Subway Series: Spitting on Trains, Flowing On Water

Subway Series: Baba Israel Subway Series: Outside the Ferry Subway Series: Spitting on the Train Subway Series: Spitting on the Train Subway Series: Call and Response on the Ferry

Last night I caught the latest Subway Series, where emcees, singers, dancers and beatboxers meet up to stage a travelling concert on a NY subway train. This was their last event for a while, so they went out in style by starting on the train then moving up to the Staten Island Ferry and treating commuters to "the world's first floating cypher" (as one freestyler put it).

I thought it was a very cool event that showcased the best of what hip-hop can be, just like Joe described it. Hopefully my pics get a little of that energy across:

Man, I haven't heard Click rhyme for a good minute. I almost forgot about him. Was the event hot?

Sounds dope man...taking it back to the streets. Too bad the West is too spread out. We'd have to rock the transit bus system!!

Jazz, Blues, Rock and Roll, and Reggae were the music that represented African-descended culture during those eras, and spread across lines of gender, colour of skin, and texture of hair. However, those musical genres were not recognized as a distinct culture. Hiphop has always identified itself as a culture first, with its subsequent emerging artistic expressions.

Hiphop culture is primarily urban but its influence knows no frontiers.

Check out this website for some great info on Hip Hop in Canada:

Cheers!
