Rakim Finally Gives Up on Aftermath

And thus Rakim joins the club of high profile Dr. Dre signings (Eve, Last Emperor, King T, who else?) who wound up languishing on the shelf for years, and finally dropped with nothing whatsoever to show for their time.

Disappointing but not surprising, after seeing the project drag on for so long. At least he and Dre actually spent time in the studio and made an attempt, which is more than can be said for some previous casualties. When I went to Gangstarr's listening party at the now defunct D&D studios, Premier mentioned that Rakim was asking him to come over to Cali and help with the album, because Aftermath didn't know how provide the proper sound for him.

Rakim Leaves Aftermath Entertainment

Legendary rapper Rakim has split with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment record label, due to what Rakim's management deemed "creative differences."

"Rakim and Aftermath have mutually decided to part ways," Rakim's manager Zach Katz told AllHipHop.com. "Rakim is presently in talks with three powerhouse record companies."

Recently at the BET Awards, Rakim presented with Baby from Cash Money Records and boasted that his album would be in stores by the end of the summer on Aftermath.

MTV reported last week that Dre and Rakim had finished 16 songs and were working to finish seven more, before picking a single to release.

"He can bring the best out of me, and I want to make sure that I bring the best out of him," Rakim told MTV of Dre. "He goes in the studio from 3 [p.m. and] goes home 6, 7, 8 in the morning, so to me, that's all right. My man wants to work, so let's get it poppin'."

The legendary rapper had been signed to Aftermath for almost three years and fans have been anticipating the release of Oh My God, despite the constant delays.

Ok, now somebody hurry up and get these outtakes on MP3.

tsk tsk tsk. Andre Young (the Dr. Dre I acknowledge made a gem called "Knowledge Me" with the Original Concept and is on the radio in NYC) obviously has a problem, and don't mistake it with his 'creative' process. When one refuses tracks by DJ Premier for his artist(Rakim), there is a problem. Taking one's time to perfect a beat is one thing; leaving the God hanging only to have a subpar(probably incomplete) track to associate himself with on Mathers' movie soundtrack is another.

Furthermore, Young's music that he claims that he is working so hard to perfect is not even as original, or creative, as one may think. DJ Premier at least uses the "chopping up" method on a majority of his tracks, thus showing creativity and an attempt to elude sample clearance issues. Andre straight-jacks old tunes, loops them(at that!) and if one isn't careful, she'd think that funky beat(and they are, for the most part) is the result of his exclusively creative genius. How many times has dude been sued for using uncleared samples, basslines and such? And this guy had the nerve to have sued Napster a few years ago claiming copyright violations!

Is it perhaps karma? He didn't fess up and apologize for beating up Dee Barnes years ago, so he 'got no wins in mi casa.' He is a fraudulent guy, along with the majority of 'rap' actors who consider this the rap "game", and don't respect the culture of hip-hop, the art of rap music and, literally, the blood, sweat, and tears that formed and shaped it.

And another thing, some rap producers (like the hallowed DJ Premier) should really stop moaning when crate diggers divulge the artist and name of a sampled song. If Guru said that "rap is an art-- you can't own no loops", then why can't producers give up props to the people who created the track? In other words, they are taking, but what are they giving back? How about credit, at least? Stop bogarting!

this is what happens when your friends don't make beats. why doesn't mr. rakim just buy some alchemist, premo, and pete rock beats? honestly, i think rakim has generally lagged in the beat department. i mean, his best production was a coldcut remix. is he waiting for handouts or something??

Posted by: Eric at July 17, 2003 02:09 AM

It would have been wonderful to actually hear what Dre and Ra were cooking up, but it may actually benefit Ra to go back to a more East Coast oriented beats. Ra is a grimy, street to the core, hip hop ledgend, west coast funk just wouldn't fit.

