January 16, 2007VIDEO: The Men Behind the "White Rapper Show"Okay y'all, we're back. 2007 is our 10th anniversary here, and I'm gonna be trying some new things, mainly adding more video to the site. My first attempt at what the kids call "vlogging" is this clip of my interview with Sacha Jenkins, Jeff "Chairman" Mao" and Elliott Wilson, 3/5ths But this month I will be stealing somebody's cable so I can catch their latest VH1 misadventure, "Ego Trip's The White Rapper Show," on which ten aspiring caucasian emcees compete for a chance to become the next Miilkbone. The crew came to visit us a few days before the premiere, and explained their master plan. Apologies in advance for Elliott's face being blocked out, my cameraman was drunk. I hadn't seen the show yet when we did the interview, caught it since then but I'm still processing the many levels of absurdity. What do y'all think of it so far? I think the show is HILARIOUS! I see the show as pure entertainment and nothing serious, unlike the majority of those in the chatroom. I missed the second episode last night, but I'll catch one of the re-broadcasts later this week. About the "vlogging", It's always good to try new things every now and then. This is one of your old high school peeps. I didn't know the show was still going all this time! The video is cool, but how about getting a podcast on there. I'm in London so I can't listen to the show through the live stream (unless I get up at 5am Sunday, which is not gonna happen). Anyhow-- keep up the good work. Posted by: Kai at January 17, 2007 4:17 AM DJ, you're in for a treat! They do some uprocking! They play a game called "You better recognize!" Every episode is so entertaining. Posted by: janine at January 17, 2007 11:44 AM This is fantastic, J. Posted by: Jesse at January 17, 2007 12:10 PM I haven't watched the vid yet but I know that soundtrack to Ego Trip's big book of rap lists was sick. I has I'm Not Playin by the Ultimate Force. Do It Do It. and um what else? And a fly album cover with the patrick ewings on it and speakers as skyscrapers. nice history lesson in it as well. came out several years ago and is worth every penny. -Black People Posted by: Black People at January 17, 2007 1:54 PM ...AND you get white people explaining to other white people what happens when white people drink: "they f*** s*** up!" Posted by: janine at January 17, 2007 5:44 PM Feeling the vlog direction. I know people are mad suspect at the white rapper show but the Ego Trip crew are real deal hip hop so I think cats have gotta let the show ride for a second and see how it plays out before jumping to conclusions about it. There's obviously some sort of satirical commentary on race they are trying to make with this show so I'm curious as to how it'll develop over further episodes. Posted by: ian at January 17, 2007 9:59 PM excellent. nice editing mr. smooth. Posted by: the shizzled wizzle at January 18, 2007 12:56 AM man this show is corny. i saw it on vh1 funny with all the white stereotypes but im tired of reality shows. Posted by: trusouth at January 18, 2007 11:49 PM I probably should be too. I got cable six months ago and am now seriously back on the "horse," completely uncritical in my blind love for sweet cable. Ususally I try to bring my A game to HipHopMusic.com, but Ego Trip's got me on some serious Chris Farley action (Remember when G-Child couldn't get out of the phone booth? ...that was awesome!) Posted by: janine at January 19, 2007 1:30 PM Great Idea!! love the vlog man!! Posted by: jls at January 20, 2007 9:34 AM the white rapper show is OBVIOUSLY pure comedy and in NO WAY did those guys have it in their mind at ANY point that this is even 3% serious. It's just that there is not one ounce of originality or anything truly clever to balance out the incredible amount of corny over-used white stereo-types (that would be deemed ridiculously racist if it were against any other race) what's worse is how many people love to safely jump on the vanilla-ice diss bandwagon. Gimme a break. I would love to see him kick the shit out of one of these people. And i truly hate that Serch, someone who has been down for a lot longer than you know. From his T La Rock, warlock records days, and Tony D battles, to helping Nas get in the door, has to resort to abusing unsuspecting white kids who were chosen purely to make fools of themselves. c'mon. what a world. it's insane that Vh-1 has become the home of TV shows staring and featuring rappers who have not succesfully rapped in a decade. whatever... Posted by: JS1 at January 23, 2007 1:30 AM Hey Ego Trips! You guys are the best. Know that your stuff is in my high school classroom. I taped "Race-o-Rama" for my kids; we use "Ego Trips' Big Book of Racism" in my class also. Of course, only