May 05, 2003Walter Sisulu, 1912-2003R.I.P. to one of the greatest heroes of the Anti-Apartheid movement, Nelson Mandela's right hand man for 50 years. As Hip-Hop representative I will note he was name-dropped by Chubb Rock on The One: "Long live the ANC, Walter Sisulu from South Africa, Mr. Mandela you're the real one" Walter Sisulu, Mandela Mentor and Comrade, Dies at 90 (I'm putting in such a long excerpt because the NY Times has a crappy new policy of making all their pages inaccessible after a week or so.) wow i had no idea about him before...thank you for posting this. Particularly poignant to me was the mentor-disciple relationship the two of them had...the tale of their dedication to peace, lack of vengefulness, and stints in prison remind me very much of the relationship between Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda...mentor and disciple respectively. Makiguchi and Toda went to prison during WWII after protesting against Japan's military government when they imposed strict religious control of religions and thought. They were arrested as "thought criminals" and stayed in prison for many years. Makiguchi died in prison tho. When Toda was eventually released, he resolved to change Japan, help the people become happy and free, and help to realize the dreams of peace of his fallen mentor. Posted by: Damali at May 6, 2003 12:34 AM "Bitterness does not do your cause any good," Mr. Sisulu said. "That doesn't mean you don't get angry. But you don't let it get in the way of your policy." that should be posted and read aloud before every legislative session of the u.s. congress. thanks for posting this one, j.
