KRS-One is Brimming With Anger (and Acronyms)

KRS is always such an entertaining read, there's really nothing for me to add here:

Angry At 'Devious' Record Label, KRS-One Halts Sales Of New LP

"...This is insane, this is insane, this is so egregious, this is so devious," KRS-One fumed on Monday, angry at Koch Records' plan to release an album by him called Kristyles. The Bronx battle king, alleging that the record Koch was putting out not only did a disservice to him as an artist and a businessman, but that it was an affront to hip-hop culture as a whole, won a court injunction on Monday to stop its release.

"They don't have the full album," KRS explained. "They have stuff that I wasn't even putting on the album. I have no idea what's on the album [Koch put together]. I don't know what the artwork looks like, I don't know what the album credits look like, I don't know nothing. What they did was go behind my back and release the album. I got word just in the nick of time last week. I got my legal team together and we slapped them with a court order to cease the distribution and the pressing and manufacturing of this album..."

...KRS-One said he's still working on his album, which he plans on calling The Kristyle, and trying to secure appearances from Dirt McGirt and Wesley Snipes. But ODB and Snipes aren't the only things missing from the version Koch has assembled; the disc also lacks KRS' tribute to Jam Master Jay.

"Do they care about the death of Jam Master Jay?" he continued. "Oh, you mean to tell me that the fake album you're putting out right now, you omitted KRS-One's tribute to Jam Master Jay? Oh no, no, no. That's ridiculous. That's wack. This is a problem. This ain't about no money, this ain't about me not selling a record, this is about principle. We cannot allow these record companies to dictate to us how we are going to present hip-hop to the world."

KRS-One also said he's upset about Koch's naming the disc Kristyles rather than The Kristyle, which he explained is an acronym for "To have everything, keep radiating in spirit through your love everyday..."

Koch Records obviously didn't know who they were dealing with...apparently MC's aren't the only ones who act like they don't know.

Whats interesting about this whole situation is that not only is Koch notorious for picking up has been artists, they then have the nerve to distribute them wrong. Every rapper Koch has is in my opinion has one foot out the door, or from a group that has disbanded that moved a lot of units in the past.

Then they have the nerve to market them wrong.

Case in point, that clown from the hot boyz (chopper?)album doing well (true) but from another group. Grand Puba, the worst album I've heard in about 6 years. Inspectah Deck wont go gold, if he does it will be because the label bought half of the units. Dont quote me but I think G Rap has a deal with Koch when that Rawkus situation fell through, and we all know how that album sold.

Koch needs to re-think their entire hiphop situation because what they THOUGHT was that quick cash-in from the KRS/NELLY situation has really backfired. The album is taking too long, so they put it upon themselve and their CRACKPOT 20something staff and probably had them pick the best tracks.

Jut please no more K. Parker Beats.

I am not sure what Koch Records business plan is. I am old school and I have been a long time KRS fan so I buy his stuff no matter what label he is on. I have to agree that their marketing is horrible. Do their artists even get to make decent videos? I havent seen any. As far as the comments above about who will and will not go gold is silly. In my opinion most of the Platinum and Gold selling artists arent creative or talented. They just have huge record lables behind them to market their ignorant sterotypical ni66a music. Groups like KRS, Public Enemy and other true lyracist with something to say never go platinum. The closest we have now is Talib Kweli and I'm not sure he will go gold, definitely never platinum even though the kid is nice. Its a shame that in Hip-Hop, which started out and should still be "underground or urban" music is now being measured by how many 13 or so year old white kids buy their songs. Lets be honest to go platinum or even gold you have to sell to young surburban white kids. I'm not racist but I do have diferent tastes than some lil white girl in junior high school that loves Nelly, Eminem, Camron, Birdman, etc...That audience will like whatever is put on MTV with a nice video and gets air play. To say a artist isnt hot becuase they are not gold or platinum is saying you are not hot because white teenagers dont like your music. Hip hop is at a stage now where "legends" should still be able to make music and not be disrespected cause they arent the latest fad and monkey dancing on MTV this year. Next year there will be someone new on MTV. The legends just keep making music for their true fans. If thats only a couple of hundred thousand units so be it. If a rapper doesnt sell millions and talk "bling, bling" he is washed up? Is it the same in rock? Or do rock bands get to tour around out of the main stream and have their fans still support them? Think about it, Labels exploit black rappers and make the public think that if you are on MTV and the radio plays you 30 times a day you are hot, if not you are washed up. Bottom line is when Hammer was out he outsold Krs, When Vanilla Ice was out he outsold KRS, Tone-Loc, Jah Rule, Nelly, etc. I say wait till they no longer have a top 10 single out and see how many fans they have. We already know about hammer lets wait and see about Nelly and Jah Rule. He got booed off the stage already at summer jam! Jah Rule who was platinum many times can't even show his face now a days. Krs and many others like him tour and put on great shows without a top 10 hit in years by displaying true skill and talent.

