June 11, 2003Activists Warn Russell Not to RushIn my previous posts that gave props to Russell Simmons for his recent protests against the Rockefeller drug laws, I've made a point to acknowledge the other folks who were fighting this fight long before Russell joined in, such as Drop the Rock and the Kunstler Fund. Well it turns out there is some tension between those groups and Russell's people, disagreement over who should speak for this movement and what path it should take, according to the Village Voice: Movement Hijacked by Hiphop?Posted by jsmooth995 at June 11, 2003 11:58 PM Comments
to focus on "repeal vs. reform" misses the point: until drugs are legalized, criminal activity will surround the drug trade. the government has little incentive to leaglize drugs. legalization would cause the global economy to collapse and 50 Cent would have nothing left to rap about. i asked what were the best/worst scenarios, i.e .what would be russell selling out and what would be serious and useful reform. she said the worst case is that russell ok's pataki's proposal, which would limit the most egregious cases of long-sentences for first time users, but affect very few people. she said the best case was for russell to push the state assembly plan, which pataki has opposed, but which would be a serious improvement over the current situation. i find the article a little suspect for not delving into the what kind of reforms would be "very limited and that would be worse than no deal at all", tho i did like credico's remark that "Well, you got to talk to the people you are making that deal for." (*insert plug for Adolph Reed's Class Notes, which is all about the latter*) Posted by: missiamma at June 12, 2003 10:50 AM yup, the man quoted in that article is bob gangi, who runs (used to run?) the correctional association of new york, which i'd posted about on this site earlier. he's dope! totally knows what the hell he's talking about and is genuinely involved in this. www.correctionalassociation.org fuck russell. people need to listen to organizations like this one! Posted by: becca at June 12, 2003 11:46 AM How exactly would it cause the "global economy" to collapse? Posted by: Esquire at June 16, 2003 03:10 PM Wars are won by attacks from all fronts. We are up against a very ruthless opponent in the White House. People like Russell Simmons, whether you like him or not, can bring issues to a different platform. Issues that normally would not be newsworthy for the average American who is being bombarded by the Laci Peterson's story. If we don't start putting down our differences soon, we are going to have 4 more years of the CRAZY WHITE HOUSE.....
