June 09, 2003Cuban Hip-Hop Comes to HarlemThis week we were greatly honored to have two of Cuba's foremost hip-hop groups represented on the radio show, Doble Filo and Obsesion. It was sweet meeting these young guys with such a great energy, representing a hip-Hop subculture that thrives despite the many obstacles in its path, lack of resources, and little chance of fame or fortune. In other words, a place where people live hip-hop for the love of it, like it used to be over here. I'm on my way to see those guys perform at the Apollo tonite, with the Roots backing them up. I'll make a more complete post with pictures and audio later, but for now you can check out Jon's comments at hiphopanonymous.net, since he was also in the house on Saturday. I had a chance to see Doble FIlo y Obsesion when I was living and studying at the Universidad de la Habana. And yeah, they do it because of the love of it. because they want to serve and improvement some of the things that could be improved and changed within the revolution. There's another sector however, that does hip hop to attract hip hop fanatics from other countries to see if they can gain a chance at fame and leave cuba. So, you fine both kinds... THe important thing is that over there hip hop is in its childish stages and still very revolutionary. It's the best lyrically wrotten and spoken music all over latin america. And the reasons why there are obstacles in the path of this genre in cuba is because its new (only 10yrs ago it started) and cubans (especially older revolutionary cubans) don't understand what this genre is all about...thats why mainly there are young people involved. and also, its important to take into account that they are influences from the U.S. so thats another factor. peace in this struggle, Posted by: Carmen Julia at September 17, 2003 03:49 PM Hiya, I was wondering (hoping) that someone who finds this post might have the track listing for Obsesion & Doble Filo's album, which I bought at their Harlem show but which doesn't have any information (it was, supposedly, a halway-done album that they hadn't finalized the mix for). I really like the album, and would like to play some of it on the radio, but need to know song titles. If you have any info, please email me. Thanks! Posted by: Stopheles at April 23, 2004 11:33 AM i really dont think that its fair that when people think of the word afro-latino they never really think of cubans well i hope that your culture, and music is soon appriciated !
