July 17, 2008"Obama Is My Slave" T-ShirtWhat's really sad about this sort of hipster racism isn't even the racism, it's the desperation of the pleas for attention.. all this shirt really says is "oh please oh please oh please, please be shocked by me!" In fact, are we sure this even happened? The only source verifying the alleged assault seems to be Braun himself. Posted by jsmooth995 at July 17, 2008 3:42 PM Comments
wow i don't even know where to begin that fact that she was wearing the shirt or that fact that she trying to get money for what happen to her for wearing the shirt. i wanna say she deserves what she gets but it's wrong, but at the same time i dunno what i woulda done if i saw someone with the shirt. An if this chick gets paid i'm gonna be really pissed! she should be happy thats the worst that happen honestly. it's Fcukin NY people get killed for less everyday why put a target on yourself. Ms. Dumbass! i dunno why but that die hard scene with bruce willis in harlem comes to mind Posted by: ThatGuy5th at July 17, 2008 5:03 PM I'd hope you would say it's inappropriate, rather than assaulting the woman, but that's naive of me. You should follow the link. You should follow the link. The guy who made the shirt's a giant bigo.t Posted by: Andrew W. at July 17, 2008 6:49 PM What is really sad is that this guy's commitment to free speech only extends up to his boutique door. I went in there to ask him if it was true about the incident at Union Square. He said yes. I asked him if he understood why someone would react that way. He says it doesn't matter because "this is America, do you understand me, this is America, this is America." I ask him if there is no responsibility attached to that and he gives me the same spiel. I then tell him I think his shirt is disgusting and he should be ashamed of himself. That's when he boots me out of his store. He points to the camera and says I need to watch myself, and that I should never show my face again in his store. I just say I'm not here to do anything but register my protest, and tell him that there's plenty of other people that are going to do the exact same thing. I didn't fight with him and, in fact, the conversation was rather civilized. But the fact is clear that his stated dedication to the first amendment does not include the inside of his shop. People need to run up on this guy all day. Walk in there, tell him his shirt is garbage, let him kick you out, get 5 friends to do the same. He has to know this is not about the first amendment, this is about respect. Posted by: Zach Pickens at July 17, 2008 8:05 PM And fashionindie.com has this to add: To speak with Nathanaeli Nassimi (the grad student) about the incident, you can reach her at phone number: [edited]. [phone numbers removed, I don't want to enable personal harassment -jsmooth995] Posted by: Zach Pickens at July 17, 2008 8:11 PM It did shock you. I support this guys right to say what he wants. It doesn't mean what he said is right by any means. But he has the right. You all have the right to comment about it here. Or stand outside his shop. We all have the right voice ourselves. Just because it isn't politcally correct or morally correct doesn't mean he can't say it. You can't get pissed at him for going for the shock factor either. "George Bush Hates Black People." it goes both ways. Posted by: Chris Raduel at July 17, 2008 10:00 PM Chris Raduel: Can you point out where I expressed shock, or questioned anyone's right to speak? Comparing this to the Kanye West statement (which you misquoted) makes no sense whatsoever. And the concept of "political correctness", as you seek to apply it here, is bankrupt and cowardly. People really need to stop throwing "political correctness" around so loosely, as if the basic concepts of self-respect and human decency were invented by the PC Police. Posted by: Jay Smooth at July 17, 2008 10:21 PM She got what she deserves. "Obama is my slave", get the hell out of here. But this dumb b**** reflects the thoughts of a lot of people out there who believe black people especially our men should in prison or not in positions of power. Posted by: Nyah Molineaux at July 18, 2008 1:19 AM Wait.. she paid $69 dollars for a friggin silkscreen t-shirt?? Ha Ha HA or chuckle chuckle. I am sorry she got pushed around, and its wrong to resort to violence to settle any type of conflict. That being said I can be honest and say I might not have pushed her around but I really can't say I would have tried hard to stop it. The Die Hard (the 3rd movie) reference is exactly right. Posted by: Belve at July 18, 2008 2:37 AM she gets what she deserves.......bigotry will no longer be tolerated in these times the world is to fragile for that so she got what was coming to her.....and i hope she getts laughed outta court Posted by: heinous at July 18, 2008 5:53 AM I believe that the shirt was incendiary, and as a result the creator and the wearer got what was coming to them. I also believe that reacting in such a way as to cause harm or to threaten the lives of such people only strengthens the argument for people who believe 'black people are animals/trash/unfit to run the white house' and a true measure of strength in character is to be sound enough in one's self where you can see such an anger-baiting tool, smile a bit, and keep on moving. Disappointment is in both the creator of the shirt for the obvious 'over-reaching' tactics meant to bait a reaction, and the obvious 'over-reaction' from our people who want so much to be seen as a proud and dignified race but can't look past a t-shirt to see the desperation of a people who can't understand why their influence over the world is balancing out to other races and cultures, losing sight of our own accomplishments in the process. Posted by: CSRealist at July 18, 2008 12:09 PM Essentially, we give power to what we choose to give power and I'd be ashamed in my people who give so much power over something so insignificant, that being either a t-shirt or a small minded person/people. I don't hate Obama because he is black, I hate him because is a narcissistic phony, and naive egomaniac / marxist who will raise our taxes and most likely get us killed because of allowing situations to occur that will put this country in grave danger. And I don't hate liberals because they are 'black' or 'gay' or