Taking the "Versus" Out of "Rap vs. Hip-Hop"

I define rap as a spoken tradition: singers can rap in their songs; players have a 'rap' for the ladies; beatniks and Bob Dylan can rap. To me, rap is not mutually exclusive to hip-hop.

Hip-hop is the culture of the streets from where breakdancing, MC-ing and DJ-ing come from. When rap is applied to hip-hop, it is vastly different from the examples I listed above.

To me, hip-hop is everything from Tone Loc to Dilated Peoples; from Hammer to Wu-Tang Clan; from 2 Live Crew to KRS-ONE... ALL of it is hip-hop, no matter what your tastes are.