the most intelligent, aware kids are able to appreciate the pointed humor. I had a student a couple of weeks ago who came in, I showed him the bookcase, he grabbed the "Big Book of Racism", and never put it down for the next five days he was with us! He would continue reading it along with the classwork we did together. And periodically you would hear him chuckling... I find the "White Rappers" Show to be terrific! It takes stereotypes and stretches them to their limits, until the human beings behind the stereotypes break through and emerge, as "people", just like us in every way. Some smart, some less so; some big-minded, some small-minded; but no matter who we are we all share a desire to say something important, and to be heard and appreciated for what we say. I'm going to tape that one for my kids also -- will you put it out on DVD someday? I can only hope that the bigwigs STAY AWAY on the days I'm playing "White Rappers" in class, because it's annoying trying to explain what I'm doing to unsympathetic administrators! Thanks again Ego Trippers! If the label didn't go belly up, Miilk might have become a star....yes, his ill fated comeback in 2001 was suspect, but even that album had some bangers....take away the questionable production, his lyrics and flow was onpoint...then again, in today's hip hop world, what does anyone care about lyrics anyway!!?? Posted by: Dave at February 6, 2007 7:25 PM Dave, take your first sentence: "I will never watch this show....it's a disgrace" and apply the logic of your last sentence: at least listen to the first album first before making any comments. And for the record, I didn't say anything negative about Miilkbone.. his album was decent as I recall. Posted by: Jay Smooth at February 6, 2007 10:04 PM Hello Hello, I'm over a month late here but being from the WEST SIIIDE as well as a self-professed online community/reality show expert I'm going to have my 2 cents. :p I'm with Mama Smooth up there, the show is smarter than most and if you take the time to watch, absorb, and cue in on the subtle parody's they toss out every show you can't help but smile. It's a fun show. I have to admit, when I was 16 I co-wrote a rap with my bestfriend and we used to go to dances and "rap it" to whoever was in listening distance. Man, if I could take one thing back from my past that would be it. I sucked bad. Nevertheless, I think I know a good rapper when I hear one and there were some winners on the show. The "King of the Burbs", John Brown, happens to come from Davis, which is about 20 miles from my hometown, Sacramento. The boy can write and he's a thinker. His weirdoness is weird but he definitely grows on you and his shaky nervousness shows he was putting himself out there even though he got butterflies. Some of us think performing on stage comes so easily for performers, it's nice to see the mistakes and the making of a star - the grit of reality. "Shamrock" basically spits out words faster than a speeding bullet and can think fast as well. He took what he lacked in getting the audience behind him and went with it during the finale. "G-Child" - I think was her name, the episode where she had to rap with the 3 other guys - omigod, she cracked me up. Her little dance at the end had me searching for replays of the show for days. Her style and rapper love for her Idol, Rob Van Winkle aka: Vanilla Ice, was cool. I was disappointed to see "Persia" go. She left one episode too early. Why?! Why did you have to give up, girl?? Damn. The lyrics she, John Brown and Just Rhyme came up with for the club song competition (played at the stripper joint) kicked ass. That beat (Blaze) was funky, too. I would have loved to see what Persia had for the Kings of freestyle in the Detroit competition. So this being "reality" I don't know how much editing had to do with the whole show but it was a fun ride. ego trippin' did good. Love the opening theme song, too. Funky lil beat. --- that's all folks,
Posted by: Krystyn at March 7, 2007 7:02 PM Whoot whoot! So did you see other episodes, Jay? They got to meet Grand Master Flash. How cool is that? Maybe Ego Trip will do an Asian Rapper Show and feature Jin and Dreammm, although I just saw some show where Jin freestyled against some guy and pretty much got dogged. Anyway, VH1's ego trippin' white rapper show wouldn't have been as good without MC Serch. "This is not a game, folks!" -flopsy flopsy Posted by: Krystyn at March 7, 2007 7:45 PM Hey J! Your Web links for mixes are all inaccesible. Users can't stream or download the mixes. Let me know when they are back online. I used to visit your site back in the 90's and remember you having the badest mixes around posted. By the way, great job on the new web site! -B Posted by: Bob at April 3, 2007 12:44 PM |
