January 25, 2006Jay-Z's First Response to the Cam RecordThe funny/sad thing is, when Jay handles this as if he's a grown man with some sense in his head, half of this ass-backwards "ignorance is strength" hip-hop nation we now live in will probably take it as a sign of weakness, that further jeopardizes his "street cred." From USA Today: Jay-Z says he's not bothered by former Def Jam star Cam'ron, who recently released Gotta Love It, in which he disses Jay-Z. "The artist in me tells me to respond to that immediately," Jay-Z says. "But I know what that's all about. He has an album coming (Killa Season), and how else is he going to get mentioned in USA TODAY or other publications?"Posted by jsmooth995 at January 25, 2006 12:01 AM Comments
"half of this ass-backwards "ignorance is strength" hip-hop nation we now live in..." We no live in? Shan responded to KRS for the same reason Jay wants to respond to Cam. Nothing has changed or gotten worse. Now, real ignorance would be for Jay to shoot Cam. Posted by: Hashim at January 25, 2006 12:48 AM I didn't say it would be ignorant for Jay to respond.. I was commenting on the (IMO) silly way many folks in the audience react to this kind of thing, taking any attempt to resolve a conflict instead of escalating it as a sign of weakness or being a "pussy." Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 25, 2006 1:07 AM It's the way manhood is measured in the community today and it isn't a good look for the future. Posted by: Uncle Cheddi at January 25, 2006 8:51 AM The Shan vs KRS beef isn't in the same league as 50 Cent, Biggie, Tupac, etc. Most people have never even heard of MC Shan. Jay made the obvious move. Anything else would have been childs play. If you continually beef at the top, it proves you have no message, only a desire to maintain your status. Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at January 25, 2006 1:02 PM OK, I guess I'm alone here, but I don't understand the problem if Jay decided to respond on wax. I thought that was what it's all about, teaching the youth to handle your beef through words and music instead of knives and bullets. And the "answer record" was and still is a unique and essential part of hip hop. Not that I fault Jay for not answering (which in itself is a pretty bad dis), I just wouldn't fault him if he did, either. And if my memory of high school serves me right, the accusations of being "weak" or a "pussy" is just the fans' sour grapes at not being able to see a good fight. ;) Posted by: kami at January 25, 2006 1:24 PM Us as men don't have a rite of passage to becoming men anymore. There is no event that happens in our culture that's allows us the priviledge to call OURSELVES a man. There, we have a society of boys acting how they think men should without elders to set us straight. It has to start from somewhere or else this type of mentality will thrive for more generations to come. Posted by: tee smif at January 25, 2006 1:33 PM jay-z doesnt need to respond to cam on this matter. he has proven before that he will murder people and he will do so to cam. it would be just a waste of jay's time to respond. Posted by: phoenix at January 25, 2006 2:37 PM I don't think we disagree kami, I wouldn't necessarily fault Jay either way.. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 25, 2006 3:06 PM Killa Cam needs to kill dat noise... with his nursery school rymes... "1-2-3 I rap about JZ. 4-5-6 I hope they all "cop" this". I made a funny. Posted by: shaishaigirl at January 25, 2006 5:34 PM Remember that Ice Cube waited a LONG TIME before replying to N.W.A. in the infamous "No Vaseline". The word on the street was that Cube was soft, and that he was on the East Coast's dick for having the Bomb Squad produce his solo joint. It wasn't until "Death Certificate" dropped that Cube decided to make a dis track, and IMO it is still the greatest dis track in hip-hop history. In one song, he singlehandedly tore down the N.W.A. myth that he helped create. At the time, the press only focused on his use of the word "Jew" to describe Jerry Heller, but the real fans knew what Cube had done: "No Vaseline" is less a dis track than a wake-up call to the remaining Niggaz With Attitude, telling them to look after their money before it was too late. I think Jay is smart to let Cam talk his smack. Maybe Cam will dis him a few more times, until Jay unleashes a devastating rebuke of his former protege that goes beyond name-calling and into the realm of "check yo'self before you wreck yo'self"... Posted by: James at January 25, 2006 8:19 PM CAN WE GET A COMMENT FROM DAME DASH PLEASE! This is topic is getting old.....tired of dis tracks....and kings of hiphop fugg it....find a new emperor with new clothes. It's just free publicity for anything Jay decides to do now. Posted by: Pez at January 27, 2006 5:56 PM Let me some up Cam's catalogue. "2 of them shits were doo and the other 2 were on Jay's Lable". Jay's verse on "Welcome to NY City", made the Come home with me album. Cam is a funny dude and I love the Purple Haze album (thought it was very underrated), but this guy raps like preschooler half the time. For instance "okey dokey I leave bitches pokey pokey". It's funny and all, but you can't take lyrics like that seriously. I did however think the Fragil rock innuendos were hilarious. As far as the Dame shit, him and Biggs should have gave up the master copy to Reasonable Doubt and they could have had the Roc name. Kanye West is a grown mand and can side with whoever he wants. Bottom line...Jay is the best that's ever done it! He doesn't have to say a word and I like the statement that Kami made (that in itself wins the battle in my book);although I really want to hear the rebutle to this corny dis track. Posted by: The Trade Man at January 28, 2006 10:01 PM I am glad Jay handled it with some maturity and professionalism. Posted by: wes at January 29, 2006 6:14 PM I just got done reading the new XXL article with Cam and this may some really ignorant, but I think Cam set himself up to get shot. This guy just happened to get shot in the same exact spot in both arms and both those areas don't cause any damage to the body. I