Rev. Wright National Press Club Speech Video

There used to be a time when the media would at least try to adhere to an ideal of getting to the "bottom" of a story the "truth", for the public good. The sad truth of the matter is that our media of today shamelessly spin the news in a sick, self-serving, sensational, fear driven, hidden agenda, designed to play on the emotions, and fears of the public for the sake of ratings rather than informing, and educating.

Thank God for a Rev. Wright

I never knew all these about Rev. Wright before now. His speeches are very remarkable and he's not only intelligent but full of wisdom. He's trying to throw a big light into Christianity and Humanity and i cannot call or assume he's divisive in that manner.
Nowadays, we're solely dependable on information and his comments are very informative. We should also accept the fact that he's not the predecessor of these information but just a conveyor. If we all cannot face up to the bitter truth now, then when?

What is this deal with Juan Williams making such an off shot comment at the end? I think Rev Wright was simply saying "get off my back and let me do the black preaching like the way it has been done for years." Rev Wright was right about the "white media" deliberate mistakes of trying to kill 2 black birds with one stone.

Obviously Juan Williams must have been analysing a different speech. To conclude that the Rev's speech had nothing to do with the past remarks either means that he (Williams) was either not listening or did not understand, because the very core of the speech draws on the tradition and context of the remarks he was vilified for. Williams also revers to the Rev as a kid in a school yard for the Rev's responses to the questions, again Williams gets the whole picture wrong - Williams may have thought the questions serious, but the Rev wont honour them with serious answers because they do not deserve it in the fisrt place. And that last comment Williams makes about a double faced Barack? What a bunch of nonesense! A political analyst? Williams "mis-analyzed" this one.

Williams remind me of what Mr wright was saying about the slave rules were two black had to be monitored and could not have an opinion with out Uncle Tom (Williams) telling us what we were suppose to take from what was so clear to my ear. Rev Wright was very clear in answering his critics and u have to be inspired with the vigor in which he defended not only him self but all in the human race not just blacks.

Yes, I believe that Juan was off the mark. However, Juan is part of the "media" (Fox News) that Wright was talking about. If I, too, were a weak person I would be defensive by dismissing wright's remarks. I hope I wouldn't be as petty as that, but life is hard and forgiveness is best.

Thank you for posting Rev. Wright's NAACP speech. I am sorry the Barack Obama has repudiated Rev. Wright -- though, unfortunately politics will out.

More to the point, I am deeply, deeply angry that this conversation is *STILL* going on. Racism is a cancer on the soul of America and it must stop. As a Caucasian New Yorker, I applaud Rev. Wright's courage in demanding an honest evaluation of how African-Americans are treated in this country. And just look at what has happened here! Sean Bell was shot 50 times ... 50 TIMES. Can you imagine the uproar if he had been a white male on the eve of his wedding day?

Their questions did not evidence any interest in uncovering facts or coming to a comprehension of any situation except possibly how they could continue to Sensationalize FOR their own material Gain and Fame any word or phrase which this Minister might utter.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright stood there, face to face with EVIL. He did not back down. In the very "belly of the Beast" he stood tall and spoke Truth to Power. If he failed in any respect, it was in mistaking the attacks as attacks ONLY upon the Black Church tradition. These attacks are upon ALL CHURCHES and ALL FAITHS! GOD Bless and Keep the Rev. Wright!

Rev. Wright is one who Speaks Truth to Power. That is, in the tradition of the greatest of our freedom fighters, preachers, teachers, artists, and public activists, he employs his experience, brilliance and courage to challenge the oppressors.

As a man of God, he defies the oppressors; he sides with the ordinary folk rather than with the powerful; he seeks to bring understanding to all rather than to continue our feel-good miseducation. His effort is to create a better world by engaging the serious problems and joining all into a healthier society. He works for liberation from ignorance, hatred and violence. And, yes, he often takes off the soft gloves in doing so.

Men and women like Rev. Wright are almost always despised by those who are unable to accept the Truth. Jesus and Mohammed were both treated with disbelief and scorn during their times. In our own times we have the examples of the heroes Ghandi, Paul Robeson, Malcolm X, MLK Jr., and Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael). All were/are hated by many (especially, by white Americans)who either are unaware of their work or cannot understand or tolerate anyone Speaking Truth to Power.

