ugh. That whole "magical negro" concept is so annoying and overused. there's no way Queen Latifah was a magical negro in Chicago. anyone who saw it knows that. So the simple fact that she's mentioned next to that phrase makes me give it even less credence. If there were no black people at all in movies then folks would still be complainin...we're in movies folks complain cuz of the 'type' of role, i.e., Halle & Cuba...its a no win situation for black actors so fuck it. mmm I don't know about that Damali, I think there is a real issue here. I may not agree with some of the specific examples here (Morpheus is kinda iffy), but I don't see how anyone who watches Hollywood movies could deny that the Magic Negro trend is a legitimate issue that deserves more analysis.

Whether Latifah's role in Chicago fits into that category doesn't prove anything, nobody claimed that film was an example of this trend.

Pointing out isolated cases that don't fit does nothing to disprove the existence of a trend. I could name a dozen cases where the NYPD investigated a crime without killing any innocent people, but that doesn't mean there is no significant pattern of Blacks being murdered by police in NY. It doesn't have have to happen 100% of the time to be a significant pattern.

And I definitely wouldn't agree that we should just be happy we are getting roles, no matter what they are. I think it's crucial for us to keep a critical eye on what types of opportunities we are given, how we are being portrayed and what messages are being sent (both intentionally and unwittingly).

And comparing the NYPD killing innocent to Blacks in movie roles seems kinda uneven to me. One is wayyyyy more important than the other.

While i agree that Blacks need to be mindful of how they are portrayed and the messages that we/they are sending out, I don't feel that the Magical Negro is as rampant (or purposeful!) as some make it out to be. Blacks fill hundreds of movie roles per year...if one or two of those can be considered Magical, i'd say that isn't so bad.

We also have to look at how the movie business works. Most films that feature a mostly white was not written with any black person in mind. Black actors and their agents lobby to get certain roles then if they succeed, the role can be changed to reflect the actor who was cast. I'm sure Morgan's role in Bruce Almighty could have easily been portrayed by a white person. Alanis Morissette played God in a film and no one cried out about the Magical Female. So just because a black man got the part, one who i'm sure could use the work, he's now thrust with the burden of Magical Negro. That just doesn't sit right with me. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the filmmakers because we don't know who the role was initially intended for.

It isn't that the actors or the roles aren't likable, valuable or redemptive, but they are without interior lives. For the most part, they materialize only to rescue the better-drawn white characters....

The "magical negro" is never evil are they? is it me or do blacks play a myriad of different roles in films...and in addition, the "magical negro" is not the only character that isn't fully fleshed out a film..there are many in every film. there is not time to develop every character fully..edits get made..some roles are more important than others...

i could go on and on with my problems with this whole thing but the bottom line is: its not that "big" of a deal compared to other problems that blacks have in the movie/entertainment industry. Somebody write a story about getting an agent.

and one more thing about messages we send out..

As we all know, one cannot please all of the people all of the time. An actor may choose a role thinking its not sending out any negative messages about anything, i.e. Halle in Monster's Ball...i've read many interviews and heard her on the DVD..she has no issues whatsoever with her role in that film. But we all know that many other black people do.

She doesn't see it that way. So who's right? Who is the all powerful one that gets to decide what message I or other black actors may be sending? Its very subjective.

Sometimes Black people can be way over critical of things that other black people do. Like i said before, its often a no-win situation.

"If you're going to play Mystic Negro, I'll buy you the robe."

I love that line but it encapsulates the way black characters in "lofty positions" are often viewed. Danny Glover in Lethal Weapon, C. Epatha Markeson on Law & Order, etc. etc. ...as "The Sage" as opposed to "The Hero."
