The NY Post's Bill Hoffman on Proof's Death

Yes, I know pointing out shoddy NY Post articles is like complaining that water is wet. But even by their umm, "standards," this Bill Hoffman piece is a remarkable blend of heartlessness and cluelessness:

EMINEM'S RAPPER PAL BLOWN AWAY

Red-hot rapper Proof - a close pal of Eminem - was executed in a Detroit nightclub early yesterday when a gunman blew his brains out during a heated argument...

...It was not immediately known what the argument was about or whether it was part of the ongoing East Coast-West Coast rap war that has claimed such hip-hop greats as the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur...

Okay I didn't go to journalism school.. perhaps there's a section I'm not aware of in the Columbia Style Guide, on the tasteful usage of "blew his brains out" in crime reportage? But I did graduate from 3rd grade, and one thing I learned there was how to find Detroit on a map. It wasn't on the East Coast. They also taught us what the word "ongoing" means, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean "ended about ten years ago."

(As noted by Hashim, Bill Hoffman can theoretically be reached at bill.hoffman@nypost.com, and I'll add that his, umm, "editors" are at letters@nypost.com and cshaw@nypost.com)

Too sad. I dun'no enough to comment much, but:
"the ongoing East Coast-West Coast rap war that has claimed such hip-hop greats as the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur."
Are they f'in kidding us? Yeaahhh more like the ongoing copsvscivilianswar.

"Eminem's Rapper Pal Blown Away."
Thats some heartless headline.
Fuck. If yr' gon'na say "blown away" why not "Father/Son/Brother Blown Away" Ggrrrrrr. Oh well, at least they don't keep writers tucked away in BK apts on expense accounts. A'hem.

Hate to sound paranoid J...but have you heard that d12/Gorillaz song "911" errrmmmm...yeah...You tell me.

c'mon jay - i mean, have you ever used the post for anything other than to line your birdcage?

this is a paper that published the words "good riddance" on its front page when arafat died and routinely refers to people it hates [democrats, socialists, union members, anyone with a moderate "tan", etc.] as "scum", so you can't be too surprised by its ignorance/

does have a good sports section though...

Asking the NY Post to have compassion is no different than petitioning Hollywood to script non-stereotypical black, asian and latino characters in a summer blockbuster. It's not likely to happen. By the way, the bill hoffman email address will get you nowhere. It bounces back. I'll try the others.

Thanks for posting this, Jay... here's what I emailed:

Mr. Hoffman,

Proof wasn't just a rapper, he was also a man. As such, he deserves to have his passing memorialized with more respectful diction than "a gunman blew his brains out." I suspect such inflammatory verbiage would never have been used if an ambassador, actor or even rock star had been the victim of this horrible crime. I was sickened.

I am not surprised, however, to find such insensitivity to Mr. Holton, given the general lack of journalistic standards in your piece. The "East Coast-West Coast rap war" which you claim was "ongoing" ended ten years ago. It is no more ongoing than the Clinton administration. Furthermore, last time I checked, the closest Detroit came to a coast was the shore of Lake Michigan.

btw... you've got an extra "n" at the end of Hoffman.

Why should the MSM take rappers seriously if they're not going to take their own lives seriously?

Posted by: Bol at April 13, 2006 12:43 PM

Tha's Crazy i don't even bother to write editors on dumb ass pieces and so on but i had to take my time out to get at homie.

In regards to your article about Detroit rapper Proof being murdered.................you're a fucking idiot. How would you feel if one of your children, family members, or even close friends were murdered and you pick up the paper and read Bill Hoffman's son has his "brains blowed out". I honestly feel like the blatent disrespect that you wrote with was too obvious to be due to a lack of consciousness. I rather choose to beleive that your article was intentionally disrespectful. I was going to end this letter that you'll probably never read with a rude disrespectful comment such as fuck you. However, I am above your level. All I wish that you do is realize that life does exist outside of your small world from your apartment or house to your office. And to talk about a much loved human life that way was flat out wrong.

Also, even in this temperature-sensitive plastic status rap world of today, Proof was never anywhere near "red-hot". Rick Ross is a bigger blip on the radar more than Proof ever was and I hardly consider him an emcee.

Hey! Bill your article is proof that your a complete moron and that you lack common sense and compassion. Your article about Proof was extremely distasteful and full of ignorance. Next time talk to someone before proving your writting skills are completely worthless. Plus, Hip Hop is so violent becarefull our your brains might get blown away right outside your office.

Man, this was totally unexpected, I didn't D12 roll this deep, I mean this is the second shooting involving a D12 member in 4 months, first Obie Trice and now Proof (R.I.P.). I dont know how D12 can get over this, now its gonna be called D10. But anyway just like BIG said "U JUST A MEMORY UNTIL SOMEBODY KILLS U". R.I.P.
