Street Incredulity

An interesting take on sports writers' attempts to judge the "street credibility" of NBA stars:

Learning the nuances of street cred takes time

Whenever a tide of hip-hop terminology begins to flow from the mouths of people who have no connection with the culture, it can either be a blessing or a curse - a blessing in that a certain level of acceptance has been reached and a curse in that the term is now subject to be used out of context.

All of which brings me to the case of the term, "street cred" (credibility).

Personally, I can count the number of times I've ever used this term on one hand, yet for the past two weeks it's been all over the sports media.

I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's beginning to get its fair share of overuse...

I think there's a presumption by sports reporters, especially white sports reporters, that Allen Iverson sells shoes because he's got "street cred" or that "and 1" is making a killing because they are "street" and what is in this presumption (the same presumption people make when say "ghetto" or "urban") is that it goes hand in hand with "crime" or "thuggery" and that the terms are interchangeable.

What I find more depressing is that all of those things are becoming (and maybe it's just my rose colored glasses letting me think that 'becoming' is the right term) synonimous with "hip hop."

People can't even decide whether or not hip hop includes a dash or not and already reporters that have little connection to the culture are deciphering what it means to the masses without any sense that they might not know shit about what they are talking about.

Sigh.

It's probably because when the story broke all the white sports writers called up Wilborn trying to get the colored man's perspective.

damn i hate to say this, but um, and i'm black, and i'm somewhat of a journalist, but um, damn spit it out, damn, i have used street cred quite a few times. i think when i use it though, i'm being, um, sarcastic. i've used it when talking about eminem and vanilla icel...more the latter than the former though. ok, whew, i've said it.

just an addendum, i don't think i've actually ever said it out loud though, it's just that i've writen it down on paper.
