Just Blaze or not Just Blaze: The Final Chapter

Em vs. Benzino? Michael Jackson vs. his little friend? These petty squabbles pale in comparison to the epic battle that was waged here on this website between Just Blaze (world famous hip-hop producer) and DJ Dubb (who claims the Just Blaze posting here is an impostor). The drama started here, then it escalated here, and I decided I better put a stop to this or one day Oliver Stone would be making a movie about it, with Kevin Costner playing DJ Dubb on the trail of the great Just Blaze conspiracy.

So after some investigation, tonight I found myself on the way to Battery Sound Studios in Chelsea, thinking to myself "either I'm on my way to meet Just Blaze, or Benzino saw how I've been clowning him and set me up to get Suge-Knighted." Here are the results of my expedition:

The interview (part 1)
The photographic evidence

Basically, either this was the real Just Blaze, or somebody spent an shitload of money on that John Woo Face-Off surgery.

After clearing that up we kept the tape rolling for another half hour and touched on a wide variety of topics, including Jay-Z's real plans for his next release, and the recent controversy over his "PSA" beat that uses the same sample as Black Moon's "Stay Real". I'll be posting the rest of the interview real soon.

So thanks again to DJ Dubb for making this interview possible, and like I told Just there are mad other people I want to meet, so maybe next week you can post about how you met Salma Hayek at Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles or something, and we can get her up in here.

For the record.

Thanks for ending the beef.

This is a classic case of "Damage Control".

When I first read (the original JB Post) I knew it was him.

His entire script reads/sounds just like his write ups.

As far as the pic goes, he was just the DJ for that MTV Battle, so its definitely verified.

Since my show is located in Wayne and touches the Paterson area, I constantly get calls to play his music.

Dont let these super-producers fool you, they are internet hiphop/underground/geeks just like the rest of us.

I recently had Ron Browz on my show, and he was shocked how much love the low key 50,000 a track-super producers get, on University Radio.

It just so happens they realized where the money is.

Redemption heh.
Really quickly tho, thnks 2 jsmooth for actually believing me n takin up the offer 2 come meet me which he didn't have 2 do,
Next, hopefully this will make the rumor starterd think b4 the start sumthin up
Third, I don't like the fact tht ppl are referring to this as beef, like I said, this is cyberspace, not the hood. Guess tht makes dubb a 'virtual wanksta'
To those tht believed me, good looks and to the dude that said he was me and said sumthin 2 the effect of 'ill get dmx on u myself, nigger' on the previous forum, get a life dog, pls. Do urself and ur family a favor. Anyway, on that note I'm leavin after this song, its been real yall! O yeah. Dude is kinda right, I just happened 2 be an underground head who realized not only whr the money was, but that music is music. different music touches different people and if I was blessed enough 2 be able 2 expand into different areas, i wasn't going to limit myself. But like I said on the interview, for every 'cant let u go' ima give yall a 'u don't kno', 'bitches n sisters', 'show u how 2 do this, 'stick 2 the script. Etc. I do realize that once u get a few radio hit however, ur not that same producer anymore, ur mainstream, even if u continue 2 drop 'street credible' records along the way, guess its just part of the game. Makes me wonder tho. What if another 'underground' producer had happened 2 use the psa/stay real loop with another 'underground' artist as opposed 2 me n jay doin it.. Would It have been a big controversy? (Didn't even kno it was one, guess I AM out the loop a bit! Lol) my guess is it would have been chalked up 2 coincidence. I could be wrong but I gotta good gut feelin on tht 1. Anyway. Nuff ramblin, ill be here all night n miss out on the turkey. thnks 2 the believers again. One... On that note I'm leavin after this song ..

a few things here...jay smooth has lowered his integrity to the lowest level. He was and is the supposed just blaze posting on this site. the audio he played was recorded by him and a few of his friends, the photo is not evidence, because it is obviously a stock photo taken by a photographer. he went through great lengths and it did take him a few days to pull of his "miracle", but soon i will pull off a miracle of "my own"...and all will see that jay smooth himself is a fraud!!! the beef continues....and as far as the wanksta issue..well lets just hope for just blaze's sake it isnt him talkin like he ill..

Wow!! look im from the south los angeles area and have been reading all these posts, and i want to clear the air. DJ dubb is very well known in the LA area for 2 thangs 1) his gang ties, and 2) his record industry ties. but i am almost positive this isnt dj dubb, but i could be wrong. dubb (whos real name is jhante birchard) is not one to lie or make up some stupid shit . he is a huge hip hop fan and also a producer as well, so i know he possibly could be on the net posting , but highly unlikely. i am trying to reach the real dubb and verify this, so i will keep you guys posted. this could be an incident of someone taking the name of a neighborhood kingpin. (ala rapper 5o cent/ and the real drug kingpin 50 cent from brooklyn) dubb(the real dubb) was instrumental, along with atlanta falcons player bob whitfield, in getting ras kass his deal with priority(which he shouldnt be proud of) and owns a piece of patchwerk studios in atlanta. i cant see him bowing down to just blaze or being on his dick at all. dj dubb is a well connected rolling 20 crip..but i can say this, if it is him, (not much of a chance i think) and jay smooth did infact pull a stunt, hell proabably get charged up in a major way...so im going to find out the truth..and if the dubb on here is an impostor, the real dubb will rubb him out, and if he is telling the truth..well all hell will break loose!!!

