October 27, 2005AUDIO: Rosa Parks Memorial MashupSly's "Thank You.." mixed with Outkast's "Rosa Parks" mixed with The Neville Brothers "Sister Rosa" mixed with 1956 Rosa Parks interview from the Pacifica Radio Archives. (with additional cameos by Dick Gephardt, Kwame Kilpatrick, John Lewis and Amy Goodman) Posted by jsmooth995 at October 27, 2005 7:22 AMComments
This sounds pretty good, but I think that Rosa Parks had a beef with the song "Rosa Parks" by Outkast and she was suing them for it. Just because the person and the song share the same title, doesn't mean they go hand in hand, knowwhatimsayin? Since she opposed her name being the title of the song, I feel like it's disrespectful to pay a tribute to her with the song playing in the background to her voice. Posted by: Jason at October 27, 2005 9:28 PM I don't really view the tribute as being disrespectful. I've read several articles about the litigation against Outkast, and it seems as though Rosa's decision to sue was greatly influenced by her family. They probably had the money on their minds more than anything else. I don't think that Outkast intended any harm. Posted by: Scholar at October 27, 2005 10:14 PM i'm pretty sure that outkast were trying to honour rosa parks with the song as much as the neville brothers were and did not mean to cause any harm. this mash-up is a lot less subtle than outkast's song, but honours her in the same way. nicely done. Posted by: Del at October 27, 2005 11:08 PM Jason: Actually it came out that the whole lawsuit thing wasn't really Rosa's idea, that came from other people who were controlling her estate, and who were accused by many of misusing it. Posted by: Jay Smooth at October 28, 2005 2:48 AM This is nice. I went searching for a copy of "Sister Rosa" and found this instead. I have just added it to the rotation of my pirate radio station. Hopefully it will pop up a few times before I go off the air on Nov. 6. I am teaching my 4th & 5th Grade students about this great black american heroine. Any and all resources are helpful especially this upbeat musical history lesson. Posted by: Adrienne Mitchell at November 15, 2005 6:52 AM Wow. I really appreciate that you uplaoding this. Me and my partner are doing our 11th grade end of the year project on Ms. Rosa Parks and we needed an audio. At first we were GOING to have to do ALOT of editing on the Outkast- Rosa parks song and its not hard to understand why. But this song is perfect and suitable for our audience. Thanks so much. The song itself is good. Posted by: Natsuko at May 2, 2006 9:32 PM |
