January 12, 2006Cool C Given Date for ExecutionThe warrant is signed for him to die by lethal injection (on the same day Biggie passed): Rapper Cool C's Execution Warrant Signed by PA Governor Ed RendellPosted by jsmooth995 at January 12, 2006 12:33 PM Comments
This is a shame. I remember him from back in the '80s and liked his music. It's so sad that his life went this way. I feel like it doesn't get much publicity though, which is interesting seeing as how he is the first rapper (to my knowledge)to be executed. Posted by: Jessica at January 13, 2006 1:53 PM Considering all the "rap's real Death Row" headline puns available, and the media's eagerness to highlight hip-hop artists' run-ins with the law, I'm surprised this didn't get more coverage. Posted by: Joe Grossberg at January 13, 2006 2:31 PM Yeah I may just be out of touch, with my tv-lessness, but it seems to have gone unnoticed so far. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 13, 2006 5:41 PM WOW! To all you wanna be hip hop artist, this is the road that your life can take. I remember Steady B & Cool C. SO what I'm saying to all of you up and coming artist, you really don't make the money in the business that you think. After all Tupac couldn't even afford one million dollar bail> Posted by: bigmoose at January 15, 2006 7:34 PM This is sad as hell. A rap icon of the 80's .... set to die for a stupid robbery. Why do they have to uphold this "gangsta" image? Why is everything so hardcore? Just thinkin' back when Cool C. , Steady B. & 3 Times Dope were runnin' circles around other groups.... and now .... they wait to see their friend go out like this. Like I said... this is sad as hell. DROP THE IMAGE & CLEAN IT UP PEOPLE. Posted by: SlimILL at January 16, 2006 3:29 PM Thoughts and prayers go out to Cool C's fam. I remember when Cool C and Steady B were on top of the rap game, bout how 50 is now... The ironic thing about it all is that Cool C is scheduled to die on the same day as Biggie.... "Greatest rapper of all time died on March 9...." Posted by: ERR at January 16, 2006 10:49 PM I wrote Cool C a letter a couple of months ago, and he wrote back. He says he is "fighting for [his] life" right now...but he was so kind in his letter he seemed at peace in a way... But he definitely wants to live and is still a hardcore head! And I know he would take back what he did if he could. I don't agree with the death penalty as it doesn't work as a crime deterrant (sp?) and the numbers of blacks/browns murdered by the gov. in comparison to whites is staggering. Anyway I'm writing him back tonight and I'll be posting whatever other info I have as I get it on my blog. I'd be down to put a "Free Cool C" banner on my blog if somebody was inclined to make one - I have NO graphic skills... I know we prolly can't free him, but we could raise a little awareness for the next coupla months about his case, his music (which is great!), the death penalty, etc... Always in peace...cherryl Posted by: Cherryl Aldave at January 17, 2006 4:33 AM I wish Cool C could get a chance to speak about the decision he made to rob the bank. Was it the need to live the rich life he rapped about? Someone should take the time to tell Cool C's story, because it may hit home with a lot of young men. I met Cool C when his record was on top and he was with a very attractive girl. He was dressed in a very nice sweat suit(showing my age), with a very nice truck. All the things that young men these days want. A lot of young men pay to big a price for the above listed things. Just remember that you may not pay now for your quick decisions to make fast money, but at some point you have to pay. Just make sure it's worth it, because I'm sure Cool C would take back all those things just to live the rest of his life in jail. Posted by: Mr. Bigstuff at January 17, 2006 11:12 AM I was a fan of cool c But everyone is saying how sad they are for him what is wrong with you people what about the officer who lost her life she had to sons,If this was your mother you would not think twice you would say fry his butt,so don't be selfish,I know he did not mean to kill her he panicked becuase she came to the bank door but the fact still remains she lost her life and for what becuase someone had an image to uphold. My prayers go out to the Family of Officer Vaird,be strong. No matter what every dog has there day and cool c is living proof. And to cool C I can't give a long speech becuase th damage is already done but the best thing he can do is repent.God Bless people and be smart black on black crime is a no no.put the guns down. Posted by: kim at January 17, 2006 