This past Wednesday in Los Angeles, California, Najee Ali the Imam of Project Islamic H.O.P.E held a press conference to express his disatisfaction with the television show, Platinum. .. Ali says, "After viewing UPN hip-hop drama Platinum its apparent that the producers and writers have created a show based on focusing on the worst elements of hip-hop. Its gangsterism, violence, misogyny and brutality, Platinum's premiere episode highlights the violence and ignorance in hip-hop that has become synonymous with young people and black culture."

He goes on to say.."How many more lives will hip-hop lose before we all wake up and realize that these programs masquerading as entertainment, only perpetuate the glorification of negative behaviors and images in hip-hop. The hip-hop nation needs to realize that yes we need to keep it real. But the shows producers are attempting to mirror the worst in hip-hop in the premiere episode."

He spoke with allhiphop.com pointing out "not one character in the show does what they do, for the love of hip-hop culture. Every character has an angle rooted in personal gain. The elements of hip-hop (MC'ing, DJ'ing, B-boy'ing and Graf) have never even been mentioned yet!" He asks that future shows represent a balance of thought with characters along the lines of Chuck D, Talib Kweli, Nas, Mos Def, and Paris. "At this point the writers on Platinum must be on Bill O'Reilly's payroll," Ali said. "Because they are sabotaging the image of hip-hop. Hip-hop needs a show that could be more entertaining without the predictable, negative stereotypes we have seen so far."

In response Najee Ali has threatened a boycott of the show unless there is a meeting between the shows producers and his organization along with "a committee of hip-hop pioneers, rappers, producers, writers, DJs, and others who have lived in our culture." In the meeting they will discuss the direction that the show is going and where it should be headed in the future.

A UPN spokesman replied to Ali's criticism of the show: "Some of the executive producers, writers, directors and even stars come from the hip-hop world and know first-hand about this industry. It is their experience that they are retelling in Platinum. So, while we respect Mr. Ali's opinion, we believe our viewers who are fans of hip-hop music and fans of good television will very much enjoy this show." .. Of course, at the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is ratings.. Platinum beat out a re-run of ABC's legal drama The Practice and a repeat of the WB Network's drama Everwood in the same time slot.

The bizarre, freaky, Twilight Zonish thing about this is that the second episode of Platinum dealt with this exact situation. In that show, Sticky and Jason George drive up to to their label office and find a civil rights activist and a crowd of people holding up signs, boycotting Sweetback records, calling them the evil ones.. the scourge of the community and demanding that they change their ways. The problem was resolved after a meeting and a $10,000.00 check was slid across the table.

In no way am I implying that Najee Ali is looking for money.. I don't know what he wants. I do know that the show is called Platinum .. not Backspin. Your not gonna see dudes rocking headspins and windmills in the middle of the office. It's not even Def Poetry Jam.. there are outlets for all of the categories in hip-hop, one show will never cover all of the bases. In my eyes, the show is about one slice of the pie.. and it could have come off really, really bad. What was represented wasn't so over the top that boycotts and petitions are necessary. The shooting and other things were all handled in a respectable manner and there were some positive influences.. Jason George is married, his wife is a black female lawyer, there was no "yo yo yo .. sup homie" dialogue running rampant. Sticky's friend's ignorance isn't heralded, they provide comedic relief if anything, and the chick that Sticky slept with on top of the "million dollars" wasn't a hollow airhead; in her own way, she's out to change his doggy dog style. On and on.. I'm all for positivity and if this was a totally reckless show I'd ask where and when the march starts. The balance they're looking for is represented, it's just not smack in your face.. watch it again, Najee. I know you have it Tivo'd; there is no cause for alarm.

Platinum... I watched almost entire hour of the first episode... I must say plot line was too predicatable and acting was sub-par. I mean, the whole thing was too melodramatic. It was so lame because everything that was happening on the screen, I've already predicted it couple commercials ago. Not to mention, the show's not really about the music, it's about bunch of greedy morons looking to stab each others in a back to gain money and power. You know what, this show should be named "A&Rs", not "Platinum"...it's far from it. I personally don't even care about "exploitation" of hip hop and black community by this show, because it's too lame to even go there. It's sad when you watch one hour of television show and feels that you gained nothing out of it and wasted your time. I can see why this show is on UPN and I bet this show won't get passed 1 season... (but then again, people are stupid enough to listen to Nelly and Ja Rule... I may be in for a surprise)
