October 29, 2007Why Albums Used To Matter![]() or why jay-z should be learning from radiohead Comments
Albums used to matter because it was about artistry. About music. Now its about how quickly you can record a verse, and trying to appeal to radio. Rappers are actually bragging about doing songs in 10min. Imagine Picasso sitting around like, "Yo dog, I painted this shit in 10min." LOL. It's ridiculous. My favorite rapper's name is Anthony J. Shears. He's what Hova used to be. Anthony J. Shears - The Growth: My ENDtroduction comes out Nov. 6th. The next big thing in hip hop people! WORD UP! HONEST MUSIC, and REAL ARTISTRY IS MAKING A COME BACK. With Kanye and Common both debuting at #1, Khaled you were wrong. We're talking over! Posted by: Alex Butterfield at October 29, 2007 6:27 PM I hear ya, man. The funny thing about it is that mentality perpetuates the idea of disposable music that these same so-called artists fear, because it runs counter to their bottom line. If a song doesn't represent your blood, sweat, and tears, and is just a spontaneous regurgitation of previously devoured concepts, spit, swallowed, and re-spit like some type of chud, how can you expect the consumer to value it highly, such that they *shouldn't* think that they're entitled to it for free? By fostering the notion that there's no difference between the freestyle and the song, rappers who espouse this idea tell fans, who expect a little bit for nothing, that EVERYTHING, in terms of artistic effort, is a "little thing," and thus, not worth the paper it's printed on...if it's printed at all. I for one feel like a dinosaur -- someone who, despite having an iPod, traffics in albums, rather than mere songs. The album is a whole greater than the sum of its parts, more than a mixtape, just like a movie is more than a collection of scenes. Comparing albums of today to those of yesterday is like comparing the disjointed scenes of the "Super 4-hour" Porn tapes to the pornography of the 70's and 80's, which tried to employ acting and plotlines, and aspired to be "art." Just as the notion of the least common denominator dissolved the distinction between the essentialism of the audience, and the imagination of the artist, so too has hip-hop suffered the same fate. We're in the days of "Amateur Hour," where everyone calls themselves artists, because the art has been taken over by hacks, who do what we all can do. There's no honor in that, and as such, the profession of "artist" is less honorable. It's sad, really... Posted by: Just Mike at October 29, 2007 9:39 PM I cain't believe you got the mahavishnu orchestra up there! You disrepected the shit out me.
