July 12, 2006Will.I.Am: Calling Black Eyed Peas "Hip-Hop" is an InsultUhh yeah, I'm not commenting on this one either. WILL.I.AM: 'DON'T CALL US HIP-HOP' (via that good good) Posted by jsmooth995 at July 12, 2006 12:58 PMComments
that good good links to Contact music which doesn't give you any real info about where Contact lifted the item from (that's Contact's mo), apparently the quote was made in an issue of XXL: I never like these kinds of generalizations but given the shit the Black Eyed Peas have had to put up with from hip hop fans why shouldn't they turn their back on that designation now that they're pop stars? Posted by: Clyde Smith at July 12, 2006 2:34 PM You know I ain't really a big fan of the BEP's product. But I'm also not a big fan at just slinging shit and vomit. That being said, snickers commercial considered, I can't really attack this bruva on this issue. Because he has a valid point. He's not directing his comment at Wu, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, BDP etcetera. Or any of the hiphop from before the versace wars. He's kinda pulling the curtain back on all of these new dudes. This is very delicate. Because there is truth in his statement. It ain't really worth saying "well look at y'all (BEP). y'all group pulled hiphop into some weirdo shit so y'all kinda the blame to..." It's just some truth in his statement. Sometime shit is complex. -Black People Posted by: Black People at July 12, 2006 2:41 PM This is the music ensemble that brought us the epic performance piece "My Humps," right? Right. Posted by: Delux at July 12, 2006 3:01 PM That's right, the BEP's are not hip-hop. They are hip-pop, just straight sell out pop music. They used to be hip-hop. That was when they were good. Shame on Will.I.Am to generalize hip-hop that way, like all hip-hop is negative. That's b.s. Posted by: Kujo at July 12, 2006 7:00 PM While I understand where Will is coming from, I don't agree with what he's saying. No matter which camp your in regarding B.E.P., I don't think anyone can draw the line and say "If you go behind this point, your out of here." Nor do I think that one can simply declassify themselves just because they've grown tired or outgrown certain aspects of the scene. Posted by: Mighty Maestro at July 12, 2006 9:37 PM I actually happen to be a fan of the Black Eyes Peas and not in my wildest dreams would I ever have considered them to be a hip-hop band. I think they are a great band! I do enjoy their music though I do sometimes think it is a bit off the wall. Unsigned Posted by: Freedomgirl at July 12, 2006 10:30 PM Can I say that Fergie is the only conclusive evidence we've ever seen that the white woman is the devil? Is that kosher? Posted by: Anil at July 13, 2006 12:28 AM I feel what he's sayin. There comes a point where a decent human being tires of hiphop, no matter how much of a fan he is. This is a phenomena reflected in songs such as DMX's new persona. On the contrary, the real hiphop is none of this commercial bs on the radio anyway so... But to play the devil's advocate, even jeru capitalized on hanging "with crack sellin, armed and dangerous felons" - and that shit just don't appeal to the fathers and mothers out there. Don't get me wrong, if you're in the hood you might not have any other choice but just know if you're kickin down my door it might hurt my feelings to pop you - true to peace-loving roots I'd rather turn to. After all, where has RAP(not hiphop) gotten us in the present day anyhow? It doesn't exist anymore on a real level at all to me - given I reject violence fuckin mad hoz at once and fake thugs. Posted by: As long as you...respect...ummmm at July 13, 2006 6:43 AM Well if my memory serves me correct... he wanted to be known as Hip Hop a few months back. They are popish ... not suprising. Posted by: Nina Morena at July 13, 2006 8:52 AM I got a completely different take from it. I took that as him suggesting that since all the so-called Hiphop radio stations and video outlets ignore the BEPs, then that must mean they're not Hiphop. But flip that, clearly Will I Am knows what he's doing is at the very least Hiphop-influenced. I thnk he's taking a pot shot at the so-called Hiphop outlets to remind them that they're playing nothing but a bunch of rap clones 24-7 and not trying to intriduce andything new and/or different into their steady rotation. So, using Will's logic, if that music that is played is Hiphop, then since they don't play BEPs that can't be Hiphop. We all know Will I Am has sick freestyling abilities and he can breakdance crazy. Dude is Hiphop to the core. He was just expressing his frustration with the current climate of rap. Disclaimer: by the way you don't have to do traditional Hiphop to be considered Hiphop. Posted by: Belve at July 13, 2006 5:42 PM Whilst most of mainstream rap these days seems content to talk about nothing much in particular, the Black Eyed Peas seem more vague than most. Whilst their basic message is more upbeat than a lot of the other violent stuff, lyrically it's just as aimlessy and meandering. Posted by: Sam at July 15, 2006 10:48 AM This is convenient considering Blacked Eyed Peas has crossed over now. When white people get tired of their music then they'll come crawling back begging to be in hip-hop again. Will I.AM is a turn-coat if this statement is true. Hip-Hop is more than gangtsa rap. VH1 Soul reflects that. The Okay Players did as well. Considering the group started out as B-boys you would think they of all people would understand. Posted by: J-Dot at July 15, 2006 1:56 PM Well it makes alot of sense doesnt it? I mean, hiphop is very angry and negotive, mabye what Will needs to do is focus on those deep and meaning-full hits that made his group so big, such "My Hump's" and "Dont Phunk With My Heart". Im glad that we have such songs as those to direct and mould our youth in such a world where the evils of hiphop are praised. Bsides, Will's welcome to start singing on his tracks if thats the way he feels, i wont miss their cds at the rap section at the store. And in the immortal and meaningfull words of the BEP's Posted by: R&R C.D.K at July 23, 2006 4:35 AM It takes a honest person to know when his shit is not hip hop. A lot of these so called rap niggaz need to follow his pattern. Posted by: vodka at July 25, 2006 11:50 AM well i neva considered tha beps as hip hop- and no william hip hop is not all negative an bad- and it dont give us niggas a bad name- it gives us a good one- cos we be recognised for something Posted by: snoop dogg girl at August 13, 2006 1:22 AM will.i.am is gay the black nigger Posted by: will.i.am at October 3, 2006 5:20 PM will.i.am is gay the black nigger Posted by: will.i.am at October 3, 2006 5:20 PM |
