April 24, 2003Rising Stars of Korean Hip-HopA profile in The Korea Herald of their nation's top emcees, Drunken Tiger. I've heard these guys and they are actually decent, maybe I will put up an MP3 later. I'd say this article overplays the discrimination angle somewhat. Tigers roar, who's listening?Posted by jsmooth995 at April 24, 2003 11:18 AM Comments
I have to disagree about "article overplays the discrimination angle somewhat". I am Japanese and lived in the States for last 20 years. I've started to listening to hip hop music around mid 80's when breakdancing was popular. Then I picked up DJing around '95. I did many shows and parties before and one thing I've noticed is that because of my race and appearance, nobody gives me any props when I show up at the gig. Many of times people questioned my credibility because I am and I look like Asian and I don't necessary dress and act like sterotypical "Hip Hopper". I usually end up getting props from people at the end of the show after they realize that I do know hip hop. Posted by: DJ Musasahi at April 24, 2003 12:48 PM Oh I'm definitely not saying he overestimates the amount of discrimination Asians face in America as a whole, or even in hip-hop, in a more general sense. But as it relates to this particular situation, the article gives the impression that Drunken Tiger and other asian rappers are facing a gross injustice much like the negro league baseball players, that the Best Of the Best are being systematically excluded because of their race. I don't think that's quite the dynamic here. I think if the Korean rap scene actually did have that Jackie Robinson or Satchel Paige, if they put forth somebody who really was the best of the best, it wouldn't take too long for them to break through and be accepted at least somewhat. Just look at the DJ/Turntablist scene, so many of the most respected names are asian. But there has yet to be an asian emcee who can flow like Q-Bert can cut. I think it's basically like you said in your last paragraph, there is so much out there already that you have to come really strong to break through and capture people's attention. There are asian emcees who are decent (Jin, Mountain Brothers, etc.) but there hasn't been one who has that something special yet, like Eminem has. Don't get me wrong though, prejudices will always be a factor, but I don't think it's as cut and dried as this article portrayed it. Hey I really appreciate all your comments here, Musashi. Posted by: jay smooth at April 24, 2003 05:04 PM Hey Jay, I should be thanking you for having a place to read and discuss some of the things that are not being portrayed by major(mainstream) news sources. I found this site by luck but I appreciate this site very much for which that I am able to discuss and find out what others are feeling about some of the things that are happening around the world (major run-on sentence). It is also uplifting for me to see that there are many people like you that are promoting Hip Hop in positive manner. I used to not like internet too much as to Hip Hop scene because there were too many people spreading hate and negativity anonymously. But recently I have been finding many Hip Hop sites with intelligence and people having structured forum where discussions are polite and intelligent. So sites like yours gives me a hope that current Hip Hop scene is not about those peoeple that I dislike for what they do and what they represent. Jay, thanks again and I hope that you keep up your excellent site and keep on recruiting more people to enjoy this site. We may never see 80's or early 90's scene again, but we can still bring back that good 'ol boom bap and make Hip Hop better. I remember an interview on Marc 7 of J5. He said instead of complaining about what's out there (music), they decided to change things by putting out what they like. I feel the same way. I'm a DJ and my mission is to find the music that I love and share them with rest of the world. Thanks & Peace out, DJ Musashi Posted by: DJ Musashi at April 24, 2003 06:00 PM there is a large amount of asian discrimination in the US. ive noticed that stereotyping is the main thing that people of other races choose to pick on asians with. every time i see a full asian kid in the halls at my school, i hear "hey chinese kid!"or "ching ching chong ching"and more stuff like that. that pisses me of like what! they dont say that to me tho becuz im half black. instead, they call me names like "zebra" or "juvenile" (u kno, the black and white outsides) i really dont think asian hiphop artists will make it big in the US. i kno for a fact that the majority of the fans of azn hiphop are of course, asian. and