First of all, Jews were prominent members of the Civil Rights movement. Some, like Michael Schwerner, gave their lives for the cause. Should they have, instead, incredulously asked whether "fighting racism is supposed to be the responsibility of Jewish folk"?

Since it would have been Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 75th birthday today, I'll answer with a quote from the man himself:

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

Joe... no need to be defensive. I think everyone on this post would stand up for someone in trouble like that. But we do need to put some perspective on this. I'm not changing the subject or splitting hairs when I suggest the term "Anti-Jewish" instead of anti-Semitic. I think we need to say it for what it is. I think it would be as much a wake-up call for Jewish people to accept this, as for others to understand the semantics as well.

I bring up the issue of semantics because I want to undermine the very foundation of how we divide ourselves as people. I also believe that racial categories are meaningless. When one is exposed to a wide range of Jewish people, you realize there are such broad differences in appearance and culture that any attempt to lump Jewish people into one group is meaningless and divisive.

And I bring this up because I think Jewish people are just as guilty of perpetuating a lot of myths and paranoia... as the people who persecute and discriminate against them. And Israel is a good example of this sort of dynamic. I stick up for Jews... but I don't stick up for Israel. Contrary to the propaganda... the fate of Jews is not linked to the success of a Middle Eastern colony. Each side -- Jews and Arabs -- feeds into the fears and prejudices of the other group. In many ways it is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That said, I don't think most contemporary Jews see themselves as a group in the same way that Black people do. The differences between different segments of the Jewish community -- if you could even call it that -- are huge. This is not so for the Black community, which is still forced into a high level of solidarity/monolithics by issues of class and racism far beyond anything found amongst Jews. Just look at poverty and incarceration statistics for Black people and the differences become evident.

But we need to leave the Blacks vs. Jews thing behind us. It is another self-fulfilling prophecy of self-segregation and disempowerment. We need to build coalitions based on mutual understanding and respect. I wouldn't say placing the grievances of Jews above Black people is so much unfounded, as it is counterproductive.

The bottom line is that all communities will benefit from coalition building. And the main barrier is precisely this sort of "we got it worse" dialog. The focus on discrimination ignores more fundamental education and economic issues.

Second, I think we all benefit from coalition building but this thing sounds to me like it is coming out of left field to me. This is going to sound callous but, A few synagouges somewhere in Europe get burnt down and now black people need to turn and focus their attention on that?

I could see if we were doing just fine over here, but the state of hip hop, our community the fact that over 1 million brothers are locked up in prison, HIV/AIDS is killing people of color left and right....I just don't see how now is the time to focus on European Jews. That being said I do believe injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, but I think we need to prioritize, and I just don't see how this issue is more relevant than the crisis within the black community at this point.

Furthermore, coalition building really needs to focus around issues of class more than anything else. Lets organize Working-class people of all 'races' or nationalities come together and work on make their day to day lives better.

We need a class based analysis of our problems, and that is something Russell Simmons, nor most religous leaders are quick to do.

I'd just like to point out that there are subjects of much greater seriousness out there...I honestly don't see what Simmons is trying to achieve out of all this..

I am a jew who is visiting Israel right now and sitting there as we speak. I could not agree more with the need for coalition building. I do community service within the Baltimore jewish community and within the D.C. black community. After I finish college I am going to Ethiopia to help black jews and non jewish black people in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The coalition that existed during the civil rights movement is lacking today and I would love to join Russell Simmons to strengthen these ties.
As far as comments made regarding the Palestinian people I would just like to say a few things. Since the topic is so detailed and complicated it requires much more research and thought then to simply write "Palestinians, who have been treated like animals for over 50 years, and are still being treated as such by Jews." If you read papers such as Haaretz in Israel(which is where I read about what russell simmons wants to do) and talk to the huge majority in Israel you will see how much peace is longed for and that no one country goes to such lengths to be humanitarian outside the government and inside. You do not see the work that is done here to alleviate the harsh reality of Palestinian life. You have to also think in context that although many are not terrorists the possibility of terror and the need for security of your own people effects how you deal with those that could possibly cause such harm. Also you must know that I have never known any people that are so self critical, rarely two jews especially israelis fully agree on policy. The history is complex and needs to be read and then read again through different inevitable biases. You must do this to see the origins of the problems so you can attempt at finding the answers. I want to work to improve the daily Palestinian quality of life and that of the average Israeli but it is not simple and requires much work. If you think that one side is unequivocally right and the other has no faults, read more. I will leave this here because it is too long and a bit off topic but email me if you would like to talk more about this.
Someone asked "what increased anti-semitism?" This is popping up everywhere from beatings in Europe to subtlties on college campuses. The Israeli state and people's views on what it should and should not do is being used as a cover for anti-semitism in some respect. This is not always true for everyone but it has incited this new wave. This base has been a spring board for anti-semitism and in a sense made it popular to be against Israel and therefore Jews.
There was also a mention of prioritizing and dealing with the black community first. By building a strong coalition this will allow for more people outside the black community to be working for the black community and vice versa. There will be more to gain from the amount of hands, voices and resources then will be lost in an apparent lack of focus by one community helping outside its own.
I applaud Mr. Simmons and his efforts and I am glad to have found this website.