whatveer...I hate them because they live in airtight subjective boxes that do not allow them to see the world as it truly is. The double-standard that liberals perpetuate is extremely frustrating not only in its effects but in liberals' complete inability to even see that there is a double-standard nor that it could possibly be dangerous. Posted by: ShaefromHouston at July 21, 2008 1:30 PM "S.F.H." :Well, if you're a fan of Jay Smooth, then you'd remember the bit when he said the "street" rules don't translate into the "corporate" rules. Being versatile doesn't mean forfeiting your self-respect to harm another, possibly harming yourself more so (you knock him out, he get's his attorney's and you're put away for years...your voice doesn't matter at that point.) People with real authority, power, etc...don't play in the streets. And what maintains their power is their acumen for not allowing insignificant issues affect, detract, or distract from the bigger goal, allowing those insignificant issues to fall by the wayside, and at the same time diminishing the importance of who brought about their existence/importance. "em": (Young? Heh..)Why are those days gone? When I say those with real strength don't pay the small shit any mind, it's because they're busy dealing with the bigger picture. You sacrifice ground covered in the way of building respect towards the black community by caving into the same small-minded, cowardly tendencies that invoked a reaction in the first place. Why care? Because building respect opens doors for more opportunities for our people, and quiets the rhetoric that seeks to diminish our worth. Not reacting to these types of incendiary tools/techniques isn't the same as doing nothing. Again, taking the energy you would use to bash the fucker's face in could be used to take money out the guy's pocket. If you don't contribute to the "blacks are ignorant, monkey-ass savages unfit to do shit outside of killing each other" conversation, then eventually there won't be any source for them to pull from. No source to pull from, the weaker and more pathetic his tactics seem. Next thing you know, he'll be applying for a job at a black owned business to make ends meet. Speak out if you must, which is absolutely the thing to do. But also keep in mind that acting on your (I use 'your' to mean 'we as a people') anger and fears only sinks us deeper. Of course, this is all "if we lived in a perfect (read Walgreen's) world" stuff. Of course people are going to continue to act as they wish. Of course we'll have the results of poor decisions cast loosely upon the African American community as a whole. Of course we'll be looking for people to blame for that (except for ourselves...'cause that's just silly...). The cycle continues. Posted by: CSRealist at July 21, 2008 4:04 PM Ahhhh. Good old hipster dipshittery, supposedly rooted in the DIY punk ethos, where a very non-DIY punk pricetag is attached to hackery and subsequently defe3nded as "ironic." Damn do I hate this social scene for killing creativity in parts of NYC. Just a bunch of uninspired spoilt kids begging for attention. Nothing is more pathetic than someone who would fabricate a stoy involving both racial and political tensions to sell a crappy t-shirt. If you haven't seen it and want a good laugh at all the douchebaggery that involves this particular sucker selling the shirt, snag a peak at the UK TV series "Nathan Barley." It really is kind of a biting "Chicken Soup for the Soul" if you happen to deal with this obnoxious entertainment scene posing as a culture at any time. A brutally blunt and hilarious satire poking fun at these types of lame spoilt media whores, the so-called "subversive" mags like Vice which have become parodies of themselves, etc. It just nails it perfectly. Posted by: Eris23 at July 21, 2008 8:26 PM BTW, this is completely manufactured, just in case you guys don't know. Interestingly, staffers at Metro apparently get fired when they fuck up, unlike staffers at some other, more prestigious, NYC newspapers. Posted by: DJA at July 22, 2008 1:40 AM Damn, it's nuts how this "fabricated story" raised some really interesting points. From the posts I've read! It sounds like something to be mediated. But, the noise all stopped. Incredible. What's more interesting, how we are quick to label. Especially the hipster attention seeker....LMAO. I'm a Willie B native and would've probably been the first to make that judgement call (only noting how wrong it would have been after reflecting on it.) Well unfortunately it's a dead post. Should have read it sooner. Posted by: P3Z at July 27, 2008 3:09 AM America built on Christianity?!?! WHAT?? Does anyone read history books anymore? You have to be kidding me! Christianity would not lead people who take land for other and said they "found it" and enslave people in chattel slavery, making them less than human. Freedom of speech comes with a price people, just because we have it doesn't mean that you can and should say anything you need to say. Further more, anyone who thinks its ok and it fine for that type of shirt to be worn, take your butt to the black part of town and wear that shirt if you are so big and bold, i dare you! America doesn't stand on any of the principles it preaches, Americans say a black man is running for president because he is black, I NEVER HEAR IT SAID THAT A WHITE MAN GETS THE PRESIDENCY BECAUSE HE IS WHITE! Are you really serious?!? Please wake up and see the obvious! OBAMA ROCKS! People are afraid of what they don't know and only want to discredit him (a Harvard graduate?) and act as if someone is actually giving him anything. He worked his butt off to get where he is, he wasn't given anything unlike all these other people in congress who are all related and ancestors were given their opportunities because of a privilege more than anything else...people are still ignorant and still dealing with european copability if you ask me! Posted by: Patricia Holt at August 6, 2008 11:58 PM well, the dumb bitch deserved it. One, she should have known better than to wear that shirt! Two, she gonna wear it in NY out of all places...Three, she was a "graduate". graduate from where? Stupidity Univerisity? Four, who ever designed that shirt should have gotten their ass beat too (and others supporting such arrogant slogans like that).