since the war and stuff, people have more hatred towards asians. so if u really think about it, asians will never make it big with hiphop in the US. but that doesnt matter, becuz the US is only ONE country. theres like over 50 countries azns can be successful in, in asia. so who gives a darn about this stupid stereotyping racist country?! NOT ME!! i really do hope to make it big wit my freestyles when i get older but we kno it aint gonna happen. i perform at school talent shows and stuff liek that, but my so called friends shout out names like "zebra" and tell me it should be my nickname and stuff liek that . that pisses me off real bad. i got in over 6 fights this year with black white and hispanic people over racial issues, and of course, who is the teacher gonna blame? the asian kid of course! so as u can see, im sittin at home, suspended for 10 days, and grounded for a month. i truly do have a great life, dont i? Posted by: AznFreestylist at May 3, 2003 11:11 AM Korean hip hop's are making a move these days. Myself, I'm totally into asian hip hop music even no matter what. Dun know what are they saying but itz all good. I met some of Korean hip hop headz in Australia and of course in Korea. DJ JUN from Australia. Hez got a mad skill dat aisanz can collbrate with dude from outside of korea. Heard, his latest relased CD called "DJ JUN- ALCHEMY" (Only avaliable in AUS, I guess). It was mad collbrate with AUS n Korea connection. I recommand ya to check him out www.battletown.com.au Also other hands Master Plan from korea. Itz a exclusive underground hip hop label in korea.. datz what i heard. They got a tight productions... Artist featuring Joosuc, dj soulscape, defconn, etc... well, datz about it now. Respect to all bboyz, djz, mcz& tagger all around word! Peace! Posted by: kezrahi at June 25, 2003 12:04 PM suck my pussy korean rappers suck! trying hard copy cats Posted by: ur bitch at June 28, 2003 01:19 PM to ur bitch, Don't hate cuz u aint got mad skillz like they do. u look stupid cuz ur jealous~ as for the topic, i don't believe asain rappers will rise in US anytime soon, simply because "hip-hop" is culture and just think about how many asians reside in this country? some people has interest in other cultures music but not most. and i know not all asain rappers are copy cats, some are very unique in their own wayz. some people need to believe that just because "hip-hop" originally came from america that doesnt mean people should only listen to rap music in english, for americans it sound funny when they listens to rap musics from other countries, so most likey they won't listen to it. but in my opinion if you're true "hip-hop" fan, you shouldn't be discriminate. i'm also into trance music and some of musics i listen to isn't in english or korean but i enjoy it because it has it's own flavor to it. music isn't all about racism or stereotypes, music is global entertainment that will inspire people in every other ways. so let's cut the bull shit about down with asian rappers, who knows you'll see them on mtv one day? music is changing in there own creative ways and so does singers, rappers, composers~ oh and rap music originally come from african slavery singing their heart out about hard work and labor in plantation from america society to ease the pain. so for some ignorant americans out there hates foreign rap song need to know who create it. thank africans for creating this such beauty~ i know this is off topics but i just wanted y'all to know.
Posted by: Wang at June 30, 2003 04:13 AM I've been down with the hip-hop culture Since i can remember breathing. When i was a boy i remember being into the death row gangsta rap and the G-Funk of warren G. As I got older i began to get more cultured into the actual hip-hop and less gangsta. But honestly nowadays Hip-hop is almost as bad as that Gangsta rap i can't stand now. probably cause i've found theres more to life than cars, jewelry, woman, and money, but unfortunatly the rest of the world wants that. but i find Korean rappers a tad bit more enlighten when the lyrics are translated. they talk a bit more about themselves, thoughts and feelings more then the "bling bling" I mesan some of the stuff that there coming out with in music in general is juat plan retarted not just hip-hop but everything. personally theres only a few rappers i listen to that are big in the states and I don't know anybody on the damn radio cause I always listen to my korean cd's. I'm down with Em, Nas, Meth and Wu-tang. there a few others but for the most part my favorite rappers consist of The Ambassador, Cross Movment, Kj-52, Urban Disciple, Drunken Tiger, CB Mass, Yang Don Guen, and the