Fear and Loathing in the Mosh Pit

As mentioned on Okayplayer, indie-rap icon Sage Francis recently signed with the Punk label Epitaph records, and this news has started a fierce debate on Epitaph's website. Some fans are lamenting Epitaph's attempt to "sellout" or "go commercial" by signing the "OG Rapper" Sage, which has to get a chuckle from anyone familiar his work:

"oh my god..this is the demise of this label. Whats next Brett? you gonna sign 4 cute boys to dance and sing like the backstreet boys?"

"there should be some type of cleanliness left on our labels, and not the infiltration of bad music such as rap."

Yes, because as everybody knows, Punk is all about cleanliness.

Who woulda thunk the Punk world could be populated by such narrow-minded sheep, who embody everything Punk (as i understand it) was meant to rebel against? But to be fair, the majority of replies are more sensible:

"I am thoroughly glad about this. Punk doesnt have a sound, but a feeling. Sage has seen the problems of our society and expresses them. That IS Punk. The most Punk song ever is 1920's The Jazz song "Strange Fruit" By Billie Holiday. It speaks of taboos and she fought to perform it wherever she went. The racism spoken of in that song still exists. Bravo Epitaph."

It took me a while but I'm a fan of Sage Francis' work. I think it is fresh to hear Sage experimenting with Hip Hop, Rock, and other music (having live band at the show is dope too). I'm usually a "Hip Hop Purist"... I prefer boom bap over ambient and experimental sounds. But way Sage delivers with his intricate and conscious lyrics backed by haunting beats produced by Joey Beats are very interesting and stand out from ever oversaturated indie/underground hip hop scene. Even with all of these hip hop artists in the game, I think he is doing fairly well creating his own niche in the vast hip hop landscape. It is a surprise to hear that Sage is signed with Epitaph (label that pushed Bay Area Punk bands like NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise, and others). But I think it could be a good thing because I really don't see any other "Hip Hop" label that may fit well with Sage and his style (maybe EC or Def Jux). I also don't see what the big fuss is about with all of these punk rockers. Punk rock is about rebeling against establishment, it's about being anti-social. If people listen to Sage's music, you know he is all about that. So from lyrical perspective, Sage is a Punk. So what's the big deal? Anyway, I don't think it really matters if Sage is signed with Epitaph or Motown as long as he doesn't compromise his music and keep his integrity. Far as I can tell with Sage, he will keep on doing what he does best no matter who he's signed with. It will be more of a challenge for Epitaph to promote Sage, since they seems to never had any other "hip hop" artist on their roaster before. I wish them best!
But you know what? I do kinda feel for these fans complaining... When I found out that ODB (now known as Dirt McGirt) signed with Roc A Fella.... When I heard this, I was sort of disappointed. I mean, ODB on Roc A Fella? But I guess I shouldn't be disappointed until I hear his new material... Hopefully he can prove that he hasn't lost any... My thought was that if Wu Tang did things smarter back when they were on top, they would have their own label now and shouldn't have to have all of them members signed to different labels... Wu had good intentions but I think they messed up their plan to take over the industry as they used to say on their first album... Man, I strayed from the topic again...

I wonder if they bitched this much when Merle Haggard was first added to the label. He wasn't punk either.

didn't punk rockers and hip hop cats have a close relationship in the late 70s - early 80s?

yeah punk rock and hip hop were created around the same time and used to have the same type of content, anti establishment, introspective, outrageous. the first number one hip hop album on the charts were the beastie boys and they used to be a hardcore band

anyone who says brett has fucked up is a tool. straight and simple.
rap, punk, what ever. he's not manufacturing anyone.
the soul purpose of epitaph was to give bands a chance.
bad religion fought for a name in the industry, hence the label epitaph..

brett and his lable have always stayed true to the dudes that don't get a chance. that's how it started, and that's how it continued to be.
if a rap group/band/what-ever-you-call-it, need brett to give them a break, then GREAT.

and to all you wankers out there. epitaph never 'sold out'. it just happens to be that they bought successful bands. OH NO! isn't that what a record company is all about? DEAR GOD! you wouldn't want anyone to be SUCCESSFUL! please lord have mercy on our souls.... get lost.