Posted by: shawntee roseland at November 28, 2003 08:35 PM

This whole shit is kinda corny... This is the net and dudes be talkin bout beef n tryin to prove this n that... Dubb- give it up homie! I know/hope you got better things to do wit ya time than have "internet beef" bout seein some dude drinkin at some bar or whatever... haha

I figured I'd stop by n check the posts. I can't believe this clown. Aiight dubb u win this was all a scheme. I'm not just blaze n the real jay smooth was kidknapped by aliens 2 years ago and a fake was left in his place. Give the shit up already. If thr is in fact a real dj dubb, I'm hopin he catches wind of this n rubbs u out. Petty ass virtual thugs. The sad part is he really takes this seriously as 'beef'. sad, sad indeed... I'm done with u b... 1, jay holla

Posted by: jb at November 29, 2003 01:30 PM

Haha, DJ Dubb you are killing me. I'm on the air now, just got back from out of town, will address this later. Actually maybe I will just sit back and wait to see your "proof", that should be funny.

I'll post more of the interview soon, and people can judge for themselves. As for the photo, I'm flattered you think my shot is professional quality, but if you have been to our photo section or saw my JMJ tribute in Wax Poetics you should know I've got some skills in that arena.

Posted by: Jay Smooth at November 30, 2003 12:35 AM

the truth has been revealed. And the winner is??? okay, the "real" dj dubb says he aint the one..but says he has met just blaze on numerous ocassions in various locations..miyaga's (a night club)larabbee west recording studio,up at power 106fm, and at the magic show in las vegas.. with chris tracy, d-lo, and himself which he goes by big john. aint sure about the goodbar story..said he briefly had a conversation with def jam staff about the jay z shit...drumroll please....dum dum dum dum dum da!!!! and intrestingly enough all the shit about this jay z follow up, is indeed, the word(in otherwords the truth) up at def jam. as for the story regarding the just blaze encounter, he says he has explanation for that..in the form of his little brother lil dubb (aka ahmad birchard). who oddly enough is a runner at Jeremy larner entertainment. he says his brother had claimed to of met just blaze at a club here in LA recently but said all he said was "im big john's little brother" and just said "oh fo real, tell him i said whutup" and walked off. two days later, big john runs into just blaze at a studio in LA (where this production team THe Decepticonz he works with was doing some tracks for 24k) so oddly enough, blaze knows the real dj dubb, but the story was not true..it was dubb's little brother. ha ha..damn, all this shit for nothing. shoutouts to just blaze and to my nigga big john aka jhonte aka dj dubb

Wow that's some interesting info right there, Shawntee.

You know what else is interesting, Shawntee? My server logs the IP addresses of everyone who posts here. Your IP address is: 65.71.17.233

Guess what DJ Dubb's IP address is? Isn't that funny, it's the exact same one, 65.71.17.233

What a coincidence! You must have to spend a lot of money at the Goodbar, buying drinks for each of your multiple personalities.

IM BACK!!! the one and only notorious "rumor igniter"!!!! yes!!! ok,check it..so yall know the real...Just Blaze pulled my card!!! ha ha!! and i went as far as too involve my neighbors (the lovely roseland family-because i dont own a computer!!) but i feel very special that just blaze himself answered my posts...it is a wonderful feeling to have a producer of such prestige answer back to some shit that i thought would be hilarious to write about. The ever growing "hip hop rumor mill" allows people to write whatever they'd like and becasue of the ignorance of most hip hop listeners and fans, they will believe anything you throw there way.
i proved this, and also received an A in my social cognition class at USC. This was my goal, to have some believe me and for some to resist the belief...but very much to my suprise someone came in to the picture suggesting they were the person i was gossiping about. so i responded, and quite cleverly i may add, and defended my "LIE"..so i tried hard to win my argument, but it seems someone was just better at frontin' then me. The posts were clever, and the interview itself was classic, however i was dissapointed that it took you so long to catch my IP address..i will say this though..there is a real DJ DUBB, that i happen to know, so i felt it would be interesting to throw him into the mix because of two reasons ..1) he actually is well connected in the entertainment industry and 2)has definetely met the real just blaze (ive seen the photgraphs to prove it), so i felt he would be the perfect set up, the best fall guy for the scenario. as for me, i shall remain infamous, and continue my evil plan to decay the minds of "cockriding" hip hop fans, whose dedication to the artform has made them extremely vulnerable. so with that being said, when you hear a rumor, pause for a second, then ask yourself, could it be the truth, or is that just DJ DUBB, up to his same ol' bullshit again?
peace and nappiness,
mista ?

Posted by: jb at December 5, 2003 09:25 AM

i am so pathetic..but so are you "jb"..you seriously hang around these message boards?? dont you have anything better to do?? like make some tracks? anyway, how did everything with doc dre go? did he pick up some more heat for the detox album? or were you too busy responding to my posts? str8 up though...we will be crossing paths soon. it will be quite interesting when i reveal my identity to everyone...including you. then we can have a good laugh or better yet, maybe a cry.
the evil genius...
ohh..by the way..i just thought id say that one of my favorite tracks you ever did was for my favorite rapper of all time...big punisher.."off wit da head" from the yeeah baby!!! lp..and "mach" says whatsup..