Glossalalics. If You don't know who these cats are thats cause the first 4 are Christian Rappers who got mad, mad Skillz, and the last 4 are the dopest of the Korean Hip-hop Scene. If Your a true Hip-Hop You wont neglect any of these MC's and crews. I just Say Hip-Hop needs some Meaning. all it is now is a bunch of twisted jokes of so called rappers who thank God for there fame and fortune that they got for selling satan to the whole free world. I hope Korean Mc's make it out here. i just hope that if they do they don't conform to this mainstreams view on what hip-hop is and stay the way thet are now. Posted by: Kaze at July 4, 2003 08:54 AM from the black community to the asiatik bro's & sistas in hiphop.... I apologize for the segragation in hiphop music & creativity. But you hafta understand that just beacuse Blacks created hiphop, dosen't mean were making the bogus choices in the "mainstream industry" today. See theirs a secreted society in the black music industries today, which is to stay underground. As a result, every time eminem or the brittny spears, or the backstreet boys steal our styles, beats, & darrens dance moves, we come up with newer & catchier styles. Other words?, setting trends thats hip. It goes back to our african ancestory along the west coast with those hard to follow drum beats & trensetting rhymes. So we as the black community have nonthin agianst the asian community at all. It's all about dat fast pace in this crule world. Hell it's so bad amongs black americans that we don't even acknowledge our blacks in canada & over seas, " like the Black French hip hop scene ". I hope some day we can come together & make an album with blacks & asians stars together. peace...... Posted by: Physco at July 5, 2003 01:49 AM THIS IS PHYSCO!!!! please don't be a stranger. So if you are curious to hear what a asian cat in a ill up and coming New York hip hop group is up to check them out. Posted by: poon at July 6, 2003 03:38 PM Drunken Tiger...I heard Drunken Tiger's new release and the beat's are tight. I can't deny that they sound pretty damn good. But at the same time I don't understand any Korean. Just like international people listening to american hip-hop...they can feel the beat, but they don't understand the song. Now international countries can feel what stuggles and understand the fun meaning of their hip hop. But for americans to listen to Korean Hip hop or any type of international hip hop, it will take a while I think. Canadian rappers aren't even getting their respect due in America and some are tight! But just like the NBA, America will always be #1, but at the same time, their will international hip hop heads who actually respect the culture and will be not just knockin on doors but kickin it down because their respect is due. Kudos to Drunken Tiger's third album. They are actually blowin up. More in K-Towns than anywhere else...but good hip hop isn't just on the billboard...peace Posted by: mallymal at July 8, 2003 01:26 PM There is a dope Korean DJ I recently saw spin. DJ MOE CHOI. I didn't know what to expect, I just went cause I saw DJ MOE "CHOI" on a flyer. Thinking he must be Korean plus I had nothing else to do that night. There isn't any good Korean Hip-Hop DJs here in ATL. or any good DJs for that matter. Most stick to that top 40 formula. I'm so glad I went. He really played an amazing set. Not even on that "turntablist" stuff. (Which I find very borning, DJs Doing battle routines gets a little tiring) Really unique and dope new style. This kid "mixed" The Cure's "Close to me" (Brought back so many memories) with a ill hip-hop instrumental to a portishead song to gangstarr to del the funkee.... to Sade. really liked his stuff and selections. The crowd at club went nuts when he dropped Mantronix-"Bassline" track. I'm sure most didn't know who Mantronix is due to the age majority but I was speacially screaming and jumping up and down for that song. I went by the decks to see if he was really mixing cause alot of DJs here play those already mixed cds and just stand in the DJ Booth. But sure enough he was playing records and even 45s. He had a dubplate "No Love" a downtempo dubbed out song. Which everyone in the club moved to. Another dubplate he played which happened to be his last record was a snippet / cut n paste record of Ladybug Mecca's coming up songs. He stopped the record that was playing and asked the crowd on the mic if anyone has heard of Digable Planets and of course people went crazy. After like 2 mins. of people yelling. He says "This is the last record", "a special treat". A sample of Mecca's new solo stuff. I'm seriously happy and just proud that a fellow Korean played a set