Kingsley Shacklebolt

I'm sorry but I just have to mention this. I'm about 50 pages into "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", and lo and behold, there is a Black wizard in this one! I'm glad to see JK Rowling make a little effort to diversify Harry's world.. he just better not get killed, that's all I have to say.

you know, the thing i've always liked about JK Rowling is that race has never seemed to be an issue in any of the books. there's an asian girl who harry has a crush on in the book and etc etc. there's always been enough diversity in the characters, miss rowling doesn't seem concerned about being obnoxiously pc in choosing her characters, nor does she seem set on making her books totally white bred. it's a nice change, i think.

ps. kinglsey doesn't die, heh. wanna know who does? i'll tell you on AIM later, suckah.

Posted by: jennifer at June 22, 2003 09:46 PM

Wow!! So you're the one that read that BIBLE of a book in one day?!

I know I mentioned this to Damali, but remember how I said yesterday that a BLACK WIZARD came and sat down next to me in Union Square the other day? That is wierd.

Posted by: Jon at June 22, 2003 10:25 PM

Jenn: well, race is always an issue. :) But yes, before the movies came out I wasn't really very concerned with it, in fact since in the first book she never specified anyone's race I imagined the ensemble as having some diversity. For some reason I pictured Neville Longbottom as being a light skinned black kid with dreadlocks, probably because his name reminded me of the Neville Brothers.

It wasn't until the first movie came out, and offered a vision of Hogwarts as about 98.9% white, that I started to wonder what was what.

It's interesting that she went out of her way to specify that Kingsley is Black, since I don't recall her specifying anyone's ethnicity up until now, although Cho Chang's was obviously implied by her name.

Yo! The Black Wizard better not be a Magic Negro in that Harry Potter book.

;-)

Hee Hee.

Keeping reading!

Holla!

To me it seems that there is no problem with Kingsley beeing specified i mean i image all the people in the book as different races but i reckon that it doesn't matter if the author says someone has a certain style hair, coloured skin, hieght etc cause the reader will always create the character themselves. oh yeah and i reckon Kingsley rocks 2. he and Tonks kinda replace 'the one who dies' in my fav character but no charcter will ever fully replace 'the one who dies'

Posted by: Me at June 25, 2003 09:05 PM

Tonks is definately a favourite of mine now, as is Shacklebolt. I'm still sad though that "the one" had to die. I kinda had it narrowed down by chapter 10 to two persons who was going die.

Posted by: moi at June 30, 2003 09:33 AM

Yeah...When they get around to producing the fifth movie, I can see Avery Brooks (Captain sisko from DS9, one of the head hit men in "The Big Hit") Cast as Shacklebolt...I couldn't help but laugh at the "He better not die" comment.
He was SURPRISINGLY bad-ass at the end of the book. two at once? even Dumbledore wasn't doing that....well...because they ran...but still?

AVERY BROOKS!!!

i dont know if this will even end up in the right place, but RE kingsley shacklebolt, i was astounded at the ethnic diversity of hogwarts' kids! i agree that the way rowling introduce the appearence of her characters is cringy, but this applies as much to her overuse of "pretty" for everyone from padma to hermione to madame rosmerta.
A few things get me:
-why would wizrds move? not for economic reasons i presume ie they'llk never been lookig for work
-why are all hogwarts students so noramlised? they're all English whatever thier race, no one hads an accent, ron has never really heard of other wizarding schools. everyone seems totally competant in the type of magic practised at hogwarts despite hermione mentioning how interesting (and therefore presumably different) the magic of the ancient egyptians was. we canto presume that all magic is conducted in pseudo-latin like at hogwarts. interestingly we never hear any durmstrang/beauxbatons casting spells, so we...
-okay, there are plenty of black characters...yes ms rowling, all KIDS will want to read it...but where are the adults? its the same at my school. recruiting largely from london, we have a high propportion of black studnets, yet only one black member of staff! i'm sure there are many arguements for the whole pure-blood/part human thing relfecting race issues... but i can hardly imagine rowling making fun of the physical traits of any black professors at hogwarts, as she does with flitwick.
-in the same train of thought, why make him such a magical creature? why not just a dwarf? we know not all "maladies" are automatically treated by magic(eg hermione's teeth, moody's scars, even mr weasley's badlness).

Well, i've sed my peice, but i agree - brooks would be good. i can think of plenty of black british actors of a certain age who will prob be offered the part in the same vien as so many of the cameoes done (personally i was shocked the gave lenny henry an MADEUP part, why not wait?)... not that i can think of anyone who captures shacklebolt better than broks right now. still trying.