Posted by: dj dubb at December 5, 2003 07:10 PM

ALright, let me be serious for a second and examine this whole situation. floss says this wasnt funny?? this whole thing was complete fun, and very good for this website in itself. Jay smooth will have to be the first to admit that traffic has been "UP" of late. This whole "beef" (which never was one by the way-just an internet game of bullshit chess) was classic!!! ask yourself , in the vein of the intro to "what more can i say" .."We're you not entertained??"
the bullshit is much deeper than appears. Why would one start a rumor? could it be to feel that importance?? to be superior in knowledge of all things that are hip hop?? isn't that the essence of hip hop fans(which mostly are made up of amatuer artists and producers who will never have a chance of tasting the glory of hip hop infamy-of being a jay-z or a just blaze) to be noticed, or to seem superior to there fellow self proclaimed "heads". The examples are everywhere..there are hip hop sites and magazine articles dedicated to hip hop rumors. That is the pure nature of society itself..sensationalism and overhyped bally hooed non sense. what i did was no diffrent than anyone else, except the person i begat the rumor with, happened to be a "head" himself, and countered back with his claims..which also happens quite a bit and never ends up being the "real" individual in question. and in my defense, this was created as a "project", i had never before started a rumor until posting here..and jay can tell you i tried to start various other rumors as well, but this seem to be the only one people were interested in...."Is JAY Z really retiring????". so i began with what sounded credible, industry garb...blah blah blah..it flew..until...who else responds??? Just Blaze..coincidence??? what if i had said kanye west instead??? this rumor would proabably be flying all over the net and into the streets. my goal was to get this "rumor" as far as to jigga himself, which will not happen due to just blaze's intervention. also, im not some internet head who has nothing better to do..I, myself, am an established producer in hip hop and r&b... .no games...no more fun with the roc a fella boys anymore...ill leave it dead. because i am in the words of justin "PATHETIC". HA HA HA
HOLLA BACK AT YALL..
MISTA ?

OKAY, FINALLY A REAL Q? FOR JUST BLAZE?
I KNOW YOUR A DIE HARD AKAI MPC SERIES FAN FOR PRODUCTION? MPC 2000XL, 4000, ETC...
(YOU NEED YOUR MPC STYLIZED BY FORAT..DONT BS YA SELF..WWW.FORAT.COM)
HAVE YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIDGET WITH THE ROLAND MV-8000??
IT IS WONDERFUL!!! IT HONESTLY BLOWS AWAY THE 4000 SERIES..I HAVENT TOUCHED IT SINCE I GOT THIS, THOUGH IM STILL FAITHFUL TO MY 2000 XL..THE MV-8000 SUPPORTS MPC2000 DISK FORMATS OR YOU CAN JUST USE THE CD DRIVE TO IMPORT WAV./AIFF OR AKAI FORMAT SOUNDS...IF YOU STORE YOUR KITS AND SAMPLES ON PC OR MAC, YOU CAN TRANSFER THRU FIREWIRE OR USB..AND JUST DRAG AND DROP...YOU CAN ALSO RUN A SHITLOAD OF MIDI TRACKS..( I THINK UP TO 128)ALSO IF YOUR'E WORKING ON A BEAT, ALL THE SAMPLES CAN BE TIME STRETCHED IN REAL TIME(MIDI AND AUDIO)..I KNOW THE 4000 CAN DO THIS A LIL BIT..BUT ADMIT THE 4000 IS A LITTLE "BUGGY" AND THE CONVERTERS SUCK!! ANYWAY..JUST THOUGHT ID ASK!!!!
HA HA HA HA
SEE YA SOON

Shaking my head.

This is funny.

Yo Jay Smooth, you may have to take this post down and retire it. Call it "The Black Post." Or better yet, put it in the Hiphopmusic's "Blog of Fame" section. In fact, send this post to Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Along with James Brown, this post (and this blog) also needs to be honored for it's contribution to hip-hop journalism and American culture.

Now can we move on? I mean, we (the readers) know the deal already. Cat's out the bag and identities have been blown.

No need to save face.

But it's great reading though.

Posted by: Trent at December 8, 2003 03:52 PM

i wish it would end..but it can not. people fall for this okey doke non sense all the time, case in point..my okey doke i originally posted had folks fooled with no kind of evidence, until someone claiming to be just blaze responded. i am abot 75% sure that this is really Justin on here (havent had the opportunity to holla at him yet) but there is always the chance that it isn't..the evidence presented isnt insurmountable in any way. Have you actually heard just blaze's voice before?? how you know what he sounds like?? do you know how easy it is to front like that?? i know..people pretend to be me all the time (more on that later...) it is easy..the photographic evidence?? i can cut and paste a pic of numerous pictures off the net and say "yo thats such and such chillin wit me on such and such date."..it would of been more convincing if jay was in the picture..so honestly im not convinced entirely this is justin..but we will know the truth soon..i promised a miracle..and its a miracle youll get..
no need to save face, im not trying to save face..this is all in good fun and humor to me, plus the fans seem to get a kick out of all this...
sincerly,

Just, I've been listening to the PSA joint a lot lately. Is that you doing the monologues on there? Stupid question? I don't know...I'm don't think I've heard either speech before. By the way, if you could work with any one artist out there, dead or alive (or both), who would it be?