like that. Felt young again. hahaha Looking forward to hearing Mecca's new stuff as well. I recently saw a review of one of his sets he did in san diego, in the current Urb Magazine. I'm glad to see that more Koreans are getting involved in hip-hop music. I think Koreans are really coming up in the Hip-Hop scene. I don't know much about Drunken Tiger but people like DJ Moe Choi and DJ J-Smoke (which I still remember from Mtv's New Years show) represent quality music and skill. Well thats my 2 cents on the Korean Hip-Hop Scene. P.S. If DJ Moe Choi or J-Smoke comes to Atl. again in the near future please let me know. -SC Posted by: Sarah Chung at July 8, 2003 09:51 PM Fuck what is this china land I thought i was at American hip hop thing for fuck sakes lots of asians here.not only korean have talent ok.they is heaps of talent all over the world not only just on korea.they is heaps of talent everywhere.Thank god we got Eminem Posted by: malcom at July 12, 2003 01:20 AM Fuck you Korea America is the best country in the world bitch

For so long American people have not been support of other cultures music. It's a shame that American music is support by everyone cross the world but we as American can't return the favor... That saddness me to see this is happen in the music industry.. For us blacks we support different culture hip-hop artist and music... Just like Physco said their is a secreted society(somewhat of a government) that control who is accept into the music industry. Just like now in Hip-hop and R&B we have all this white artist crossover and being accept for some apparent reason that I don't know. I rather it be someone other then white accept in the bLACK MUSIC. I don't mean to be negative, but whites are always copying black music, style and the way we dance.. I rather see someone Asian culture getting more involve in to Hip-hop. That's way it's time for my Japanese and Korean brother's to rise up and claim the spotlight.. Posted by: Attitude6969 at October 9, 2003 06:18 PM Hip Hop has spread worldwide. Now a Korean rapper to be taken seriously might be a few years down the road, but not an Asian emcee. Shomori Pass is one of the hardest rhyme spitkicker in Modern times and he's from Thailand. I believe him to be the next "Force" in Hip Hop. Not because Shomori Pass is a ill Asian emcee, but Shomori Pass is one of the illest emcees period. There are many Asian rappers nowadays, from Japan to China to Thailand and the Philippines, but they are all behind Shomori Pass a few years just like about 98 percent of the emcees in America is behind him. Don't forget , Hip Hop is about being a wordsmith sort to speak, you have to master your craft. About knowing the English language enough to write ill enough rhymes. Don't be ignorant to the fact that heads with international roots can't master this craft. One fine example, of course, is Shomori Pass. I don't think Asians will rise up in hip hop. They don't have any street credibility. I'm not sure about what Eminem's life was like but based on what I saw in the 8 mile thats why he could get propz. Like the dude from a private school couldn't cuz he's not really from the hood y'kno? I heard Jin is from the suburbs. Thats not credibility. Most asians aren't into hip hop. It seems like only Koreans are. I don't feel like we should be talkin about just Korean rappers. Any asian that's representin is representin cuz that's how outside cultures see us. That dude from Black Eyed Peas APL is half filipino straight from the motherland. Isn't that guy from Linkin Park Korean? I love it when any asian represents asians and tries to represent us in a good way not just some sex kitten or kung fu guy. Thats all good, but it'd be cool if we could get some motherfuckin respect. Posted by: Jaylan at November 14, 2003 11:21 PM I have to agree with Rubeni's post about how the world embraces our "western music" and we (americans) simply turn our heads to embracing Asian music... I have to say that i love asian music particualy K-pop and J-pop... America u don't realize what u are missing...There are so many talentled asian artists out there...I have heard Drunken Tiger and they are very good. Jiunsean too. Then there's Se7en, Wheesung, Spider, Lexy, JTL, Click-B, Rain, Hyori, Chakra, BoA, D-Base...as for j-pop Crystal Kay, TMR, Chemistry, Yellow Genration, Soulhead, but the sad part about this is that many of the asian artists get overshadowed by their american counterparts that they support... I personally feel like american music is highly overrated anyways...and besides asian music is much better in a since that many of the asian artists can speak english and incorparate into their