Posted by: Kobe Berg at July 18, 2003 06:27 PM

lets just hope this new LP will have got passed the production sins of his last 2 mainly the master. the only decent production on that was DJ Premiers and that wasnt his usual neck snapping skills. it wud b nice 2 c wat dre and Ra were doin but i doubht Dre will let Ra keep the beats. i think premier shud produce Ra's whole album and yer deff sum Pete Rock i got so addicted to the when im flowin beat that was sick, especially the piano loop that was perfect for Ra's flow. so all we can do is hope it will b a solid album. c'mon Ra bring it this time.

One of hiphop's greatest poets(emcees,in my
opinion was denied an opportunity to express
wisdom,consciousness,and excellent wordplay due
to the desire of Andre Young's quest for radio
airplay and promoting rappers that express violent
imagery. How is it that Aftermath's distributor
(Interscope)have 4 Eminem records released and
become the symbol of excellence according to
the mainstream maedia? 50 Cent having had a CD
where commerciality,misogyny,and violent imagery
being spoonfed to the masses while one of the
greatest emcees having bveen signed on Aftermath
for three years gets no consideration.Seems like
a deliberate attempt to silence, now "the R" is
free!!

People tend to forget but if you will pick up your Eric B & Rakim Albums and see it was produced by, you guesed it... Eric B & Rakim. Ra knows what he wants in a record as far as sound goes. I was really optimistic about how this aftermath record would sound but real talk people, we know that there would be some compromise with Rakim In this age of music. Do you think Jimmy Iovine (C.E.O of Interscope) would let Ra do a "Let the Rythim Hit Em" Album without the average club songs? No!!! this is 2003 fool!! Although right now I am bumping P.E Bum rush The Show on G.P, industry cats as well as kids 20 and under would not have any idea who Rakim is. I could go on many tangents on hip hop with Ra in mind but I will go on one... Fuck MTV for spelling Rakim as Rakeem...(Backstage Pass 50 cent)

Posted by: curt at July 20, 2003 04:32 AM

Rakim is also my fav Mc closely followed by Jeru the Damaja. If u read the rakim interviews on thaformula.com rakim says he actually produced 95% of eric b and rakims stuff. large professer tought him how 2 use the sp1200 or wateva that drum machine is called and so rakim produced the whole of let the rythem hit em all eric b did was do the cuts and scrathes. i think rakim could go completely by himself producing his own shit which wud b gd

Well its too bad that Rakim has fallen out of Aftermath but if you really think about this, I think Rakim Allah is better without Dre. I'm not hating on Dre but his beats are dope no doubt about it but I normally get bored of them after a Year or so. I was listening to Gangstarr-The Ownerz and fuck!!...those tracks are the BOMB!!..I've always felt Primo...Just listen to Nas Is Like, MCs act like they dont know, Full Clip, Same Team No games, Discipline,Above The Clouds.....Those are some classic tracks No Doubt! and I think The Track maketh The MC!...In other words The perfect duo would be "DJ Premier And Rakim" not "Dr. Dre and Rakim" coz Rakim is real street, real hardcore, real science and ofcourse REAL EAST COAST coz thats where u find real hip hop!

Posted by: VinnieFromAfrica at August 5, 2003 09:27 AM

Ooohh... I got it: Rakim + RJD2 !!

Or how about Ra and Revolution?
Rakim with Ritchy Pitch?
The R. meets J. Rawls?
RKM vs RZA?
Might we hear Rakim backed by the Roots?

It seemed like quite a coincidence at the time.

Mayn I was so damn shocked to hear Ra Allah talkin' bout doin' stuff with that commercial mogul, Dre. Rakim's too dope to be gettin' so much commercial concerns, cuss I know Andre's mainly concerned about gains...not name. Y'all can imagine how happy i feel now.
Rakim is G-O-D

Posted by: Endo_ibn_Akbar at August 23, 2003 01:19 PM

Ra & Rza would be perfect . Ra's new C.D should be produced by RZA , Premo, Pete Rock,Lord Professor, & Havoc.

I think I know why most of you judge him the way you do,because his lirics are the best thing to happen to hiphop. because you have to be from the era toknow the era ,1983-1990s the lirics is hiphop not music!!!music is dance liricsare is meanning[definition ,description of of `` RAKIM "

Since I was seven years old I was bumpin Dre and I respect everyone of his attributes. To leave Aftermath is the dumbest shit I've ever heard or read. When I get my career started Aftermath records is what I want to be repin.

