There is a good point made that Korea is a homogeneous country so anyone looking or sounding different stands out and is an object of curiosity. There are class issues too. I am the first to point out problems with racism and classism in Korea, but think of how weird it would be to grow up in a country arbitrarily divided by Americans and then having an American military presence in place for as long as you've been alive (since the end of the war in 1953 which technically was never declared a war by Truman but rather "a police action" and again technically is still going on).