Posted by: jb at December 11, 2003 05:14 AM

working on it...if you feeling the mv-8000, roland will just want you to give em a quote "im amazed by the mv-8000...or something to that effect..but i wouldnt want you to hurt your akai ties..the msrp on the mv-8000 is 1999.99, relatively cheap for a baller like yourself..but i got a direct relationship with steve maffeo, so ill hook it up...when i send this to baseline, should i address the package to just blaze?? also, you know you never trademarked your name with the us patent and trademark office...not good, it only took me two weeks to get the TM on the name..for under $500, i own the trademark on JUST BLAZE...im selling it for $2500, if you know anyone who's interested??

Posted by: DJdubb at December 11, 2003 10:10 AM

well i did not mean to offend you nor do you need to act like that, just blaze. obviously i have not seen a magazine with you in it with your info except a vibe magazine on producers, i was just attempting to start a convo with you. my bad have a happy holiday

I'll blow out whatever you gotta offer wit my triton... n if you aint hear my name (S. Rage) in the game in a few years, you gon def. hear of Terrorist Peschi... his album is bein pressed right now and dude gon get signed off it... well raps goin down the shitter... but he might be on dj absolutes next cd so peep that he flows over one of fat joes beats... "gangsta" i believe it is... sooooo... to wrap this up, you really look like a homo homie... fall back

holla

Posted by: Con at December 12, 2003 12:52 AM

Dubb...you talk about the "Real" Just Blaze wouldn't have time to sit on here and write posts, but look at you??? You have time to be on here hating on him, then you turn around and start asking him for advise and then expect him to want to listen to the tape that you are going to send??? You should appreciate the fact that he is taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to the likes of you and make the most of it instead of wasting everyone's time being a HATER!!!

Posted by: FlyGirl at December 12, 2003 01:11 AM

the ppl hve spoken haha.. i have to say con... i do have a triton but no WAYYYYYYYY does it kill the roland sound modules. i gotta 1080 2080 3080 n 5080 n i love them death.. i use my triton for its percussion mostly.. it slaughters roland in that department.. unless you using the roland hpd-15 handsonic... triton strings suck tho...hmm i think i used to the triton on oh boy.. the monkey skulls patch. not that the trions bad at all.. but i prefer roland..

Posted by: jb at December 12, 2003 05:09 AM

You def. used it on Oh Boy.... I can jus tell by the beat... N aint sayin shit bout you n ya career cuz ya obviously more elevated than anybody here- but that beat/song got ya name heard more than anything else ya done! IMO tho... (that song was the hot shit at that time tho for real for real)I'm sayin i record (well basically used to) on a Roland 8 track CDX-1... n for 700 (display discount) i aint that happy wit it... but i gotta roland keyboard amp thats nice.. kc 500 i believe... im gettin acid 4.0 soon n i i'll check out those roland modules on ams.... I think the strings is aiight on the triton tho... i mean you can fuck wit em on "combine" wit master effects n all that shit... but before i had my triton i worked wit a 200 dolla radio shack board so....lol... what other boards you work wit? But on another note- Terrorist Peschi's albums gettin pressed up now so if you get that shit (the demo) def. listen to it! Duke is sick!

"If you could look inside my spot you might find/
Slugz for the snub, slugz for the nine, a snub n a nine/
A shitload of dimes n a couple of O's/
Then again you prolly wont find shit- ASSHOLE/
Is that sho' fo' sho' sho' nuff/
I aint no dumbfuck wit a name as stupid as 'hold my nuts'/
He said what- I did, so what, I'm grown up/
Plus my gun spits like it love to throw up/
-Peschi
lol.... duke is KILLIN it n thats some old shit! (Best of Peschi)
Jus warnin (aint really wanna put it like that tho) but dude def. spits it more gutta than 50 does n if anybody snatchin 50's spot in the game its Pesch....holla back tho

Posted by: Con at December 14, 2003 01:36 AM

I used that one triton patch on oh boy, everything else is mpc n roland. Not talking about roland products vs korg overall.. Haven't used enough of either, just talking about their sound module engines.. Neither complany changes them much from model to model.. Triton strings may sound good 2 u now but trust me.. Get yurself a roland module with the regular 16 bit orchestral card, or better yet a 5080 with the 24 bit string section card n ull c what I mean!

Posted by: jb at December 14, 2003 12:52 PM

Oh word, what percussion sounds do you use from the Triton? I have a triton here that I play with but I have trouble finding drum sounds I like on it.

Posted by: Jay Smooth at December 14, 2003 12:57 PM

dont really use the drum sounds.. just the percussion (bongos, congos, shakers, cowbells) they have a little bit less of a static, electronic feel to them than the roland ones do. if u need sum drums sounds jay, holla.. what sampler do u use.

Posted by: jb at December 14, 2003 02:13 PM

what's good JB,

first off i wanted to give u all the props u deserve for doin what u do, and please continute to drop that fire. i'm tryin to make it as a producer as well, and we all definately appreciate your tips and advice on gear, however my pockets have been a little skinny lately and i was wondering what you could suggest for expanding my sound without breaking the bank. i think the 5080 would be the jewel in da crown as well as an mpc..but i gotta do it big asap and get those big checks. good lookin out and keep doin ya thang.
-Mr. Jinx

Posted by: Mr. Jinx at December 14, 2003 03:03 PM

first off, if your using just the triton..your shit aint gonna be all that hot.(why is it the korg triton seems to be the un-industry standard??) secondly, like jb said, the roland modules are fantastic..xv-5050 is dope..im into the oberheim and nord lead sounds as well...im a huge fan of the akai mpc series..i currently use the mpc 4000 studio d plus and the mpc 2000 xl..but i have been really getting into the roland mv-8000. as for fly girl's comments..ive never mentioned sending just blaze a "tape" or anything of that nature..i assume he's heard quite a bit of my material already. i never asked him for advice (wouldnt need to)and actually offered him some advice on gear(more like a suggestion), just blaze is undoubtedely an amazing producer..(by the way i picked up mephis bleek's "made" and i am now 100% convinced that this is the real just blaze-thanks for the suggestion jay smooth) and will definetely be headed into hip hop hall of fame status when its all said and done...