also feel that he lost the battle already with one statement he made about Jay & Nas. He said that their both to old and 15 and 16 year old kids don't care about their music. The 30 year old Cam, then said if 15 and 16 year olds don't care then neither does he...implying that he makes music for kids. I like Cam and all, but this type of thought is stunting the growth of hip-hop. He needs to realize that the industry is grown and is moving into adult culture now. I personally don't want to hear a bunch of babbage written to appeal to high school kids. I'm not a huge fan of the younger rappers and find it hard to take seriously. I want someone to portray experience in their thought process and speak on intellectual terms. Once again, I like Cam but his shit is Wal-Mart brand...generic! Posted by: chris at February 4, 2006 9:08 PM Though I think Jay-Z will be all but forced to respond to Camron's track, I believe that his current position on the matter, that being no response, is in fact an indication that hip-hop is indeed making progress. Posted by: Dr. Andre Muhammad at February 6, 2006 11:51 AM Sounds like Cam had a case. But you have to be a die-hard Diplomats fan to not see that he missed his chance. He might have flown his plane into the towers, but them shits were little planes, with not much gasoline, and I don't think anyone thinks Jay's laying at Ground Zero because Cam dissed his sandals. Hiphop vets know a few things to look for that immediately know this is a money grab beef. 1- new album coming 2- going after someone way above you 3- shooting, a very safe shooting 4- didn't dude just go after a girl, like they already did going after Kelis, is that hard? Posted by: Wu Disciple at February 6, 2006 12:33 PM Did yall see Jim Jones get jumped and Cam'ron running away leaving him there. Then he says they took it like a man(what??) and it's all true. Prettey messed up huh?. Beef sucks, the only one who loses are the fans. Posted by: Manish Boy or Boyish Man? at February 6, 2006 11:17 PM It really doesn't matter what nobody else thinks because being the bigger man is knowing when to walk away, unless somethings about to jump off right there and then, but in my opinion Cam'ron hasn't touched Jay-Z with this new song, because Jay has nothing to prove it's Cam who has something to prove and that's why he's coming at Jigga. When Cam become Vice pres. of Roc-a-Fella Jigga didn't agree with the idea and he said so himself, but he walked away to bigger and better things. I'm strictly wit Nas all the way because that's my favorite rapper, so if Cam is really gonna prove something use some real lyrics like my boy did even though that beef was all about the $$$... The man has part ownership in a NBA basketball team, and could be on top of Def Jam Records one day. Do u think he really has sometime to respond to that bullshit song!!!!!!! C'mon now if u were really smart u would see that Cam and Jay were never really that cool anyway, and Cam'ron know's that Jay would've loved the position he has now with the Roc so he just wants rub some shit in Jigga's face, but like I said b4 what Jay have to really prove. This shit is only a bullshit way to bring him out of retirement and make another record. Plus the only thing I can really agree with Cam on is that he shot straight for the top because he know's if a beef could start up that's the more money made goiing in his pocket!!!!!!! Look at the real picture man and stop worrying about some dumb ass beef!!!!!! Fo real!! And ya talking about Cam's record being a move to sell, Well a lot of people think Jay's and Nas beef was to sell also. If any1 is trying to sell shit its Jay: rocawear, been in beer commercials, s.carter snearkers, hes sold just about everything but his huge ass lips. Posted by: steve at February 13, 2006 4:17 PM I love Cam's "Yoda Flow", that's what I like to call it, it's backwards and shit, but I think Jay-Z was more paying respect to the rappers that influenced him more than stealing their rhymes. It's not his fault that we're such bad hip hop fans, and so mainstream now that we can't tell that he's using some of the legends of hip-hop's lyrics until Cam' tells us he "stole" em. Yeah he might have taken some rhymes from other rappers, but what rapper hasn't? Name one rapper who has not sampled a beat or used a rhyme that another rapper originated. Hell everybody bites BIGGIE, shit he's the best that ever did it. Furthermore, Jay's hottest rhymes was the original ones. I ain't saying Cam's wack, cuz to me, that nigga can rhyme. Forget about his style, listen to the man's lyrics. He's nice. But that still don't give him a right to throw rocks at the throne. Check Jay's record- 5 platinum albums, multi million dollar man and he'll bury Cam on a response track. Y'all don't know what y'all talking about. I am 29, grew up around Cam, Dame, and Jim Jones in Harlem. I got alot of love for those guys and can't forget Bloodshed either. I read all yall comments, listened to Cam on Swagger Jacker and he kinda opened some things up about Jay, no doubt. The question is, can he beef with Jay? This is hip hop. You can not retire with the belt or the thrown. LL didn't let Canibus get away with it. Jay can igg him, and in a "normal world" that would prove he is the bigger man. But this is hip hip people. If you the best, you gotta prove it. straight up. Money or no money. Cam has the credibilty to challenge Jay. Jay needs to answer. I like both artist, and feel Jay is better than Cam overall for now. We'll see how long that last though. Purple Haze was hot and Dipset Anthem is still my favorite. If Jay doesn't answer, that would be a big disappointment because we all know the if Big was being called out, he would stand up (R.I.P). Just for the record Cam jacked a few lines also. Jay needs to get back to the street with some heat. I feel if he is the best, then he can come back to the street and represent. If not, maybe he is a swagger jacker. NY has no King right now. Who's gonna pull the sword out the stone? Cam? Jay? Or maybe someone else. The south is bangin right now. Where we at NY? STAND UP!! Step in the ring Jay. You to young to retire.