Krs-One is still paving the way, fresh for 2003, my my sistas and brothers. He says that his music is free, but if you want the Cd cover and things, then you can buy it, and if you like it then you would want to buy it, by selling The Kristyle for only $10 he is once again setting a fresh style. After his 2001 Sneak Attack album, I read an article that said, "Look out for rappers with 'I will make it' type songs" and sure enough Nas brings out 'I can' in 2002. Again, an example of the Blastmaster paving the way.
I love HipHop, big ups to Krs-One, and I can't wait to here his new album. peace.

We just opened for KRS-one in San Diego and don not believe that he has one foot out the door. As a matter of fact, KRS-one is a legend and a pioneeer of rap and to speak ill of him is to speak ill of all that is hip hop. We should all be proud to have been able to hear him and relate with the old school style.

Thanks KRS, the gig in SD was awesome!

I don't care if KRS sells 10 copies, There is no one who can touch him. KRS One is what Hip Hop is all about, He brings all the elements together. No matter who mtv or bet say who's hot or not, As long as the Underground is around, We know the real deal. Kris, If you read this post, Please leave Koch records as soon as possible. You are smart enough to operate your own lable and put out real Hip Hop. Oh yeah, Please work with Primo again, You two are a perfect combination!

Too bad people are all about the hype. Otherwise, no one would know about a country-fied Nelly with with his "I can't get a regular job" over-done grill. KRS embodies what it means to be true to one's self and art. Who cares if white kids won't propel him into platinum. The real audiences understand, and are down with the templeofhiphop!

Max Jerome.

Let's get real here. KRS is the Ali of Hip Hop. Act
like you know.

About Koch releasing the wrong version. I bought the
thing today before I heard about this unofficial release. How does this happen? It's October. Did they ever release "The Kristyle'? Does it have the
ODB and JMJ tracks?

I'm going to take Kris's advice at this point and
download it online. Middle Finger goes out to Koch!

I hope KRS gets on some type of label that does not
pull this shady business if that type of label even
exists.

Fresh for 2003............ YOU SUCKER!!

His lyrics speak truth...like a "Griot" as we say in french. A story teller sent from the ages. As for peoples comments about marketing, it is not about the marketing and record sales for some artists..its about the music, its about the movement, the origins of hip hop..and the origins of this style of music. It has always been this way from him from back in the day with BDP, with the beats, strong, true, and militant to some and gospel to others. I wish some artists would do the same but since money seems to be attacking Hip Hop, it reflects on our culture, and it has done us damage. Merci Bon Bieu for KRS, much love.Damballah is proud i'm sure. Let us NOT to forget about the movement.

I agree wholeheartedly with Jerrold (7/2/03) and all others who support the blastmaster, KRS-One. He is indeed a legend and I can tell you that 30 years from now, KRS-One will still be able to rip a mic. The question was asked that is the "hot" and "washed up" thing with an artist only an issue in Hip-Hop? The answer is YES!!! White folks still go and see classic rock groups like Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones who have been doing for 30 and 40 years. Why is that we do not praise Hip-Hop artists who paved the way? It's definitely the "crab syndrome" through and through! I can guarantee all haters that in 10-15 years from now, Birdman, Nelly and the other fly-by-night artists will be a distant memory. I still support KRS-One is all he does and I will continue to buy his music regardless of how many units are sold until HE decides he no longer wants to make music. Respect those who came before! Peace!

Posted by: Kamariya at April 9, 2004 02:55 PM

Y'all people are blind...you follow krs like blind sheep...do you people even know he is ripping off artists he is supposed to be helping?
Do an internet search on "EOD" and you'll see what I mean....I used to think like you, that KRS was the master....now I see him for the money grabbing control freak that he really is. Peace.

Posted by: Steez at July 17, 2004 10:37 AM

I gotta agree with Steez! I was around them during the tour that E.O.D talks about. KRS-one made artists pay him $100 each to audition for a tour spot. Then after auditions were over he flipped the script.

KRS told the winners if they can't afford to travel, then they needed to stay home.

Posted by: Mecca at July 23, 2004 03:12 PM

Don't get it twisted. This can E.O.D. is worse than KRS if not just as bad. First he's using his own company to hustle his hip hop career and using the names of dead and career dead rappers to get his name out there. Half of the articles or press he's getting...interviews, etc. are a result of his company. He runs the site where they originate from. Bronx born, but has lived in Florida since he was a young buck. I'm not hating...but I hate to see him manipulate minds, manipulate KRS's name, and manipulate you readers. Last year he put together a hip hop conference in which he said there would be 1000 attendees, A&Rs and industry executives, etc.. There were like 120 people there and a bunch of cats that coordinate street teams for record labels. He had people pay up to $100 dollars to attend and shine in front of label names. So...don't get it twisted. E.O.D. may be pissed that he ain't get paid...but he's definitely raping other cats who depend on him to get them shine. He's just upset that he got played at his own game.

One.

phentermine If my interlocutor desires to convince me that Jupiter has inhabitants, and that his description of them is accurate, it is for him to bring forward evidence in support of his contention. The burden of proof evidently lies on him; it is not for me to prove that no such beings exist before my non-belief is justified, but for him to prove that they do exist before my belief can be fairly claimed. Similarly, it is for the affirmer of God's existence to bring evidence in support of his affirmation; the burden of proof lies on him.