All the luv for DRE and his accomplishments

Posted by: Unique at September 12, 2003 07:42 PM

This has been a hot topic for a minute. However in reading an interview with Ra from http://www.thaformula.com, he mentioned that he did a large majority of the production. My thing is, get someone to program some drums, find some loops and, as G O D, "do for self". Hell, make it an all-righteous affair. Get joints from Mathmatics, RZA, Lord Jamar, Ayatollah etc. Get Kane and let us see true talent together.

Posted by: Shabazz at October 5, 2003 01:54 AM

"Paid In Full" was real hip hop, yet commercial! I imagine that as the model for "Oh My God". It reminds one of the fullness we all strive for in the studio; it's not just record sales, that's the pressure from the office (they wouldn't care if they were selling dishes), but naturally the desire is to earn a living doing what you love doing! I cannot imagine Dre putting Ra off intentionally, if anything I would venture a guess that Rakim was tired of delays due to Dre's other obligations. As a producer myself, I can completely understand Dre's desire to work with the best and greatest now that the opportunity to reach out both creatively and financially is his. I can't wait to hear "Oh My God," and I would hope that Dre decides to collaborate with a few other old schoolers like Melle Mel, Big Daddy Kane, and of course Kool G Rap!

Posted by: Power of One at October 29, 2003 08:20 PM

Rakim's lyrics should be bound in a leather cover and sold in book stores everywhere. He is a rare MC who wastes no words, nor syllables. Oh My God is the perfect title, but Dre was not the one. My boy Jeruz does production at Aftermath and he divulged just how little production Dre does. He is mainly an excellent ear for commercial success, but does not create most of the tracks. Ra's album would be a classic with Premier's production, Ra's production and guest joints with Nas, Kane, G. Rap, and even Busta (on some righteousness, of course). Honestly, I was looking forward to Rakim rhyming next to Eminem, so the masses could identify the originator as opposed to the imitator. One.

Posted by: G Allah at October 30, 2003 10:32 AM

ra should hook up with preemz, preemz is real ill and ra has some sick ass flows, the both of them would just light it up and just make a hip hop classic

Posted by: weeps at October 30, 2003 02:55 PM

all praise do to the god RA....IT DON'T MATTER BECAUSE THIS CAT REFUSES TO SLIP BECAUSE HIS NIKE'S GOT GRIP, HE STANDS ON HIS OWN TO FEET AND HE'S ALWAY'S EQUIP....PRAISE HIM 1.

Posted by: nitti at November 1, 2003 12:11 PM

Maybe if Dre wasn't forever kissing Eminem and 50 Cent's ass, he would have put forth the effort to collaborate effectively for Rakim's CD. Dre has been trying to get with Rakim for years. Now since he is in the position to work with the greatest MC of all time, he treats him like a punk!!! You gets no props in my book, Dre!!!

Posted by: EReed at November 3, 2003 11:29 AM

As long as ive been waiting for that album to drop, what 2 years at least? im kinda glad he's off aftermath, i was sketchy about the crew to begin with...especially after the gaymile track. dont you think at least 7 tracks would be similar with trying to get club bangers for tha god?
and thats crazy, i had no clue he did most of the beatz...
rjd2 would be insane...if he took it back underground and hooked up with guys like the eastern conference! i dunno. jaylib? vast aire, if he got with them...i'd like that shit...
but again i dont want to see too many collabos neither...mad props hopefully he gets it out sooner than later

Posted by: Cornflake at December 3, 2003 02:33 AM

people always surprised that dre doesn't produce every track that comes outta aftermath. anybody can produce a dope beat, i heard plenty, but that doesn't mean it's getting radio play. dre don't have to sit in the studio digging for gold, he can pay other niggaz to do that shit for him. wake up. thats business. he's worth about 50+ million dollars. he's got the connections to get radio play, he's got a track record of success, he's dr dre for christ sake. its called capitalism. look at p diddy, nobody say nothing about him, he never done a thing in his life, but nobody ever question how little he does.

