September 3, 2007CNN Panel on the "Read A Book" CartoonThis host gives me a headache. I love how they start off totally misrepresenting Paul Porter's position, cuz they're so fixated on their formula of conflict-driven theater. Then when the discussion doesn't match his preconceived notions, the host resorts to drowning out the conversation with condescending grunts and grumbles. Is he the Black O'Reilly Posted by: JonRUD at September 3, 2007 1:10 AM Lets be real. As they said .. If your child is watching Rap City or 106 and Park and this cartoon satire seems over the top, you should have your child taken away. and another point is that has me vexed is the idea that kids don't understand. If yoou think that and don't remember the things you were into at that age and how much more advanced that you were, you aren't as in tune with your children as you want to think. THAT BEING SAID .. the times this video is on is wrong and thats not those guys problem. They made it but when it plays is the chioce of the network. If this came on during the days of BET Uncut and was played then .. NO ONE would have a problem with it. And it would satire those exact images. Posted by: Belve at September 3, 2007 2:17 AM im tired of defending rap to utter fools. Posted by: trusouth at September 3, 2007 2:30 AM im tired of defending hip hop to fools. Posted by: trusouth at September 3, 2007 2:34 AM The media promulgates the myth that it is concerned about kids because its entire business model is based on the television-assisted lobotomization of these same kids they want to "protect" (from non-TV influence, of course). These non-discussions about protecting the kids have a thinly veiled message to parents: "don't feel bad about your kids watching 5 hours of television per day... we will protect them harmful content!" When a child watches TV, it is at the expense of social, structured, self-directed activities (sports, music, art, reading, etc.). TV makes kids dependent on an external -- not to mention corporate and profit-driven --source of stimulation. TV robs kids of self-direction. This is why study after study shows that the majority of today's youth say they get easily bored. Kids who lack self-direction get bored. Kids without discipline get bored. Kids who are isolated at home get bored. The host in this clip wants us to believe the lie that television CONTENT, not television ITSELF is to blame for some vague threat to the kids. Yet he never bothers to mention what that threat is. Oh yes, there is a threat. And it is the threat of television itself. Child development -- and thus a child's success -- is a function of structured activity. Television, regardless of the content, is NOT a structured activity. I would argue that even the worst imaginable content (think rap videos) has a negligible impact on young people who watch less than 1hr of television per day. Unfortunately, the average child watches about 4 hours of television per day. FOUR HOURS!! Oh, and there is an actual, real, life-threatening result of watching too much TV. It's called heart disease. And it is America's #1 killer. Posted by: eric at September 3, 2007 2:41 AM This is disturbing. I'm not a regular BET watcher and I don't claim to understand the full context of this satire, but it doesn't strain my intuition to realize that the images and sounds in question are a pretty trenchant critique of the entertainment industry, and one that in fact *agrees* with the purported "pro-family" position of those who assail the parody as being too vulgar (that is, too accurate). But of course, CNN is all too happy to weasel out of its own culpability by taking the most scathing statement broached by the satirists--the indictment of the industry itself--and turning the blame predictably on the artists. And just as predictably, corporate media goons don't even pretend to distinguish between those producing the parody and those responsible for its subject. Posted by: Michelle at September 3, 2007 3:15 AM Right Belve, CNN was conflating 2 different questions: (1) Was this a valid and substantive expression of satire, and (2) is 3PM the appropriate time to air it.. Very well said, Eric and Michelle.. I might have to make a video about this. Posted by: Jay Smooth at September 3, 2007 4:06 AM Uncle THOMMY? wow. Posted by: nshgrl at September 3, 2007 4:47 AM the women in that cartoon actually turns me on. i think some of these older people are intellectually dishonest, they likely get the satire, but its not going to sync up with their agenda etc to admit it. I think Bill O reilly suffers from that same disease. Posted by: Eat My Shorts at September 3, 2007 9:35 AM It's time to call BET the station that was. A boycott is in order against all of its sponsors. Take that trashy station off the air. Any station that would show "Read a Book" needs to be banished from the public airwave. There is absolutely no excuse for airing that mindless filth. Also let's boycott any future products of the artistic idiots who created the garbage. Posted by: tee at September 4, 2007 10:20 PM This video was absolutely awesome. Only a black individual with a brain would understand it. However, I believe it sends a strong message to the community. If the video stated all of the things that it did in a much less offensive way it would be ignored and BET would have never played. It has a bit of attraction to it with all the slang and urban ghetto jargon attached. More money wasting non reading young black men and boys have probably seen this video than bought the last positive gospel rap album. It's an avenue to reach the young black. This video sends a message to stop wasting time, money and your life and to do something positive with it. It even gives suggestions. Read a Book, brush your teeth, take care of your children, stop wasting money, buy something to show with your money. There aren't too many things out there that give this message that actually receive air play. Posted by: Jak Stone at September 13, 2007 1:21 AM WHO CARES WHO SEES THIS VIDEO! If you are watching 106 & Park you have already seen these images. To take issue with this video is to take issue with the videos and current programming that is already on BET. Parents cannot have it both ways. My children are not permitted to watch music videos because I do not agree with the misogynistic and negative imagary that permeates Hip Hop music today. Posted by: Rachel May at September 19, 2007 4:54 PM I think this as one of the stupidest discussions I've ever heard of. First off, the people who created it have nothing to do with when it's played. Theres half naked women in all the videos on B.E.T degrading women and talking about the ice in their grills and the rims on their cars, and they choose to single out this song? adults watch cartoons too (family guy) and I think it would've been a hell of alot more offensive if there were humans in this video! there are so many other things going on in the world, why are we wasting our time on this. Your children may have outside influences that may sometimes be negative, but in the end its the morals you as a parent instill in them..that determines the outcome!!! Posted by: Kyle at September 25, 2007 12:39 PM My one question is... Is Rev. Al Sharpton going to get involved in this? I am willing to bet, that if a group of white people did this, or it was on a different network other than BET, he would be. So where is he now? Posted by: Jason C. at October 15, 2007 10:01 AM |