Those persons who feel that Rev. Wright "spews hatred and bigotry" are, if serious, caught up in our national failure to recognize the crisis we face. The United States of America has devolved into a corruption of human worth and social principles so deep that (per the sage George Orwell) to tell Truth is itself a most revolutionary act. Some folk--like the sorry apologist, Juan Williams-- just can't handle it.

Turn off the mainstream media, and get alternative sources of information. Use the Internet and community radio. Organize!

I applaude the pastor Wright. He really seems to be a good, peaceful, and law abiding man. I cannot understand why people have called his remarks offensive. Especially the blacks. It seems as though the Black community has really gone back by fifty years. Yes I agree with Melmanjora, that people of colour who speak out on the truth are always despised.
I cannot believe that Barack Obama said some of the things that he did about his pastor. What if he does not win the Presidency? Is losing a friend of 20 years really worth all of this?
I understand now why Religion and Politics should never mix. I live in Canada now, and we do not have these political problems. People here vote based on the issues. Trust me, it is less confusion.

Africans were still in the endogenous phase of their evolution (living in huts and tribes) and some still are TODAY!

Europeans were at least 700 yrs ahead of Africans at that time intellectually.

When you study something through one particular lense, black theology, you have to understand that there will be distortions. He is a smart man, but he doesn't have a complete picture nor is he living in the present. This happens to people who know too much; they forget what is real now and what was real 100 years ago or in 1600. This lense also leads to some major racism, which is not excusable in anyone.

I can't see any glaring reason to be offended by Rev. Wright or anything he has said, not in the full versions of the Youtube clips, Bill Moyers, NAACP, or National Press Club speechs. I am not religious but would attend his church sermons if I was treated to the political commentary of liberation and enlightenment that I hear him speak. The real insult is from the press and his detractors that continue to bully, and smear him.

As an African-American, I am outraged that the Reverenator would not only put his own selfish agenda ahead of Barack's, he said that the attack was not on him but the black church. He is dead wrong. The attack was on BARACK...and he let the media use HIM as ammunition! If Reverend Wright didn't know that he would be a MAJOR distraction for Barack's campaign, then he is as IGNORANT as he is SELFISH!

I feel so sad for Barack. His willingness to pay a political price for not denouncing his pastor last month was a just a waste. Reverend Wright wouldn't even consider doing the same for Barack. He could've kept his mouth shut or AT LEAST behaved himself in a way that truly represents the body of Christ.

Many of you have asked for some rational explanation for Wright's transition from reasonable conversation to shocking anger at the National Press Club. A psychologist might pull back some of the layers and see this complicated man more clearly, but I'm not a psychologist. Many black preachers I've known — scholarly, smart, and gentle in person — uncorked fire and brimstone in the pulpit. Of course I've known many white preachers like that, too.

But where I grew up in the south, before the civil rights movement, the pulpit was a safe place for black men to express anger for which they would have been punished anywhere else; a safe place for the fierce thunder of dignity denied, justice delayed. I think I would have been angry if my ancestors had been transported thousands of miles in the hellish hole of a slave ship, then sold at auction, humiliated, whipped, and lynched. Or if my great-great grandfather had been but three-fifths of a person in a constitution that proclaimed, "We the people." Or if my own parents had been subjected to the racial vitriol of Jim Crow, Strom Thurmond, Bull Connor, and Jesse Helms. Even so, the anger of black preachers I've known and heard about and reported on was, for them, very personal and cathartic.

That's not how Jeremiah Wright came across in those sound bites or in his defiant performances this week. What white America is hearing in his most inflammatory words is an attack on the America they cherish and that many of their sons have died for in battle ? forgetting that black Americans have fought and bled beside them, and that Wright himself has a record of honored service in the Navy. Hardly anyone took the "chickens come home to roost" remark to convey the message that intervention in the political battles of other nations is sure to bring retaliation in some form, which is not to justify the particular savagery of 9/11 but to understand that actions have consequences. My friend Bernard Weisberger, the historian, says, yes, people are understandably seething with indignation over Wright's absurd charge that the United States deliberately brought an HIV epidemic into being. But it is a fact, he says, that within living memory the U.S. Public Health Service conducted a study that deliberately deceived black men with syphilis into believing that they were being treated, while actually letting them die for the sake of a scientific test. Does this excuse Wright's anger? His exaggerations or distortions? You'll have to decide or yourself. At least it helps me to understand the why of them.