Posted by: dj dubb at December 14, 2003 06:30 PM

Yo i was just readin a interview in some underground mag with Just Blaze. He syncs Pro Tools with MPC4000 as the master because Pro Tools is more "locked" that way. I guess he does like Roland too because he said he brought only a Roland V-Synth on the road during the summer.
All you guys talk about hardware like its cheap yo. Reason has been perfect, its got everything. The thing I'm lookin for is good orch hits like the one JB uses in "pump it up". How many of u edit samples on the computer? and sequence/sample it on the sequencer or sampler softsynth? Isnt it easier than hardware samplers?

Posted by: ShureBert at December 14, 2003 10:36 PM

Shit can be hot wit a triton... I dont know how it cant but whatever wit that.... the "un-industry" standard? Right...whateva that means haha... I'm sayin i dont shit money homie n right now im puttin in 42 hours a week to get money to build a studio while you postin 42 hours a week tryin to make yaself not look dumb from all the previous bullshit you been ramblin bout...
Anyway-
I'll def. check out for the Roland sound modules...
And Jay- the drums aint that good on the triton but you can make em sound a lot better addin insert effects to em n whatnot..def. helps wit the clappin hits too..
stay up

Posted by: Con at December 14, 2003 11:20 PM

i aint mad atcha con, good luck. shurebert.. orchestra hits on pump it up??? maybe i missed something..

Posted by: jb at December 15, 2003 08:04 PM

ayo blaze... ive loved ur beatz like crazy fam...u, heatmakerz and kanye been my inspiration... im just beginning... but i try to sample just like u mayne... if u got tha time could u give me some opinions on my shit, i make my beats for beat boxin and battlin off sites...

Posted by: Tha Young Rook at December 15, 2003 08:56 PM

42 hours a week to build a studio? good luck with your endeavors con..i have the ability to post (like just blaze) because i already have the studio you dream about owning and then some..
the korg triton is not a weapon anymore..swizz beats played it out(and he doesnt even use it anymore)..as for shurebert, yo dog, hardware is expensive..i personally prefer the hardware/ software combination to produce and record..i currently run a pro tools mix plus setup into a solid state logic reconditioned 4000 g-series..i record to with the lexicon 500l and neve 33069c compressor as my primary "outboard" gear..along with a focusrite red 6 mic pre and an avalon dual tube mic pre..i have a variety of microphones, but prefer the sony 800cg(for vocals) i use a variety of mics for recording live drum tracks..usually the akg d-112 for the kick and a nuemann fet u 47 for the snares and percussion(this is also a good way to get solid drums and percussion..you can use plug ins and outboard gear to create your own kits..ala timbaland)..i use a variety of tdm plug ins when mixing in pro tools..i use two interchangeable glyph drives..my midi rig is designed around a mac g4, i use reason, samplecell 2, sampletank, and various midi programs, with my mpc 4000 or mv-8000 as my main midi sequencer... along with a roland fantom -s, nord lead 2, oberheim, waldorf q, roland xv-5050, jp800, and jv2080,a micro moog, and a yamaha motif for my sounds..(some are rackmount, some are actually keyboards)..i use technics 1200's and also use the pioneer cdj 1000 ...my advice to con is dont rely on one piece of equipment to produce..just blaze will tell you this himself..be versatile in your use of gear..good luck..

Posted by: djdubb at December 15, 2003 09:51 PM

Yo it sounds like you have one hell of a setup man. Im definately new to Producing, I never heard of half the stuff you named, but what I wanna know. is it really necessary to have all that?

Posted by: Focused at December 16, 2003 12:31 AM

yo i agree with Focused, i cant afford none of that but i got talent up the ass. i worked wit a few people and all i need from what i been told is my own shit. too much man i gotta eat. im still using an Alesis Ar-16 and sampling my mommas old records on my computer....

Posted by: Maxlayback at December 16, 2003 08:38 AM

And you'll notice that you've never even heard of dude. Even if he DOES actually have the equipment he keeps on talkin about, that wouldn't necessarily make him a good producer. You can't buy talent. Show n prove. You got beats? You talk like your in Just Blaze's peer group. Why don't you see if Jay Smooth will let you post a coulpe of your beats on this site.

Posted by: mic at December 16, 2003 01:47 PM

hmm that sounds like an idea... i'd like to hear this.. then again sumone could just post anyones beats on here.. jay??

Posted by: jb at December 16, 2003 03:39 PM

My server is running low on space, but if people really want to show and prove maybe I can set up a soundclick.com page for people to showcase their beats, and set up a page here for heads to give their feedback. That could get interesting..

