Walmart Trying to Sneak Into NYC?

I was just saying to somebody this weekend, "well at least we don't have a Walmart here yet.." but according to this protest I may not be able to say that for long?

Protest Against Backdoor Walmart in the Bronx

Please join with the UFCW, Community Organizations, Small Business Groups,
Members of the Clergy and organizations concerned with responsible and
accountable development at a:

Press Conference and Rally to
Slam "The Backdoor" on Walmart and BJ's

Monday January 23rd
Noon
Steps of New York City Hall

By seeking approval from the City Council to build the new Gateway Mall at
the Bronx Terminal Market and failing to identify the tenants of the proposed
mall, developers are providing a "backdoor" for Walmart and BJ's to
escape scrutiny of their labor and business practices. This deception cannot
be allowed.

In fact, there was a group tabling outside a grocery store in Park Slope some time ago about a similar plan being hatched, perhaps for Red Hook?

Wal-Mart is good for consumers.

...but bad for human beings.

Interesting.. the term Lassiez-fare has fully escaped us all.

I agree Wal-Mart may be (And I say may becuase 40% of my family isn't in urban areas and this chain IS what they have) evil but within NYC, they would face wage competition more so than almost ANY market in the world.
Are we to believe that customers.. Such as ourselves will choose low prices over the moral right?? Oh Wait... We probably will.

I say let them come... and once they fail it will prove a truth known for centuries... People will accept only what they have to ... If a job pays 5% less but offers you benefits and you have kids... It might present a problem.. but right now I think those same people don't even have that.

But hey I shop in Costco as if its the only place on the map.