But in this multimedia age the pulpit isn't only available on Sunday mornings. There's round the clock media — the beast whose hunger is never satisfied, especially for the fast food with emotional content. So the preacher starts with rational discussion and after much prodding throws more and more gasoline on the fire that will eventually consume everything it touches. He had help — people who for their own reasons set out to conflate the man in the pulpit who wasn't running for president with the man in the pew who was.

Behold the double standard: John McCain sought out the endorsement of John Hagee, the war-mongering Catholic-bashing Texas preacher who said the people of New Orleans got what they deserved for their sins. But no one suggests McCain shares Hagee's delusions, or thinks AIDS is God's punishment for homosexuality. Pat Robertson called for the assassination of a foreign head of state and asked God to remove Supreme Court justices, yet he remains a force in the Republican religious right. After 9/11 Jerry Falwell said the attack was God's judgment on America for having been driven out of our schools and the public square, but when McCain goes after the endorsement of the preacher he once condemned as an agent of intolerance, the press gives him a pass.

Jon Stewart recently played a tape from the Nixon White House in which Billy Graham talks in the oval office about how he has friends who are Jewish, but he knows in his heart that they are undermining America. This is crazy; this is wrong -- white preachers are given leeway in politics that others aren't.

Which means it is all about race, isn't it? Wright's offensive opinions and inflammatory appearances are judged differently. He doesn't fire a shot in anger, put a noose around anyone's neck, call for insurrection, or plant a bomb in a church with children in Sunday school. What he does is to speak his mind in a language and style that unsettle some people, and says some things so outlandish and ill-advised that he finally leaves Obama no choice but to end their friendship. We are often exposed us to the corroding acid of the politics of personal destruction, but I've never seen anything like this ? this wrenching break between pastor and parishioner before our very eyes. Both men no doubt will carry the grief to their graves. All the rest of us should hang our heads in shame for letting it come to this in America, where the gluttony of the non-stop media grinder consumes us all and prevents an honest conversation on race. It is the price we are paying for failing to heed the great historian Jacob Burckhardt, who said "beware the terrible simplifiers".

I can't decide whether to laugh or cry. So many ignorant folks here claiming to be superior yet the simple task of writing an intelligible, correctly-spelled and correctly-punctuated opinion is too great a task for you to master. Undergraduate college courses teach such subjects as differing styles of speech and persuasion, and why different cultures developed differently throughout time. Many of you confused folks should seek education on these matters in order to better understand the things that so enrage you. But first, take some writing courses.

Bill Moyers did another good show this week with a short comment in support of the Rev.Wright. He had support from Kathleen Hall Jamieson who has further information on Bill Moyers at pbs.org. I was so incensed on the rancour displayed in the MSM and these blogs that I wondered if there is a co-ordinated effort at mind control going on in the smearing of the Rev. Wright. Seems as if people need to reconcile themselves with their faith before any other reconciliation is possible. Reverend Wright can be incendiary when viewed through those loops he spoke of, but this wasn't particularly offensive, it was more explanatory than it had been. I personally don't agree with everything my spiritual advisor has to say, but I don't condemn the whole body of worship and the people because it annoys me.

I am just grateful for the entire speech being posted here for me to personally view rather than getting my information from the ever increasing talking heads, who aren't even aware of what they are discussing. I agree with the poster who suggested that research would be appropriate, there is so much than many of don't know and are not aware of. Ignorance makes for some of the most interesting arguments and always, the truth will set you FREE, but first it will PISS you off. That is true for both sides of any argument based on emotional reactions and a complete lack of compassion.

God has to wondering where the wrong started for his image to become so distorted. Sounds as if Jesus would be medicated and imprisoned in some mental institution if he were here now. Probably a good thing that people are ignorant of the cultural adaptations of Christianity, otherwise Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, African Methodist, Roman Catholics, Coptic, Anglican etc. would be at war with each other over what is said on their sabbath. Barack Obama is anything but an angry black man, as his life during the past 20+ years amply demonstrates. Rev. Wright is a very angry black man. Any African American knows that the variation in attitude and temperament evident between Wright and Obama is nothing unusual within the community. When these two men first met they argued.
Many folks who are not African American, on the other hand, will associate Obama with Wright because they do not perceive the vast variations that exist within a sub-culture other than their own. Therefore, for these observers, Wright's anger is transferred to Barack -- where it simply does not fit -- because both men are black, thus they must be alike.
This association of Obama with Wright should be seen for what it is: a complete farce rooted in insensitivity, prejudice and blindness. The fact that a friend of the Clintons arranged to have Wright appear as part of a Press Club special series, and appear on the day that he did, raises suspicions in my mind that the Clinton campaign had a hand in these arrangements, and perhaps in formulation of the questions posed to Wright by the non-press audience. It was his response to these questions that did the most harm and revealed his deep anger and hatred.
Some reporter ought to look into this -- it appears that there is a story to be told.
The way Barack has responded to this devastating harm to his efforts, and to him as a person, is truly remarkable. Barack Obama stands out as one in a million, maybe in 300 million, and we had better grab him while we can. L. J. O'Brien

