Jason from the EFF Sets the Record Straight
Jason Schultz of the EFF, whose words were the subject of scrutiny here a few days ago, has stopped by our humble abode to offer an explanation:
Hi. This is Jason Schultz from the EFF, who was MISquoted in the article. I saw your post here and wanted to make sure I clarified what happened. When I talked to the reporter, I had no idea that the article was going to be about the RIAA holding quasi-legal, racist raids. I thought it was merely another article about the RIAA sending out its investigators to collect info on CD bootleggers and then turn it over to the real police to do an investigation. I was shocked, just like many of you, when I saw the article and learned the real story. Make no mistake, the EFF is entirely committed to preserving all our civil liberties and would never endorse the kind of vigilante tactics the RIAA is using in its street raids.

Aah, reporters and their quotes. Yeah, the full context does help explain the EFF's stance. I think the crucial distinction is whether people are making money off of it. Still, sad that such an important issue isn't free of inevitable race/class angles.

The reality is that they want to bust everyone... but rich people are harder to bust. It's that simple. Poor people are just exposed. I don't think race is an issue, except for the fact that a lot of poor people in big American cities are people of color. They didn't go after the latinos who might have pressed up those CDs... they went after the latinos hustling on the street.

Sorry, I misspoke - it's not that it's an "issue" in that it effects the events here. I meant that it's an underlying issue that's being highlighted by the way things are playing out. You can pretty much always find a race or class angle on a story if you look hard enough, so I guess the observation is pretty meaningless in this case.