Posted by: pete at December 15, 2003 07:48 AM

I Think Rakim did the right thing by leaving dre because now a days hiphop is fuckin wack and Emcees act like they dont know. Back in the day hiphop was RAW!!! hiphop was REAL!!! hiphop was DJ SCRATCHING AND SAMPLED VOICES!!!. DJ Premier did the scratching for pitchblacks song "Its All Real" now that was real hiphop. Hiphop is tired now because nobody drops that raw hiphop music or that scratching and sampled voices stuff anymore. If all the hiphop artists saw stuff rakims way I gurantee all these EastCoast rappers would of came out right now. This is January 1 2004 and hiphop has the same shit everyday and im sick of it until hiphop brings back those days when rakim and ericb dropped that Raw and real rap or when Bigdaddycane dropped raw then ill start liking hiphop. So as long as these wack down south rappers and these same as videos and same as songs keep coming on hiphop is wack.

Posted by: DiScIpLeZ at January 1, 2004 06:26 PM

Hip hop is now wack, who took the black out of that, who turned hip hop into pop, who poured the white over black. who's freestyles are good but really all a talk, who should have been shot instead of biggie and pac, who do you see today talking a bout fags? i mean gays, who do you dissin' there moms and still getting praised, who do you see being comparing to pac claiming to be the illiest, who do you see today as the modern day elvis. The beats are whack and doesn't satify my soul, i turn the radio off cause my bloods already cold, the only man i feel who spits lyrics through his physics steel is no other than, the illest man Allah RAKIM. Dre day is gone makeveli spoke the truth, they're willing to sacrificing our souls for platinum and gold instead for out black youths, Rakim Allah speaks from the Gods above, you can never lose respect and the love from the man who created HARD its still Rakim Allah.

Posted by: unknown prophet at January 14, 2004 03:58 PM

This was anticipated as the greatest collabs (dre and ra) probably of all time. I was too excited, but after reading the source issue Oct 03. I realised dre is only after money, if he has to do real work and roll up his sleeves then he'll punk out. Plus all his core behind the scenes people makin it happen are'nt getting paid or seeing true credit for work, production or otherwise. he'll take credit for shit he never does. Better the cards fell for the god this way than the god faliin for the cards. Dre could'nt see ever a dollar from me as a consumer.

Posted by: lockke at January 25, 2004 11:00 PM

I believe Rakim should move on and find a label that will let Rakim be Rakim. He can try some labels from the south. How about dej jam or koch records maybe J records.Hip hop need Rakim, Slick Rick, KRS 1 , Chuck D. and Ice Cube to get this game straighten out.

Peace be unto the original man of the planet Earth. Yo! word is bond The God hour is here everyone. Rakim is an intelligent cat who knows what he wants. He's universally respected by all real hip-hop enthusiasts. Anyone who has an affinity for cerebral lyrics and passages with depth can appreciate that The God is looking for more than just monetary compensation. Rakim needs tracks that accentuate his voice and slick delivery. Dre has the ability to provide son with what he needs but this move he made wasn't done without forethought. Rakim will get the production he needs to remain a successful lyricist, artist and mentor for hip-hop lovers everywhere. All yall heads be cool and respect to Rakim Allah - One

reading all the comments.. being from the west.. loving dre's beats though they are repetitive, i must say that it is too bad they did not release the album. this is 2005, and i've found some of the unpublished songs online, which are actually very good. see, the thing is, dre is only one person. he's producing shit for 5 artists, not to mention featured songs in other people's cd's. you can't blame him. and of course the media is trying to shut up rakim. y you think the truest mc's are underground or barely mainstream like common and mos def? i say dre's still the greatest producer though some beats are repetitive. but hey, why change the style if you found the trick?
and one last thing- east coast's got a lot of good stuff going, but west coast rocks the hardest. like the game says, "gangbanging, that's l-a sh!t" dre is on the top of the game, and that shit is not going to change.