1:42 PM yes i agree with that kim. more folks should also talk about the life of Officer Vaird. i dunno if i would want him fried if it was my mom tho...i think life in an American gulag is a fate worse than death... peace... Posted by: Cherryl Aldave at January 18, 2006 3:47 AM I must have been living under a rock lately, but I just learned of this entire situation last week. When I heard it on Hot 97, I was like "Nah" they couldn't have just said Cool C! Then I heard it again and I think that my heart skipped a beat. I instantly flashed back and replayed "The Glamorous Life" in my head. This cat was on-top, and now at such a young age, dude has hit rock-bottom. I agree that he has to pay the price for his crime, but execution is not a fit form of justice! The government is bogus! -One Posted by: SharpestOne at January 18, 2006 1:46 PM West Philly stand up! Its a tragic culmination for Officer Vaird, Cool C, Steady B, Hip-Hop music and the entire City of Philly. Its so many murders here everyday--its ridicous you hear me. Cool C is paying the price for the demons of alot of other people too believe that. But its crazy--you can't go around banging cops and getting caught man--this whole situation saddens me. If he gotta go--Make it March 10th or March 8th or something too-its too ironic and there is no humor to found in it. We haven't even found Biggies killer yet--and we are executing the first real Jiggy rapper on his death day. If I didnt know better it would come off as scripted. All I know is thats fucked up Cool C. Get right with God man. Say what you have to say to whoever you have to say it. You were a great emcee and made us in West Philly proud (if thats any consellation) Our prayers go out to Officer Vairid too and her family in West Oaklane GETBACKATME Posted by: Broady Boy ACE at January 18, 2006 2:07 PM Cool C music was even felt by people as far away as Australia.Governments murdering anyone should never be condone no matter what!Police no the risks taking such a job,eye for eye is wack. Just let him tell his story to prevent others going the same way.Hes more use alive than wasted by a dated system! peace Posted by: Flak at January 19, 2006 6:37 AM I just want to say I grew up with Cool C my girlfriend used to mess with him. I feel bad for both parties. The cop's family because I know its hard to lose a loved one especially the way she died. And Cool C because in his heart I know he wouldn't set out to kill someone. All the facts haven't veen told. Cool C is really a sweet person that was misunderstood. Shit happens, and we regret the choices that we make. I just wish there was a way where he could still live and be punished, like theyr'e doing with Steady B. My prayers go out to Cool C and the officer's family. If you read this Cool this is Happy one of the twins (Happy and Hope) Posted by: lex at January 21, 2006 1:05 PM May God have mercy on your soul Cool C. And may God give the Vaird family the strength to carry on. Steady B grew up next door to me on Redfield st in West Philly. It was a tragic day when this occured. They were my young boys. Its days like this that makes you wonder if me being an Old Head could i had said something or anything. It hurts me to my core,to see young BLACK MEN going out like this. You will be the first rapper to be executed. The whole world should know about this. You are the Old head now. There are an abundance of young boys out there that needs to hear from you. Your story need to be told. Cool C will be the first person executed in Pa this year. I live in San Fran Ca now, in Hunterspoint Bayview area. Last year there was 91 homicides and only 16 were solved. 90% black on black crime. We need help from eveyone. But we must first help ourselves. Look within yourself, and say am i doing all i can do? How can we help you now C? Do you want us to protest outside of Greene, like we did for Tookie at Quentin? I am at a lost for words. May God bless you and yours. To the Vaird family. I to have a cousin shes on the Philly police force and i pray for her everyday. whenever i hear about a female officer getting shot or worse. I think of Miss Vaird, and i feel. May God bless you and yours also. While he regrets having anything to do with the robbery, he maintains that he is innocent of the shooting. in some articles i've read on his case, they say stuff like "prosecutors fingered roney" as the triggerman, etc. i am still looking for actual testimony of him being the shooter...wonder what word is on the street in philly about his innocence or lack of...i'll report more soon as i get another letter from him... Posted by: