess Leia reminiscing about her mother, that she was so beautiful. The context of this statement doesn't preserve the continuity because she was adopted. However, he did preserve the continuity of Vader, did you peep the green button console on the suit?

Saw this movie last night......it's overall good and definitely better than the first two, but in some parts it just isn't convincing. I think Anakin turns to the dark side too easily, Padme dies too easily and the subplot explaining the disappearing Jedi / Force ghosts of the original trilogy is just tacked on as an afterthought. Also, how come Anakin can kill Dooku with relative ease but he can't beat Obi-Wan? Basically I think there were too many loose ends to be tied up and Lucas just had too much stuff to squeeze into one movie. Having said all that, overall I enjoyed it. The space battle scenes were awesome and the lightsabre action was too. Overall it's the best star wars movie since the originals and well worth watching even though it's far from perfect.

star wars is deeper than a lot of people realise,lucas originally penned 9,3 to come after r.o.t jedi,this was heavily publicised in the early 1980's,but since then he has been banging on about only having the six episodes down on paper,do anymore hardcore fans remember the missing 3 episodes?,timothy zahn ran with the "what happened after r.o.t.jedi"strand in his excellent triolgy of books featuring all the 70's characters and some new enemies,it's just a shame old ewok face lucas(i mean that respectfully of course!)could'nt finish the job he set out to do,although the latest film does seem to put it all to bed nicely!