I really don't understand how anyone could listen to this speech and not understand that Rev. Wright is not promoting racism as his reoccuring them is different not deficient. Racism will end one day but before we can change we have take into account the differences we all possess and respect those differences to equal one single voice of perfection. The Tower of Babel story if you read it correctly before God took it down and confounded the languages made me realize that if we all get on one accord there is nothing we can't do not even reach the heights of heaven itself. Regardless of who wins the candidacy before kingdoms must change people must change. People from all corners of the Earth live in this city, we are not Manhattan with it's up-scale attititudes, but there are no race riots, inter-cultural skirmishes or refusals to live with each other. We have faith based meetings, civic out-reach opportunities, schools and community functions. We get to know each other and all our cultural preferences. We have been able to live together, work together and welcome each new voice into the maintainence of who we are. This isn't something new, it's what we have always been...a little known secret of NYC. We don't forget our cultures, we celebrate them with businesses, parades, churches and a myriad of activities, open to everyone. There are Buddhists temples, Hindu Ashrams, Synagogues, RC Churches, Greek communities, Russian and Polish, Ukranian communities. South Americans, Central Americans, Mexican Americans, just everyone on the planet is here. The restaurants, the theatre, the landscaping of our homes says how diverse we are. It isn't wonderland, but the humanity is evident. The most problematic thing we have is being seen as not desirable because we aren't Manhattan. One can learn about most anyculture or ethnic background here and it becomes more than a daytrip. It's alive, vivid, robust and really amazing to see that not all of us are hate mongers, just decent, hard-working people who like living among others like us. There are wealthy, all types of middle-class, poor and break your heart very poor, it's the same in Manhattan, but we don't pretend they don't exist. All races,classes, tribes, cultures are here and we do well with this diversified crew of humans.

Many times I know it's our humanity or the embracing of those who desire it, that makes this a great place to live. Trees, parks, lawns, backyards...not cold cement but inviting flowers in the front yard, great ethnic landscaping, wonderful block parties and the variety of food is amazing. We aren't 4 star, but we are definetly cross-cultural.

Never thought that spirituality was ever going to be a picnic and would at some point, expose all my doughts, fears, secrets and nightmares. Everyone has their dark night of the soul sooner or later. The bigoted commentary from my people of color is troubling to see on the screen, now in this 21st century. The racist venom of the whites (who seem to be in a time warp of arrested development) is even more deplorable when I would assume, according to what many of the Billy-Bob pundits are saying, whites should have become more evolved, too. And should be better than that.

I am an American. I am not an African. My ethnic roots come from Africa but my family's experience has always been American. As an American I don't wish for another place to live where I am cut off from the rest of my country. I simply wish to not be harassed in living out my existence where I am.

There is no "white education" or "black education". There is only knowledge that is applicable to all, no matter what ethnicity they are. When people become educated they see the world through opened eyes and acknowledge possibilities. When people refuse to be educated, their ignorance tunnels their vision and they curse what they cannot fathom due to limiting themselves. Only children worry and brag about who has done more, or who has contributed what. All people have strengths and weaknesses but America's sum is greater than its parts. You should not look down on someone unless you are helping them to stand up, whatever color their skin is.

I do not believe in violence for the sake of violence and would not condone that. But, if anyone would try to do harm to me or my family for something we have no control over. Well, that unreasonableness would be met with force; whatever force would be necessary to make that threat recede. I am not telling anyone how they should think. But if your thoughts are meant to do harm to me because of my race, and you cross my path demonstrating outwardly such hate--I would defend myself. I have that right as an American.

Rev Wright speaks truth and takes it right out of the Bible. White America WAKE UP and realize your mistakes and apologize and repent for them. STOP trying to pretend that slavery did not exist or that because YOU per se did not own slaves that you should be 'let off the hook' Quit being punks about it and 'fess up' We (African Americans) are sick of your whining.
