February 23, 2006Public Enemy Golf Commercial??We don't have TV here in the hiphopmusic hobbit hole, but sources tell me there's a commercial running now that uses Public Enemy's "By the Time I Get to Arizona" to promote the PGA Tour. Can anyone help eradicate what remains of my sanity by confirming this? I never thought anything would top the "Revolution Will not be Televised" Nike ad, but this just might do it. A warning: if I ever hear "Strange Fruit" in a Dannon yogurt commercial or something, I'm going to build a nuclear weapon. Posted by jsmooth995 at February 23, 2006 11:42 PMComments
what, the, f***? Posted by: cbk at February 24, 2006 9:49 AM It was on USA for the Chrysler Classic of Tuscon. I'll try to record the commercial tonight (assuming they air it again) as I'll be indulging my Law & Order fixation anyway. Posted by: chr0me_kitten at February 24, 2006 6:34 PM Jay, you're old and smart enough now to have spotted even more irony and hypocrisy in the activities of these so-called conscious rappers you've been posting about. As far as I'm concerned, 'conscious' is an Orwellian word for 'ignorant bigot'. Don't make me go down the list of who and what they said- you know exactly what I'm talking about. And don't cop out by pointing to similar offenses by their White counterparts; I'm much quicker to denounce those when I hear them. BTW, have you noticed that all pornstars are at least a little bit crosseyed? What's going on there? Am I a hypocrite for making this group observation? Perhaps they're all in need of a little help- a charitable eye surgery fund maybe? Chuck D's rhymes from the song are nowhere to be heard in the commerical. They are only using the guitar riffs in the song, which I believe was sampled from a Mandrill track - so technically, it's the Mandrill song and not P.E.'s song itself. It's not as shocking as you would think. But I did look at the commerical and say to myself, "What the fluuuuke?" Posted by: Trent at February 25, 2006 3:04 AM Yeah the sample is from a Mandrill song, I forget the name.. them using that song would only be slightly less weird though, that's a pretty obscure track. Posted by: Jay Smooth at February 25, 2006 5:24 AM If it is the Mandrill track and not PE, 5 bucks says that what happened was that the music supervisor wanted the PE track, Chuck said hell no, so they opted for the original sample itself. Posted by: ASG at February 25, 2006 10:40 AM To ASG: Or . . . The music supervisor heard the P.E. song, contacted the publishing company and found out that Mandrill owns the entire publishing and licensing of that song (since P.E. sampled the guitar riff). PGA paid the licensing fee and -- boom! -- Tiger Woods has a soundtrack. But who knows? I don't think its shocking or blasphemous. Again, the guitar riff is the only thing that's heard throughout the commercial. So its more of rocker-theme anthem than a misplaced political statement. I'm quite sure the PGA has no idea about the P.E. song. But who knows? I haven't seen the commerical lately though. They were playing it alot during Tiger's first win this year at the Buick International. Maybe Chuck D fought the powers that be (get it?). Yeah I know that was wack . . . Posted by: Trent at February 25, 2006 10:26 PM I've managed to save up roughly $11341 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot? Posted by: Courtney Gidts at May 23, 2006 8:56 PM I can't believe it, my co-worker just bought a car for $44814. Isn't that crazy! Posted by: Betsy Markum at May 23, 2006 8:56 PM ok...does any one kno the name of the Mandrill track...its pretty bangin.... and i've been tryin to find out for a while...
