October 10, 2005Damn Blasted LiyahDoes anyone still actually celebrate this holiday? Might as well have a Ted Bundy day.. But if you need a better reason to party, you can tune into WBAI tonite at 11PM to hear Toubab Krewe performing live in studio.. Also check out our DJs Avee and 3D at APT tonight if you're in the area. Posted by jsmooth995 at October 10, 2005 6:51 PMComments
That's a great link. The only good thing about this holiday was that it made my commute much easier today. Posted by: Rachel S at October 10, 2005 7:20 PM Well in some parts of the world it is refered to as Día de la Raza or Day of the Race . So yeah I guess some people do. I don't see whats so bad about it. If it wasn't for the coming of the Spanish Mexico wouldn't exsit and neither would I or my family. So I guess its all how you look at it. Here are some links to the subject. Sorry I have no Html skills. http://www.go2mexico.com/?page=mexico_articles/day_of_the_race.php Posted by: Manuel at October 10, 2005 7:51 PM Manuel: If it wasn't for the transatlantic slave trade, African American culture as we know it would not exist and neither would I or my family. Does that means I shouldn't see slavery as such a bad thing? Posted by: Jay Smooth at October 10, 2005 9:44 PM With out starting a argument, sometimes you have to look at the positives. But as I say I think its just how you look at it. I celebrate it cause well shit, had it not been for it once again I would not be here. So you can look at all the negativty of it or you can look at all the great things that came from it. I am not trying to justify all the tragedy but its still the start of my culture. If you feel like frowning upon it then do so. To me its like people that drive and then tell me how evil Exxon is. If you really feel that strongly about Columbus Day and everything that it spawned you can go back to not speaking English or Spanish. And quit doing all the routines of the white man. Go back to your native land and live like people did before the evil Europeans came over and stole your religon, your language. Posted by: Manuel at October 11, 2005 12:15 AM I don't think the Columbus day debate runs quite that deep, Manuel. Its more the belief that Chris Columbus, although he stumbled upon an unknown continent, really has committed too many atrocities to have a day in his honor. At least this is my impression Posted by: StussyD at October 11, 2005 2:06 AM Right, I totally agree that there should be space to celebrate Latin-American cultures as they have developed since then... I just don't think focusing on Columbus is the best way to go about it, in fact it's pretty much the worst way possible.. like there's nothing wrong with having a Black History Month, but if you named it "Hooray for the Middle Passage Month" or something, it uhhh wouldn't have quite the same feel to it..
