July 5, 2006Net Neutrality: Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.Like the Abstract, I've been slow on posting about this cuz I found it hard to make a pithy paragraph about it. But it's too serious to ignore so I'm just gonna let the experts speak for themselves: Comments
In a merket like New York, this is not such a big deal, because if my provider doesn't support a site I like, I can switch providers. However, small markets usually only have one company as the ISP, and they would be captive to their content bias. Posted by: Hashim at July 5, 2006 2:29 PM Seeing as how the cable companies and the phone companies are starting to collaborate on legislation that was earlier dividing them, I wouldn't be so quick to assume "market forces" will save us New Yorkers from their content bias. Like Sirius and XM, one might offer Coke and the other might offer Pepsi, but neither are gonna give you the good stuff lke hiphopmusic.com. Posted by: Josh at July 6, 2006 12:29 AM Hashim, but what if your new provider also doesn't provide a different site that you like? or makes sure that all non-major (read: paying) websites load much faster than your favorite online mom-and-pop record store? at some point you're gonna run out of options. this is a HUGE deal, homey. Posted by: damali at July 6, 2006 11:38 AM Hi there, I work with Hands Off the Internet, which takes the other side. The video above is riddled with factual errors and amounts to nothing more than scare tactics. This is a debate between companies like Google on one side and Verizon on the other, and it's about how to pay for upgrading the Internet. But the Google side has been spreading a lot of misinformation around the blogosphere. Also, if you check out our site, there's a lot of good info there. Posted by: ghoti06 at July 6, 2006 12:15 PM Ghoti: Thanks for stopping by. I have been to your site, and I'd have to say I didn't find it very convincing. I saw a lot of broad generalizations and unsubstantiated accusations, much like in your post here, but little if any substantive refutation of the specifics offered by Net Neutrality advocates. I was also troubled to find that (unlike savetheinternet.com) your "blog" does not allow any replies or discussion, which gives the impression you are not comfortable with an open dialogue on these issues. So I would very much appreciate it if you continued to participate in our discussion here, and addressed our concerns directly and in detail. You could start by giving specific examples of the "factual errors" you claim this video contains, and the "misinformation" you accuse Google of spreading.