Cherryl Aldave at January 22, 2006 11:41 PM Well what can i say it's a god damn shame. I have been a electro/hip hop fan/collector since 1982 and for me when Steady B's album hit the streets i went out and grabbed a copy straight away and still in pristine condition. Although Cool C was not that popular in england i loved his single juice crew dis, great production, good rhymes but i love all hip hop artists no matter where they come from and i am not into disrespecting, i love the music and lyrics. Why did they do this? What for? If you commit a crime and get caught you got to do the time. Lots of love and respect to their close friends and families. Posted by: Gurpreet Sehmbi at January 24, 2006 10:07 AM i dont know if anybody already mentioned this, but his partner steady b and their manager are the ones who testified against cool c saying that he's the one who shot her, because they were the other two involved in the robbery, who knows though Posted by: greg at January 26, 2006 4:52 AM " I GOT A HABIT " Posted by: Tide Brown at January 26, 2006 3:01 PM 1st things 1st I'd like to wish peace upon the Family of officer Vaird who lost her life in the line of duty. May she rest in peace and may her family find compfort in God's promise. Posted by: BIG SHIZZ at January 26, 2006 9:40 PM I would also like to say to those who are clueless to the holes that are riddled throughout this case.....DON'T BE SOOOO FAST TO RUSH TO JUDGEMENT. This case is a rush to judgement--- we have somebody so seal it type a thing. Then with it being High Profile envolving a female Police Officer being killed on duty (rest her soul) there's even more need for closure. The key testimonies given that sealed the case are of that of 2 individuals that were not even present in the assumed area that the crime took place. 1 was supposedly in the back gettin paid while the other was in the gettyupmobile! the so called video was not clear enough to I.D. the shooter neither did any of the people in the bank I.D. The supposed killer. So Be careful when you read newspapers--they are written to sell "NEWS"...just like His-story books are written to sell "VIEWS". But WHO's Views??If you beleive whole heartedly that Christopher Columbus "A KNOWN MURDERER" of Native Americans, discovered America than you'll also beleive without a doubt that my friend Christopher Roney deserves to be put to rest via lethal injection on March 9th 2006. With his life's end looming in the balance of time. After 10years since this tragedy took place my Dear Friend whom I will never deny or turn my back on has consistantly maintained his innocents reguarding Officer Vairds death. And I beleive him. Should time produce proof to reveal differently upon my choice to beleive him. He will remain my friend and I will choose to LOVE the sinner and HATE the sin. Yet you must ask yourself on 1 of the upcomming Christopher Columbus Days in the Midst of the Sales and Parades after my dear friend has been laid to rest, Did the American Judicial system REALLY put the TRUTH to it's ultimate Test??? Think Deeply upon what I've said before we find another Black Brother Dead. Crazy Love 4U Yan Stay Strong!! Posted by: BIG SHIZZ at January 26, 2006 10:22 PM I'm currently researching an article about Cool C - one of the MC's I grew up listening to - and whilst I'm against the death penalty in all cases, I'm afraid Big Shizz is a little off on his evidence. Several witnesses, a police officer, an employee of the bank, an employee across the street, and another witness provided evidence that all point clearly to C being the man who shot Vaird. The shorter man (Canty) was placed by witnesses at the rear of the bank (and left his weapon at the scene) and Steady B was the driver. The significantly taller man was placed at the entrance to the bank and as the one who discharged his gun - the path of the bullet showed that it was fired by a tall man - C is obviously much taller than Canty or Steady B. Furthermore, it was the silver gun that was wielded by the taller man that was found by ballistics evidence to have been discharged at the scene. I wish he hadn't done it, but it does appear that he did Posted by: Drewhuge at January 27, 2006 5:35 PM keep digging drew...big shizz is right about the case being holey...and i've dealt with enough prison type situations...to my own incarceration under the "laws" of this country...so i know personally that everything you read about a case is not to be believed... Vaird and bless her kids. When you play you pay! Whether or not the facts of this case are wrong or right, the bottom line is Chris Roney(Cool C)...Warren