Posted by: Jay Smooth at December 16, 2003 03:59 PM

i got my shit up check it out...........

http://www.soundclick.com/streetantikzproductionz

just need some feedback aint big in producin...just like samplin

Posted by: Tha Young Rook at December 16, 2003 05:22 PM

is it neccessary to have all that..no, not as a producer (what i have is a commercial recording facility)...i honestly feel like a producer should work within his means..whatever you are comfortable with, go with that..but i feel like using just one piece of gear limits you..i started out playing bass, so i used that as my main tool when i started..i slowly grew into the gear side of thangs over the years as the music shifted towards that arena. live musicians are actually my preference, then i add samples, keyboards,etc...as far as hip hop producing..ive seen top name producers get away with an mpc, a keyboard, and two turn tables. newer name producers are also leaning towards straight computer based producing..9th wonder, who produced "threatz" for jay-z, uses cool edit pro by syntrillium(now audio audition by adobe) and fruity loops..the d-twinz, who worked with lil flip, use sound forge and acid 4.0..so to say you need all that equipment isnt necessarily true..but the majority of top producers do use various items of gear, and "you can tell the diffrence"..just in the conversion process alone..plus theres nothing better than having an arsenal of quality audio weapons..the actual gear you own does not matter..the end result is the most important..does it sound dope?? if you make a track with an mpc 4000, ensoniq asr-16(my first sampler-those were the days),fantom, triton, etc and it sounds like shit..and you make a beat using acid 4.0 and reason..and it sounds great..does it really matter what equipment you have?? no..the end product is what counts...just like if you have a dope ass song you record and the mix is horrible...well then your songs quality is diminished..these a&r's dont want to hear skill..they want dollar signs..they want a finished product..trust me..the days of demo basements are over..you better come with a finished album..professionally mixed and mastered. so in the end, be sure to gather the equipment that can give you quality. believe me, its quality over quantity..if you got 60 beats that are half ass, poorly mixed, poor drum kits, etc..and you have one dope ass beat, quality mix, nice perfect kicks , snares, and basslines, etc...these guys will choose you for one beat thats hot..over a bunch of "okay" tracks..and to get in this game, all you have to do is get one artist to use a track..license out the track for a fee..and buy more gear..then make a better track..sell it for more..buy more gear..keep the hustle going, until you have the resources to become a just blaze or kanye west. luckily, for me, i played in a very successful R&b band in the late 80's and 90's..so i used my money to purchase gear...and used my reputation to "sell" myself to artists..

Posted by: djdubb at December 16, 2003 06:21 PM

JB,

Sorry that this is off topic, but I was wondering if the AOL email you posted a while back was good. I work for SCEA and was wondering if I could email you about a project we got going on for the new Playstation Portable. This project is straight banannas. I would love to talk to you about it. Thanks man

Posted by: Bleek at December 16, 2003 08:07 PM

umm yeah its good...

Posted by: jb at December 16, 2003 11:30 PM

aight, Dubb/BLaze
what do you suggest for the low budget producer (other than bumrushing a friends inhouse studio) as far as programs go. i like the Acid Pro programs and Cakewalk etc, and as far as gear, what would be the best to invest in that will not break my bank and have me evicted?

Just, i think it was you that got me hooked on Cakewalk, but i cant remember what keyboard you had back then. i know you had some other gear/ programs too. it was a basic swet up but as we all know talent prevailed...

Posted by: Maxlayback at December 17, 2003 08:42 AM

heres my advice on a relatively inexpensive production setup..get you a pc or mac(if you dont already have one) and purchase yourself an mpc 2000 xl(there actually running about $650 to $800 bucks on e-bay or sweetwater trading post), there is several good programs out there to use..the steinberg products(nuendo 2.0, cubase sx,vst instruments, and plug ins) are reliable (though i dont condone pirated software, there is plenty of people who can get you the stuff you need) learn how to use midi properly..and buy yourself a midi port that connects via usb or firewire...and use your mpc as your midi "brain" or controller..midi based programs like sampletank and reason are good..acid pro 4.0 is actually pretty dope, though you lose some quality in the conversion process (computer to cd) so the audio is somewhat muffled sounding..(which can be corrected by buying a high end sound card developed strictly for audio programs) if you plan on recording, your going to need digital i/o and s/pdif interface..i recommend pro tools LE package(which comes with a control surface) or the nuendo package..if producing is just what your trying to accomplish then stick with midi..and use synth programs..(you can also buy a cheap usb/firewire midi keyboard)..then drop a few bucks on some good headphones, so you dont get evicted

Posted by: djdubb at December 17, 2003 01:51 PM

yo just, i spoke to eliana the other night...so hopefully ill be running into you real soon

Posted by: djdubb at December 17, 2003 02:15 PM

You know, someone could ask for advice on how to build their own airplane, and this dude would answer. We can all read...and we can all look up shit on the net. Most of us just don't the have time to do the research you seem to spend your life pursuing. Get a job Dubbs.

Posted by: mic at December 17, 2003 02:35 PM

well, i did ask and he did answer....
i'm taking notes... i agree with that you said about Acid Pro 4.0 and the Steinberg products. i guess its a matter of me skipping a meal or two to get that MPC 2000. i been eyeing it for a minute.
I thought about getting a cheap midi keyboard, but im afraid of the sound quality...but *uck it i guess my days of drumtracks and samples has to end sometime.

