May 14, 2008Obama Supporters: Don't Be SchmucksPartly inspired by this post. May return to that thought later. Posted by jsmooth995 at May 14, 2008 12:08 PMComments
Okay.. I've got the argument down that Obama is the "candidate for change" and I do wish I could believe that if he were to be elected that he wouldn't be able to turn his back to communities of color because he has experienced the impact of systemic racism in his everyday life... But I still think that even if Obama was the PERFECT candidate for President, we're still focusing on creating change in unsustainable ways. The movement that is happening as a result of people's dissatisfaction with the current Administration is the movement of the people mobilized to create change. That change does not come in a leader, because this will die when s/he is gone. Real, sustainable social movements come from the people in their own communities. We can't see Obama as the candidate for "change" - we need to see the people as the ones creating the change in the first place. I understand the desire to push Obama above Hillary in this race - he's obviously the more "liberal" candidate. BUT, Obama's election can't be the goal of a movement, especially when he is so "off" on countless issues (check out Z Magazine's article, "The Obama Illuision). Posted by: Charlene Obernauer at May 17, 2008 12:37 AM Then why save ourselves all the trouble and leave Bush in place and have no change at all. Or put Bill Clinton back in the White House with nothing to do. It's amazing how he shamed the office and the number of people that are willing to put him back where he doesn't ever belong again. Sounds like the real schmuck wrote a long, useless article. Posted by: kelly at May 20, 2008 2:11 AM Charlene Obernauer, when you ASSume that the election of Obama is the goal of the movement you make an ASS out of U and me..well actually just you (and believe me i'm going real easy on you). Communities of color don't need your little lessons on what the goal of the movement should be, but thank you for your concern.
