January 4, 2008Barack Obama and White VotersSome thoughts on whether Barack Obama will find some white voters disappearing due to "Tolerance Fatigue" aka "The Bradley Effect." Obama's win in the (very white) Iowa caucus seems like a good sign, but I don't think we should get too happy just yet. Posted by jsmooth995 at January 4, 2008 10:49 PMComments
People tell pollsters all sorts of crazy shit all the time. Remember Howard Dean was ahead in nearly every poll in Iowa in 2004. And remember the "Dean Scream" that may have had some impact in some of the later primaries/caucuses post-dated Dean's third or fourth place standing in the Iowa results. That said, I hope you're mistaken about the Tolerance Fatigue effect. Although I suspect you may be right that there may be a drift in the coming weeks. His father, who was black, abandoned him and his mother when he was about two years old. He lived with his white mother and white grandparents." why does he deny his white stripes? if his birth mother is white, how can he be called an african-american? if he became america's president then he would become america's first bi-racial president, not america's first african-american president. if barack were to say to the american people that he is neither black nor white, but simply,an american, then i and countless others would vote for him into office as americas 'forty fourth president.' Posted by: trashsurfr at January 6, 2008 4:59 AM I am also "half white" and I self-identify both as Black and as mixed, the two are not mutually exclusive. Identifying as Black does not mean denying any diversity in your bloodstream.. just think of how many people who ID as Black will be eager to tell you about their Native American roots. Obama is not denying his white ancestry at all. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 6, 2008 5:36 PM trashsurfr - You comment makes no sense. What difference does race play in who you vote for? He has to declare himself neither black nor white to get your vote? What about what he stands for? Posted by: Pharoah at January 7, 2008 1:53 AM Barack Obama is African American because his father was African America. Other happen to choose to call theirselves bi-racial but really medicine goes by the father if he is present at birth. So technically he is African- American. Posted by: Faith at January 15, 2008 1:59 PM Why does it matter about his race anyway??? Posted by: Faith at January 15, 2008 2:00 PM Why does it matter about his race anyway??? Posted by: Faith at January 15, 2008 2:01 PM Why does it matter about his race anyway??? Posted by: Faith at January 15, 2008 2:01 PM During the highest periods of racism in the south, if you had any black in you dispite having a white parent you were considered black. I think that he embraces both and was probably excepted by african americans more than whites when he was young. My children are mixed with white and have attended schools that are mostly white and some that are mostly black. It amazes me how black kids treat them as something strange and ask them what are they mixed with, and the white children just play with them and never ask at all. It doesn't matter what race he is anyway. Posted by: S at January 24, 2008 6:48 AM Barack Obama is half white and half black, but if he calls him bi-racial, he would not receive this kind of support from the African American group, which he needs to win the election. As you all know that he is the eight cousin of Dick Cheney, Vice President and 11th cousin of George Bush. Hw is HALF WHITE, there is no doubt about it. Posted by: Shamima at March 5, 2008 9:34 PM trashsurfr, Obama calls himself black because he has black in him. According to the one pint rule, once you have black in you you are black. It doesn't matter whether or not he's half black, quater, one eighth black etc, once he has that "black blood" he is thought of as black....not white. In any event, you should not be voting for someone based on their race. It should be the person who brings forth all the qualities you would want to see in office.