Posted by: Maxlayback at December 17, 2003 04:28 PM

You don't get it though...at one point this guy claimed that he didn't have a computer, to cover up a different story he made up. Now he's got a $50,000+ studio. Dubb, why don't you let someone who is living a real life as a producer answer the questions. You seem to lead multiple lives (and possess multiple personalities). Your cover-ups are getting weaker and weaker homie. I can't believe how much research goes into your bullshitting. You're like the Talented Mr.Ripley. So what is your real name?
Kanye West?

Posted by: mic at December 17, 2003 06:31 PM

u spoke 2 ely??? good.. i havent spoken to or seen her in months since she got fired. tell her i said hi n i hope shes well. hold up.. if u know elyana like that.. then ud know that my managers name was neysa camacho and not nassa camato, i mean.. theyre only sisters. ahh guess it was just a mixup. o well. and pls lets refrain from the b.s. on here, its old already. and how own this studio and have all this equipment but u had to use "shawntee roselands" computer coz u dont own one. listen man, if ima see u soon then ill see you soon but man, let it go. its OLD already, anyway
Nick, the controller u get is not gonna affect your sound quality, ur just using it as a trigger to ur sound module or virtal instrument in your computer. if u need help settin up just email me your # and either me or poun will hook u up.

Posted by: jb at December 17, 2003 07:14 PM

yo just,
i was wonderin how you got your shit heard when u were startin out. like u mentioned your first songs, but did u just send beat tapes to random labels? how would i go about sending shit to the roc? maybe we can get that post up here and u can hear our shit. i know u got a lot of questions to answer, so thanks if you get this one. peace

Posted by: bigjerms at December 17, 2003 07:37 PM

c'mon..you think i waste my time researching this shit..go head..do your homework..and yes ive been playing games and said alot of shit...the computer thing isnt nothing..it was all part of the bs i been kickin..im full of shit and i KNOW IT..but when it comes to this audi recording/ engineering field..this is what i do for a living, i produce(as part of a production team) and started out in a band in the late 80's and spent the mid 90's an assitant engineer to a very well established neo soul producer..no bullshit, and i have no reason to reveal who i am..cuz unlike just blaze, i prefer to live in infamy. as far as the nassa cammato thing, i went that route with it, just to see if you were who you said you were..the real just blaze would of caught the mistake(and you did) so at that point i was convinced it was you...
look, all bullshit aside, your bro poun' is a friend..and i been knowing dj enuff for years..ill be sure to tell ely whutup for u..though im sure you would like to know she still tellin folks she s part of your management team. as for me and you, well talk..and then youll proabably wanna kick my ass for this shit, once you realize who i am..so i apologize before hand..imma fan of hip hop and jay z, and of course you..this started out as a big joke here in the studio to see if we could get a rumor started and how far it would go..i swear on god, that there has been times three or four diffrent people have responded to the posts..so it hasnt been just me everytime..this
is the receptionist's computer in the lobby..we come down here and clown quite a bit..sorry for the misunderstanding...but i has been very fun..but you got my word, ill stop playing around and only respond when there is actually a topic worth discussion(like producing/or studio setup) ill leave it alone..and tell the others to do the same..but just blaze..when we meet up(which should be in a few weeks after the holidays) be sure and tell everyone on here that we met and funny enough, most the shit ive said has been true..even when i was fronting, i still said some honest things...and yes, i was a goodbar in LA, with marques houston and meghan goode..(check it out-i could of swore you were there for camron's party last year) and yes..the roc was in the building..except for just blaze..i even believe kyambo was there, as was kenny burns..(i aint sure about hip hop, but kb wuz..)anyway, so i lied, and despearately tryed to keep it alive..(damn dog..you ruined our fun)
but to all deez kids on here doing your thang..keep pushin for the top and dont give up..and listen to this nigga just blaze...(like you wouldnt) ohh and stop with all the "can i send my demo to you?" or "yo, can you tell me how to get a cd to someone"..look, create a buzz for yourself, make these bitches come to you and play by your own rules...go all out and never look back...

Posted by: djdubb at December 18, 2003 12:06 AM

aight Just, i'll get the # to you after the holiday, Maybe santa can shove a MPC in a stocking... but all jokes aside when i get it together trust me you will know..., in the meantime i'll be here taking notes. good look!

I have a Question. Lets say I get an Mpc 2000xl which Im hoping to get this Christmas, where Do I start with sounds? its so many drum kits that claim to be good for the Akai series. But I just need a Kit thats descent and Versatile to start off with.

Posted by: Focused at December 19, 2003 02:35 AM

say, e-mail me(deejaixi@hotmail.com) and ill give you some info on sounds and drum kits for your sampler..no joke

Posted by: djdubb at December 19, 2003 06:43 PM

I've always sampled my drums from mostly old records... Well kick snares n hats anyway.. dig in the crates!!! I don't really know anything about those ready made sound libraries... Maybe ill get some for this roland mv thingy..

Posted by: jb at December 20, 2003 01:41 AM

Dubb, if any of ya post was to me, i still think you's a joke no matter who you are.. Even if you in the industry like that- the industry is still weak as fuck right now... so it aint sayin much-
N if ya "demo" comment was referrin to me talkin bout peschi- shit duke is findin his own way i aint gotta speak for him.... he's gettin thousands (not like 100 thousands but a few thousand) albums shrink wrapped bar coded the whole nine n the album'll be out by the end of jan.... n if he dont get signed...well i guess rap has gone down the shitter.... but on the contrary- i do need help on hook ups for my studio lol... hit me up if you actually into hook ups like that...haha... holla back tho 1

Posted by: Con at December 20, 2003 02:18 AM

Not a bad Idea for drums Jb. that could Really save me some Money too Thanks for the suggestion. I read up on that Roland MV, that thing is Giving akai a real run for its money too. Im sure you have layed your hands on quite a bit of hardware but what about Software have you had any good expieriences with some of the production software like Soundforge,Reason, Cubase, FL, Kontax etc?

