Roc-A-Fella vs. Rockefeller
Russell Simmons organized another rally against New York's atrocious Rockefeller drug laws today, and brought out a bunch of his a-list friends. I've got to give Russell credit where it's due, his forays into the political arena have sometimes struck me as self-serving but this one is certainly for a good cause.
With the powers that be claiming to be sympathetic but mysteriously failing to act upon this sentiment, maybe Russell's media savvy can help tip the scales and make something happen here...especially if we the people make our voices heard and show them this is not just the latest celebrity be-in. On that note, I should give a shoutout to The Kunstler Fund, who were on the front lines of this battle long before Russell brought it into the limelight.
Diddy, Jay-Z, Susan Sarandon Rally Against New York Drug Laws
Russell Simmons and friends such as Susan Sarandon, P. Diddy, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Fat Joe, Tim Robbins, Dead Prez and Dame Dash made their voices heard Wednesday (June 4) at City Hall, where they rallied against New York state's strict drug sentencing laws.
"When I was younger, I would see kids get caught with an ounce [of narcotics] and do 10, 15 years," Dash said. "I never understood that. I don't think they deserve 10, 15 years. There's a lot of other things that need to be addressed at that time to make the person a better individual and make them evolve as a better human being, rather than come out [of jail] bitter."
"The laws aren't fair," said Jay-Z as he made his way to the stage. "I personally know a lot of people that's locked up unjustly and unfairly. [The MCs] have got the streets, so we gotta come out here and show our support, our strong voice."
Diddy said rappers should pay especially close attention to the state's Rockefeller drug laws — enacted in 1973 when Nelson Rockefeller was governor — because of the enormous impact they've had on the hip-hop community.
"This law has affected hip-hop, our families, our friends, our future," Diddy said backstage. "Ninety-six percent of the people incarcerated by this law are minorities. It's one of the most unjust laws in history...

I admire the effort to change thesse laws. I have been recently release after serving 27 years, 10 months and 18 day in La. State Penitentiary at Angola. We had brothers there serving life for selling one and two street bags of herion. P.Diddy met some of these brothers when he came to Angola to make Monster's Ball. I am trying to register ex-offenders to vote. Need all the help I can get. Thanks!

uh to the gentle above, i don't know if RUN was ever junkie, but it was russell whom was heavily into drugs back in the day--it's possible they both were though. But anywho...
I commend and greatly appreciate the efforts of those involved, but having said that...why not make this issue, and many others, affecting--infecting--the community even more relevant by bringing more attention to it on a regular basis instead of every now and again. why not mention it in damn near every interview; on stage in front of a live audience after a performance; on tv (i.e. oprah, barbara walters, or anyone else willing to do an interview); at the BET Music Awards, on the MTV Video Music Awards; the Source Awards (and interviews for that matter); rock T-shirts with the cause on them (like when they all sported 2pac, Biggie, Aaliyah, Left-Eye, and JMJ T's and airbrushes; hell half these artists now make their own clothing so why not sell a few T's to get the cause out there (if we make Fat Albert t-shirts fashionable i imagine we could make politically/socially conscious T's fashionable too); why not put information (i.e. websites and registration forms) inside of album/CD covers?; there is so much MORE that can be done that isn't.
why not bombard the people/the public/the community/the legislators with these words and images until they stick, thus shaping the psyche of anyone listening? --much like the brother mentioned in an article entitled "HIP HOP Activism" on the front page of this website. Bombard the people just has hard has the legislators and the media does when they want to shape and control our psyches on certain issues (i.e. "gangsta" rap, "terrorism", "war on terrorism", "homeland security", "war on drugs", and the list goes on and on).
All of these terms our legislative/media induced terms that stuck all because they forced it down our throats. so why can't the HIP HOP community and those involved, in not only this issue but EVERY issue (drug laws, healthcare, housing, employment, etc.), do the same?