McGlone(Steady B)... and Canty were robbing a bank and because of this an Officer Vaird's life was taken from her. A few years before they were living the glamourous life, because they let that hype go to their heads an officer is dead. If McGlone and Canty were real soldiers, they should have stepped up to the plate. Instead they pointed the finger. CEB for life right. Because of stupidity 4 lives are taken though 2 of them will get to see/smell/hear/think/talk/walk although behind bars. I know those central and western Pa. hillbillies are havin fun with them. 1 died,2 will ride, and the other will fry (lethal injection) God Bless em' all...Biggie was ready to die....I hope Cool C is too!!!!! The third suspect, Ernest Mark Canty, is scheduled for release in 2009. I wonder if this is the same Canty. His name and age is a match to what's in the system. Posted by: Darrick at February 6, 2006 1:39 PM I think a lot of rapper's cases may get botched because people are so hung up on being called a snitch. Testifying what you saw is being a "snitch"? Look at the murder of Busta Rhyme's bodyguard. No cooperation. Nobody got nothing to say. Then people complain that the police is not doing their job. No wonder Tupac, Biggie and Jam Master Jay's killers aren't caught. If your mother, sister or child (god forbid) got caught in something tragic, telling the police what happened would make you a "snitch"? I don't get it. Posted by: Erika at February 10, 2006 5:56 PM Wow I just recieved word of this set excution date today 2/10/06 from an old overbrook high school classmate. You see we all graduated from the brook in 1997. I remember it was like yesterday but so long ago. Me, boob (Steady B)and Chris (Cool C)and a couple of other cats we were at graduating from brook at this center downtown I believe it was the merriam theatre but I could be wrong anyway we all sat on the top row clowning around like jubilated fools and like it was the last time we were gonna actually see a high school classroom again. Little did i know that these silly, wacky and very popular rap stars would be found guilty in a murder of the first female police officer in the line of duty in philly. This is blowing my mind that cool is actually gonna be the first rapper to die by lethal injection. I love him as a muslim brother and May Allah forgive him of any wrong doing. But I agree with a couple of the writers before me that his story should be told cause I mean cool was a cat that in Beeber Jr. High we had sewing class for about two periods straight and I remember when we were competing who could make the best sweatpants but even though his sweat pants looked like a pair of Gordon Gartrells he was a young dude that was in sewing class and this was a class that we had to pick as our elective class. Now he is about to die on some ole crazy and horrible murder rap. I personally know all the guys that were on the case it was so many of them we all went to overbrook and I was real close to warren stewart aka steady B I looked up to him cause he had made it even with will smith a year older than us at brook these were guys who were paving the way for us. Giving us hope back then that we could make it in the business. But as I found religion and became stronger in my islam I too knew that cool and steady were muslims also but our paths were in going in different directions I would see them here and there in streets you know then I would here things but I was like no this guys are making it off of the money they made in the business. But i'll never forget when I was at the barber shop (Nubian Phades on 61st and landsdowne and the news came on and they said they just caught steady B and they were wanted for the possible murder of Mrs.Vaird. Now life is forever changed. I moved from Ny to Philly and felt that Philly was more of a hold your own/struggle to live type deal. As for Cool C, may peace be upon him. One can only hope that he has made his spiritual connection with GOD. I cant imagine how it must feel to know your time is up, especially if you havent let GOD back in your heart. Our youth see this rap game as a way out of the ghetto. Well I should say poverty, because not being Ghetto will not sell you records. My point is it was harder back then to get paid in this devilish industry we call HipHop. Like Common said, "I used to Love her". Cool C and others from the oldschool paid the price and made the sacrifices for todays rappers to smarten up and keep what they "earned". If Cool would of seen the money he deserved for his work maybe just maybe things would be different. I make no excuses for his actions. Poverty