May 07, 2003Right Wingaz Wit Attitude (An N-Word Double Feature)The N word (which I will henceforth refer to as "Ninja", in the tradition of Sacha Jenkins) is a hot news item today. First I saw this strange tale of a Florida radio host who thinks calling Black people "Ninjas" is no different than calling Republicans "right wingers": Using n-word endangers talk host's diversity role Politically correct? As I said to a friend's journal, I've always hated that phrase, and the feat of "ignorance is strength" rhetorical alchemy it is used to achieve. How it lets every type of bigot pose self-righteously like they are the true victims of intolerance, and pointing out their bigotry makes us the real bigots. Or as my friend quoted in another post: "We have now reached the point where every goon with a grievance, every bitter bigot, merely has to place the prefix, 'I know this is not politically correct, but...' in front of the usual string of insults in order to be not just safe from criticism, but actually a card, a lad, even a hero. Conversely, to talk about poverty and inequality, to draw attention to the reality that discrimination and injustice are still facts of life, is to commit the sin of political correctness. Anti-PC has become the latest cover for creeps. It is a godsend for every curmudgeon and crank, from fascists to the merely smug." ---Finian O`Toole, The Irish Times, 5 May 1994 Anyway soon after reading that piece I made another Ninja sighting in the campus paper of California State University Chico: 'America's most loaded word' finds its way to classPosted by jsmooth995 at May 7, 2003 07:25 PM Comments
it is absurd to me that this man was even ON the diversity committee in the first place! what were they thinking?? Posted by: nshgrl at May 7, 2003 08:14 PM I guess they wanted a diversity of intelligence levels? Posted by: Jay Smooth at May 7, 2003 08:17 PM Calling black people the n-word is in no way comparable to calling conservatives right wingers. A closer analogy would be calling right wingers fascists because fascist at least has a derogatory tone to it. I think whenever a white person uses the n-word they sound like a complete moron. Posted by: Cal Ulmann at May 8, 2003 01:59 PM As a latin kid I used the "socially accepted" form in response to black friends calling me the same. A had a short post about something similar a few days ago: Posted by: Jon at May 8, 2003 04:54 PM How dare this radio host use word N*****!! And to say that it is offensive as calling Conservatives "right wingers"? That's just ridiculous! N words couldn't be compared to "right wingers". Did "right wingers" ever been called that nane while they were being chained and whipped under forced labor? I don't think so. Boo hoo, if he thinks that being "right winger" is as harsh as being called "N*****". I mean after all, you have a choice to not be a "right winger", whereas being a black person is not a choice... you are born into it. Just as I had no other choice than being a Japanese. I can not believe that this person is a radio host and fact that he represents "diversity comittee". I guess they wanted diversed perspectives for this comittee rather than a person who promotes diversity. I was never chased down like this person in the article but when I first arrived at Oregon State University, I definitely felt racism in the air. Like Lawrence Fishborne couldn't point out what's so racist about Australia, it was the same way for me. I've felt it in the air, but it was hard to explain. It just felt like I had to prove myself more than others, in order to be accepted in the predominantly white community. But I did have share of racial slurrs thrown at me, specially when people were intoxicated. Also you'll be surprised how many white people around me are still using "N word" frequently when there's no African Americans around. I think they are coward because I hear them use the word frequently but never use them when they are around African Americans... Some even act like they are friends, even though they do use N word frequently when they are out of sight. Since I know emotional scars and stress involved with such words, I try to never even use any of those racial slurrs. This is not because I'm PC, it is because I feel that I remotely understand what it's like to be an "outsider" in midst of white folks being called names not because of your personality but because of your skin color... I am happy now that I did go to small town university like Oregon State because it has taught me many things about racism and how people act collectively (I think people seems to be more racist when they are in numbers, maybe peer pressure or mob mentality... but that's not a good excuse either). Damn, we still have waaaaaaaays to go b4 this race thing is behind us. Posted by: DJ Musashi at May 8, 2003 05:33 PM Keep the good work.