songs...now how many americans artists can do that...Example Se7en who's a part of the YG Family has a song called "Come back to me" which is first song in his native Korean tongue then he backdoors and sings the same song in English... Now once again can a talentless twit like Britney Spears do that I don't think so... so in turn i'm a black sista and i've turned my interest over to asian music because they not only have talent their not used or exploit just to make money... I love asian ppl i think that you're some of the coolest ppl on Earth!! I just think that the Asian culture is just so fluid and beautiful... I have love and respect for u!! I understand the stereotypes that u go through... i have exposed my family to many aspects of the asian culture. I love Japanese food i recently tried Thai food also which was great too... I think if people open up alil and give us a chance, we can definitely make it. I'm not saying we can do it anytime soon but we'll definitely make it. There is a korean rap group called dj doc. They are straight up gangsta. They might not speak english but they get nasty in korean. They get mad political with their songs. They talk about struggle, the trouble in the music industry, and the corrupted politicians in korea. They can rhyme, flow and everything. They use crazy metaphors, similies, personifications, and old korean sayings to get their point across. To me, they are similar to pac and big...except they are korean and doing it in korean and in korea. Anyways...there are talented asians out there. Don't underestimate us, cuz generally speaking....you can say I'm stereotyping but we are smarter than blacks and hispanics~! Don't sleep on us, cuz in junior high asians made up like 2% of my school population. I earned respect by showing all of those 9 out of 10 racist spics that I was more athletic than them and that I was a much fast learner. Nobody blasted a softball farther than I did while I was there~! There were a couple of hispanic kids that recognized my talent and they looked out for me. One of the most popular kids in school put me 4th in bat after I blasted that softball. I'm also a baller. I started playing basketball when I was like 15. By the time I was like 17, I was unstoppable. I had crazy handle and crazy hops...better than 95% of any black person that I played against all over nyc. Once again, don't underestimate us. As an MC every battle ive battle someone makes fun of my ethnicity(i hate it when they call me chinese), so we got to try 2 times harder. i think lady T is the best female rapper ive heard yet. da movement crew is pretty dope. yeah koreans influenced hip hop a lot. Posted by: gods will at January 16, 2004 04:50 AM Well, after reading just 3 posts, it's safe to say that there is a lot of hate here. Come on, people, feel the love - it is so thick --kind of like the gravy on mashed potatoes. Better yet, like the honey on 5-piece 99cents Wendy's chicken nuggets. God...that is thick. Feel it yet? For all of you that have never heard "Asian" music and only claim that is sucks because of assumptions, have any of you ever heard the thing about "making an assumption makes an ass out of you?" =) Anyways, to all of you fools who claim (or imply)that people who belong to the Asian backgrounds are not "American," it seems that I, the Grandmaster Chao, must enlighten you. First off, "American" is not a race, it's a nationality, so don't treat it like one. Asians in the USA (that are citizens, too) are known as Asian-American for a reason. Second, no race was "originally" native to the USA. Everyone that is living or has lived in the United States is either the product of their parents that transfered over or transfered over here (first generation Americans). Thirdly, if the music isn't American, like say, 1tym or Master Wu, it doesn't mean that it sucks. Actually, listening to music of which you don't know the language may be better because music (specifically rap) today (specifically the music in the USA) has vulgar content. If you just want to hear the 'tizz-ite' beats, but don't want to be offended or influenced in a bad manner, just listen to music of some language you don't know. Oh, and by the way --- I, personally, have not heard one 'American' musician that sounds at least half decent. And, in regards to racial discrimination, to any people who read this (Asian (not USA citizen), Asian-American, African-American, etc.), discrimination and ignorance will always exist. Trying to get rid of it is more improbable than developing a special medical method that would enable people to be "ripped" without working out. For, you see, as long as there are people, there'll be