is a plague, but not an excuse for taking life. That includes the governments part in Cool C's soon to be death. May God be with you Cool C. BOTH COOL C AND STEADY B should have another chance at life. They learned an important lesson and would be released with new wisdom but unfortunately the american criminal justice system isnt about rehabilitation when it comes to BLACKS but persecution and eternal condemnation. People handle poverty and suffering differently, so dont climb onto an egotistical "high horse" when looking at the actions of these brothers. Posted by: Stacey....old skool fo life at March 13, 2006 9:36 PM I was a big Hilltop hustlers fan way back when, especially Cool C and 3X Dope. That reoccuring character Michelle that was in all the songs makes me laugh now just thinking about it. I remember when the news broke way back when about the robbery and shooting. I was always under the impression that Steady B had ratted Cool out. Is that not true? Posted by: Bill at March 19, 2006 2:58 PM is cool c dead or alive. Posted by: MAGDOE at March 24, 2006 5:01 PM i gotta habbit its like a disease , and everybody remembers how that song came on with that banging ass bass, doom doom ohhhh doom doom oh, man that was the shiznit back in philly hilltop hustlers west philly for sure, glamourous life. that i gotta habit is a philly hip hop classic album... one. gotta habit like the people on the pipe. lol. but remember this too that was someones wife mother daughter etc that they killed out of fear and thats not right. hip hop classic but immature stupidity of hip hops wannabe lifestyles. think my people think Posted by: charlie spit at March 25, 2006 3:36 PM "The ironic thing about it all is that Cool C is scheduled to die on the same day as Biggie.... "Greatest rapper of all time died on March 9...."
Posted by: Guy Who Was There at March 27, 2006 12:45 PM I can't believe Cool C being on death row is supposed to be considered "news". Nobody cares about COOL C! Who listens to his music? Who's even heard of him? This is the first and only time I've ever heard of him. I hope that bastard does get executed for killing that cop. He's a murderer first, and a rap star after that. They shouldn't spare this killer's life just because he cut a couple of rap records. Posted by: R at March 27, 2006 12:51 PM Mabye Cool C - and everyone here who thinks the death sentence is bogus or some kind of gov't conspiracy - should pick up the same bible you thump on in church every Sunday (if you go) & procceed to Exodus, Chapter 21, verses 12 through 13. 'Nuff said. Posted by: DJ Green Arrow at March 29, 2006 1:32 PM This is how it is. Cool C, Steady B and Canty all made a decision to do wrong. I dont think any of them woke up that morning and said, "Hey, Lets kill a cop". They wanted money plain and simple. But the fact remains and cant be changed, they broke the law and deserve to be locked away. The death penalty is wrong on so many different levels. People will argue both ways but in reality, No one has the right to kill for any reason! Only God has the right to Kill and even he doesnt. No matter what religion you belong to. Period. Posted by: The Truth at March 31, 2006 8:41 PM I just want to say that Cool is our ol-head to my dudes left standing on the Hilltop and we must make his name ring for furture generations. Posted by: RAY WOODS at April 4, 2006 1:48 PM I can not believe that you guys want to immortalize a killer. You want future generation to look up to someone who took the life of someone who was just doing her job. Imagine if ofc Vairds children rode through West Philly and happen to see this huge mural of the person responsible for killing their mother. Honestly I think it is in very poor taste. I live in West Philly and knew Cool C back in the day,but even I would not want to see this mural. Please think about this before you do it. Posted by: monni at April 24, 2006 10:05 PM Yo man this is a shame. Why don't they give Charles Manson the death penalty after all he's done, but just because cool's a black man they do this. I'm a youngbull but love cool's and steady b's music, fan of the hilltop hustlers. I hope he stays strong and keeps his head up and hope they don't do it. Big up to WEST PHILLY,m-BLOCC, PARKSIDE KILLAHS,HILLTOP the whole West Philly! Posted by: T-Loc at May 2, 2006 11:41 PM cool c had so much going on for him he could of chose another path. I don't understand why brothers go out there and do stupid stuff. Posted by: strawcream at May 5, 2006 7:09 PM I recently found about Cool C and my heart fell to my feet. I pray for him all the time and I have written him and he's wrote back. Whoever knows Chris and care about him, please write him and let him know he's in your prayers. I know that will bring him solace in the eye of the storm. I check on the net to see if there's any news about him. I wish someone will show mercy in the court system and let him live. Posted by: Elicia Frezzell at May 13, 2006 12:02 PM FUCK DEATH SENTENCE,FUCK THE GOVERMENT AND FUCK BUSH,BLACK MAN IS STILL ON DEATH ROW IN DA USA,NO METTA IF HES ACTUALY IN DA PEN OR NOT

