April 28, 2003The Butcher Says This Beef is Not KosherMy twin brother Jon at hiphop anonymous, posted this story about Kay Slay speaking out against beef, which is rather like Colonel Sanders speaking out against chicken. : DJ Tells 50 Cent, Ja Rule: One More Dis Record, Then Quit It This reminds of how Richard Pryor said he knew he hit rock bottom when even his own dealer said he was doing too much coke, and refused to sell him any more. (BTW, the co-writer of that article is one of my oldest friends in the "hip-hop industry", Minya Oh. We both wrote for The Source wayyyyy back in the day, when it was still respectable.) Coming here always puts a smirk on my face: "Colonel Sanders speaking out against chicken." Yea, that Kay Slay statement was not intelligent. Posted by: Jon at April 28, 2003 01:02 PM Kay Slay probably has the most juice right now to make a truce happen. Both camps have shown him plenty of respect. BTW...when was the Source ever respectable? Posted by: Madison at April 28, 2003 02:27 PM Wow, that's really tragic if Mays and Benzino have tarnished the Source for so long that heads aren't even aware of what an important, pioneering publication it was in the beginning. When the Source started out, under the leadership of Jon Shecter, James Bernard, and Reginald Dennis, it set a new standard for Hip-Hop journalism, it was truly the hip-hop bible. It would be a terrible shame if that chapter of history is blotted out by Mays/Benzino era. It wasn't until 93 or 94 that Benzino's extortion of David Mays reached a point that it was severely compromising the magazine's integrity, which forced all those co-founders to resign in protest, along with many other staffers, including Minya (I had already left at that point). Posted by: jay smooth at April 28, 2003 02:44 PM I personally don't give a F**k about these beefs by major recording artists. I don't even know what's their "beef" anyway when all of them are making more than enough $$$ and most of them are exploiting hip hop by putting out sell out music anyway. Kay Slay should STFU because he is one of the person that's been fanning all of these BS beefs by BS artists and claiming fame from all of these "diss" tracks. So for him to say this doesn't make any sense to me. So the very thing that kinda put him on the "map", now he's going to purge it for whatever reason he may have? Whatever! In any case, these "diss" tracks are only good for a few laughs and nothing else. I mean, I will probably remember and listen to say... Pete Rock & C L Smooth's "TROY" forever, but who in the right mind will remember and listen to all these garbage after month from now, a year from now, or even a decade from now? Probably nobody. That just says it all about quality of these "diss" tracks anyway. It's all about their pity bullshit beefs and self gratification. I only listen to them to get a laugh to laugh at them, not with them. I detest person like Kay Slay, who seems to think putting out exclusive diss tracks are part of DJs skill?! Now trying to stop "diss" tracks, which he used to promote and put his name by? Come on, give me a break! What is he scared of now? As to Source... I was never big fan of reading magazines, unless there were good amount of pictorials... But I do remember when Source used to cover more credible topics and it wasn't all about one person's (Benzino's)forum to make his dumbass points (have any of you seen some of the illustrations (posters) that came with recent Source? it's ridiculous!). I remember when they used cover real "unsigned hype" and did review some up and coming underground artists and albums. But now, it's worthless than toilet papers. Only Hip Hop related magazine I used to buy was Elemental... I haven't bought an issue for almost a year but they were (and are?) cope hip hop magazine. But I'm surprized that people are still buying Source when there's more advertisement in the entire magazine than actual articles. And those articles are not even worth reading anyway because they are so biased. But yes, Source was credible long time ago. It seems like things always seems to start out with good intention, only to go bad when they start making big money. It's spelled "MUREDR". "it goes through slay, and you're gay" err, I have no idea what that means. But I think Kay Slay should make that his new slogan. "If it goes through Slay, you must be gay!" Posted by: jay smooth at April 28, 2003 05:28 PM Yo, But Jay, man . . . this is really f**kin' funny: It's official, Jay is the new and improved Drama King. Ha! Ha! I can't stop laughing.