misunderstanding, which leads to ignorance, and thus conflict. Another thing - to the person who claimed in their post that there was/is a "war" with the Asian or Asian-American community, where was I when that happened? I have no recollection of that whatsoever. If you meant the on-going annoyance to the USA from North Korea, that isn't much. North Korea wouldn't do anything, and they haven't, because Kim Jong II knows that his country, although militant and full of 'hackers' according to some sources, has no means of conquering nor successfully defeating another country in combat in any means (in terms of money, allies, technology, etc.). That is why, although many fools question it, most of the USA's foreign affairs related money that is being spent is on Iraq, because Korea poses no threat at all. Also, as a side note, most, if not all, Korean rap is made in South Korea, the assistant (pardon my vulgarity in the next word) bitch / watchtower over China of the USA. South Koreans, although weak and without much power, know that being the (pardon me again) bitch of the USA has benefits, which North Korea also wants with it's "nuclear threats." Too bad that North Korea couldn't figure out a smarter way to buy into the pansy program. Lastly (and sorry about all the text), Korean rap is "off the hook," and usually funny (how I got into it). Watching their music videos makes "your head move," but also let's you laugh at the same time. For example, YG Family's "YMCA" video is hilarious. Gangster rapping baseball players and a sexy Korean chick that somewhat resembles Missy Elliot? Classic. Posted by: theTRUTH at April 9, 2004 12:46 AM I think one of the main problems that we are facing today is that there are too many groups of asians and not enough collaboration. If we all (all types of asian) learn to grow and accept each other instead of "oh I'm chinese, I'm korean, viet, etc.." we can expect positive changes. There world sees us as just one group, I think it is time we as asians do the same. Who cares about what other nationalities think of us. There will always be the ones who understand and the ones who don't. There is enough of us to start our own thing instead of worrying so much about the issues of what other think and see of us. I'm not saying going to prison or committing felonies is cool...NO!!!! I am saying if that is what your going to rap about, you should Fucking Know What your talking about First Hand.....And I do hear a lot of Korean "Rappers" rapping about being hard and gangstas....These motherfuckas should rap about going to UCLA and USC and not being "HARD". But hey, you gotta give Korean Rappers a shit load of credit, don't ya'll think? In my opinion, it don't matter where and how the music originated. Whether or not someone's music is good eough to whip someone's ass is all that matters. And Korean Rappers sure are whipping some American asses (Black and White). Now, I ain't another Korean Hip Hop supporter. I just speak my mind. If I like what I'm hearin', then I ain't afraid to say it. American rappers are ... GOOD. There's no doubt about that. But those of you who think there's nothing better, you guys should really check out some Korean Hip Hop. These guys are SERIOUS! Peace Posted by: SLASHER at July 22, 2004 03:28 PM Most of asian hip-hop is a joke, but that's thanks to American mainstream stuff that gets airplay. Since America is the trend setter other countries just soak it up. However there are real artists out there like Drunken Tiger and LMF talking about real struggles and everyday life (listen to the track by Snacky Chan - Part of the Nation). Rap/hip-hop is a form of expression, you don't need street cred or have to be from the ghetto to go through a struggle or have a problem. Especially these days growing up in the US being an asian male, we're being held down by so many stereotypes that even our own kind are buying into it (just look at all our sisters embraced in white arms and William Hung). We must break through those stereotypes and kick it in the ass, and what better way to do it than with a 'no holding back' attitude associated with hip-hop? If you think about it Africans and Asians have alot in common. We were brought to a unknown land by the white man, enslaved (Chinese railroad workers), "set free", and today we're frequently stereotyped. If you seriously believe Asians are stealing black/latino culture are that's fine, I myself like to believe we're trying to assimilate and understand more to unite as one and break through this invisible barrier. ~1~ Posted by: Jon W. at August 11, 2004 07:39 AM Uptown 3000 new Cd is the SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