It's about growing old and watching the seeds man teaching them better. Posted by: Rasidread at May 18, 2006 12:05 PM fuck cool c, punk ass fat boy boob aka steadty b, and dumd ass mark canty, got apprehended riding around trying to buy weed in maryland on the run. fry cool fry. by the way your jeep beat truck is being driven by some ole drunk who hangs at the park on 49th and lancaster ave. still rollin though, ooh ooh u got it the glamorous life. wonder if it still got that banging system. oh by the way. who robbed tgi fridays, the armored car, dunkin donuts and the mellon bank on city ave?were is jojo? Posted by: can i put the needle in u? at May 27, 2006 11:30 PM I was dismayed the first time I heard about COOL C, its a weird system when a man goes from HIT RECORD to DEATH ROW, the so called american dream, where does that concept of human life in the US of A stand on this issue and all those who take satisfaction on what the road holds ahead for COOL C. should read a little deeper, I personally cannot come to terms with the execution of a BLACK MAN who does deserve punishment for his crime I am not saying he should go free, but there is DENNIS RADER (THE BTK KILLER) he got life in prison NOT DEATH after 17 years of killings, Robert Berdella and Henry Lee Lucas and the list goes on, of men who have killed sometimes hundreds of people by one person and got life, BUT WHEN COOL C SHOT A POLICE OFFICER, THE MAN GETS EXECUTED...........THATS THE U.S. of A for you. Can anyone refer me to a site where I can download COOL C music. RCJr. Posted by: Roland Carter at June 6, 2006 4:02 PM You christian pieces of shit make me sick!god my arse, you worship a fraud.Cool C is king, & u toys should remember that.Get a life & help your community not dictate like some modern day gestapo.Life in prison is enough punishment for stupid mistake.Fuck off & pray you poofta cunts! Posted by: flak at June 9, 2006 6:36 AM It's strange how I found out. I used to drive a truck between Chicago and Cleveland in the dead of night and I was listening to a record by Ras Kass and a part of the lyric went "and start robbin' banks like Steady B" and I didn't think about it at first. But then it got me thinking "is that why I hadn't heard nothing from him or Cool C. This was in 2001-02. This year I was reading King or Black Men or one of those men's mags and found out that Cool C was involved. Man, this hurts to find out what I was listening to was true. I'm praying for all who were involved. Posted by: Cornelius at June 17, 2006 11:15 PM When are you Americans going to learn? I come from Australia where, no matter how bad or ugly or horrific the offense, the maximum sentence is jail. Death penalty is cruel and barbaric, and I pray that the U.N. and every life-supporting nation will make the death penalty seen as equivalent to MURDER! Just because some people in curly wigs murder people, doesn't make it legal or right in God's eyes!!! This should serve as a warning and wake-up call to the citizens of the United States of America: protest and petition and yell and scream until murder is illegal in every state! Posted by: Josh at September 21, 2006 2:54 PM I grew up in West Philly the neighborhood called the HILLTOP. I was a young buck when Cool C was out I ain't going to front like he was one of my favorite rappers but his songs the Juice Crew Dis Glamorous Life was that shit and it definitley represented the way niggas was livin it up on Lansdowne Ave. The car shows and the dice game action outside Stacey's Lounge on Redfield Street was a citywide hot spot to be,I remember buying a Sterling 825S when my change got right but the 1st time I ever saw one was before they was even on the market being pushed by Cool C and Steady B I was a young buck like damn what the fuck is that they pushin? . The Hilltop Hustlers click along with Schooly D 3x Dope and The Fresh Prince had West Philly runnin the Philly Rap scene for a minute. Check out the new Hilltop Hustlers movement at htfranchiselive.com and hilltopentertainment.com the rebirth of the old movement is on the way. Posted by: Tee at November 13, 2006 2:41 AM |