Posted by: Focused at December 20, 2003 06:44 PM

i cant say i like that mv yet... its not a bad machine but i dont think itll be replacing my mp anytime soon. jazzy jeffs been using it n he said the same to me.. certian things about it are hreat. some are asinine. (sp?) i havent used to much software to comment on a lot of it besides logic n reason.. I have pretty much everything but i havent had time to sit n mess with it all. that kontakt looked crazy.. ive got ill live drum patches 4 it.. the softsynths are definitely gonna be the way eventually tho. now if only roland would make a virtual 5080..

Posted by: jb at December 20, 2003 10:00 PM

Oh n dubb... i missed a post ya had earlier directed to me bout you got the studio i'd dream of havin then more... well obviously it aint workin to your advantage if you aint big in the game.....so good luck wit ya late 80's r&b group n shit... you can say the triton's been played out by wack ass dj clue... but dre n em still use the shit (obviously)n im sure other producers do to... but hey- different strokes for different folks right? I dont really even like rap where its at right now... n raps jus a hobby- you cant have a dream be ya main focus in life cuz when ya old n realize you aint gon make it- you got nothin to fall back on... i would like to hear ya beats tho comin from ya "dream" studio...clown

n jb- you ever fuck wit computer software? If so- what program would you suggest/prefer? holla

Yo Con I just asked that question and the answer is right above your last post I beleive.... Just look up lol. unless you meant other kinds of software? Peace

Posted by: Focused at December 21, 2003 09:16 PM

First of all I just wanna say that Just you are definitely one of the hottest producers and you inspire me to do better music. I have a technical question that I'm pretty sure you could help me with. How do you manage your folders on the mpc disks? Is it best to make a library of sounds or sample as you go along? I got into the habit of finding songs to chop, then picking drum sounds from my triton. Could you guide me in the right direction for the long run.

Thanks for ur help!

P.S.-be on the lookout for anything coming out of North Carolina we serious!

Posted by: street anthem at December 23, 2003 01:03 AM

i keep my drums organized in kits. ive got like 8 of them and whenever i work on a beat i load up all the kits n just figure out which drums fit the track.. and nevr drums from the triton. nevrrrrrr i mean u can but i just dont like the sound of em.

Ok I have a question that I know Im Prollky gon get laughed at about but anyway, I have to know this. I got some songs ive been wanting to sample. I was going to use Cooledit to do all the chopping, the thing is I have no Idea where I should start. does anybody Know some good ways to filter out drums and make just melodys stand out more? I want to have a melody and a sampled hook, but I cant seem to find a good part to sample for a melody JB do you filter out vocals on alot of your stuff? or are you able to get your hands on Master Recordings with just vocals and the instrumentals on the record? also. when I sample a song and get it cut out just how i want, How do I go about making a drum pattern that will fit with the vocals on my hook? i mean Tempo wise would I have to have my drum pattern programed to the same tempo as my sample? any tips and advice are welcome here. Thanks in advance

Posted by: budgie at January 2, 2004 08:49 AM

Focused,
I had the same problem, I ain't no pro but I lay the drums down first then lay the vocal or hook over it. Some programs have a option or something that will match up your samples. or i just play with it until i get the perfect match. i feel that the drums are what make the song so i chop and paste and repaste and rechop until it fits AND makes sense. Try that until professional help answers.

Whats good ya'll?

I stumbled on this msg board after listening to the JB interview. Didn't know JB was online like this...anyhow, i was gunna ask, I've listened to quite a few of your tracks, and the thing that pops out first in most cases is the drums along with the kicks. I sample 90% of my drums, but the kicks don't "pop" as much as i'd like. I don't have a "Young Guru" to help engineer with the music right now, so everything is mixed by yours truly. Any tips other than compression & EQ? Thanks...

Yo Just - First off, I'm a fan and student of your work. You're definitely one of my favorites. Do you have any advise for the up and coming producer. I'd like to get some management but it's hard to tell who can really get your stuff heard and all the wanna-be managers out there. Any advise. How did you get on? Thanx -

Posted by: Mass Produktionz at April 5, 2004 05:00 PM

Yo Just man your game is tight on da sampling also. I'd jus like to congradulate you for dat. I'm trying to be a producer and get things lifted off da ground but da problem is I live north of da border where some mcee's and producers work in igloos(naaa jus playin). But I have someone representing my beats in New-York. But I only have one question(you probably already got a billion already)what do you think about software production? Like I use my home computer and a controller to make my beats and I cut samples up in Soundforge or in Cool Edit Pro do you think I should get into da whole MPC and Triton vibe? I would get them but right now let's say times are hard in da snow. But if you could answer this question for me it would be greatly appreciated.

It made me want to dj more than produce. I used to use turntables about 9 years ago when I was in a group but we split and the record collection was mostly theirs. I bought the 800's cause I have mostly cd's. opinions?