Wow, well first you didn't mention anything about coalition building but if you want to side step that for a minute we can. I apologize to those that feel that this dialogue shouldn't appear here but I am glad that you wrote what you did so I could answer.
Ok so if you are willing to listen I would like to tell you some of the history that you might not know. If I am wrong correct me but I have done extensive research otherwise I would not offer it.
First if you wanna do the biblical/historical right to the land thing we can and you can see that the Jewish people lived in Israel thousands of years ago. I'm guessing you don't care about that but some people say there is no right for Jews to live in Israel by saying that it was their land first well this is an answer for that. The Jews lived here as far back as anybody. Now that we got that out of the way.
The more recent history. There was never a Palestinian state. It was either ruled by the Ottoman empire or british in recent past. We are talking 1800's and the British after WWI in 1917-1948. Early settlers came from all over to come back to the land that was spoken of in the bible around late 1890's. The main movement of going to Palestine being 1920's was sparked by increasing anti-semitism throughout the world. I note that these movements were to a land known as Palestine run by the British and heavily populated with arabs. The jews such as my grandfather bought land and irrigated. Israel was mainly swamp land and many jews died of malaria working the land. Riots between the neighboring towns existed on both sides because of frequent tension that a jewish population was growing. In 1937 a proposal was offered by the British to give the Jewish people 1/5 of the area known as Palestine and the rest to what would be Palestinian Arabs. The proposal was accepted by the Jews and rejected outright by the future Palestinian Arabs. In 1947 the U.N. voted to create two states within the area known as palestine offering a state for Arabs and Jews. The jews accepted the arabs did not. In 1947, in the aftermath of WWII and the holocaust the English pulled out of Palestine. In 1948 there was a U.N. resolution declaring a state for the jewish people known as Israel. Immediately Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon declared war. The jewish people won this war and the borders of pre-1967 war were established. If you would like to proclaim here that people were kicked out of their homes which some reports say they left and some say they were thrown out, you may, it was war. I assure you if the jews would not have won there would not have been one jew left in the area. Now as for the neighboring arab countries that helped fight the war against Israel. Many to this day refuse the refugees and their children that became refugees after this war. Israel takes in its own. If you want also to talk about treatment of the palestinian people you can look to Jordan who severely massacred them when uprisings occured against the state, something Jordan could do being a dictatorship. This is something Israel the only democratic state in the area does not do. Though you have said that.
This leads us to another war known as the six day war that Israel won in 1967. This is where Israel captured the west bank and Golan and inconsequentially a people. Israel should have dealt with this situation more seriously earlier. Though it many times tried to offer land for peace.
The thing about the settlers that you mentioned is very wide ranging. All these settlers may I remind you are settling in Israel though I don't agree with the majority of the settlements, but that is my personal opinion. There are settlers that are crazy and commit crimes but they are dealt with by the Israeli state and sentenced as the terrorist in the Palestinian territories are not. By the way the proportion that these settlers amount to in the Israeli state are a very small amount.
Here's the thing, i am sure you know of the Oslo accords and the other efforts to gain peace between the two people. I also am sure you know that our late president Bill Clinton even said that Arafat single handly torpedoed the process-his words. The problem here is leadership or lack thereof by the Palestinian authority.
Now as for the apartheid state this is laughable. I dont mean to insult your intelligence but if you have an apartheid state how can you be blown up on a bus? You can't and thats the point the point is there are many israeli arabs, population percentage being 19%. Palestinian arabs come to work in Israel all the time. I believe a few days ago there was a suicide bomber that blew herself up and killed four Israelis. If she wasn't able to work in Israel as many do and many more did before the intifada no one would be dying on the Israeli side.
You said the idea of a jewish state is inherently flawed. Here's the problem only when there was a jewish state were the jewish people safe. Right now its not so good in Europe and its very good in the U.S for jews. It was very good for the Jews in Spain before they were killed and expelled. There are very few people that have been oppressed like the Jews, the black people being one and hence the coalition. The need for the state to exist once again as it had many many years ago was evident. The separating of two states is neccesary for Israel's survival if you have a secular state there will be no Israel because we cannot be a democracy and be in minority. The result will be another arab state where Jews are still discriminated against as everywhere else.
I don't know what I haven't answered I am just going off the top of my head but your view of a murdering state that oppresses and terrorizes couldn't be further from the truth. This state was built by socialistic idealistic people that came from everywhere not just jews to live on the kibbutz. The morality of the people wouldn't allow for negative actions as you have seen without any other reason then the death of their children. In regards to the security fence, I and most people here have a problem with. No one wants it but many including me feel it neccesary. The big problem i have with it is where it runs and I am not alone on that. I believe when Sharon is through and he will be soon we can right some of his wrongs. But don't get me wrong. Sharon, who at one point many would have laughed that he would become prime minister because he was so extreme, became the prime minister because people here felt that their hand for peace was smacked away and so they tried a fist.
The thing is I know you know the recent stuff but your main point is that we stole it from them in the first place so obviously they would never just want a piece of land back they would want it all. I am sitting here telling you here is the history we bought, worked and were then brought into many wars where we won and took land. Which if you notice we were willing to give up as we did in egypt and we were willing to share as we offered in 1937 and 1948.
Also what of the Palestinians? Arafat democratically elected? I dont think so go tell me when his term ends and get back to me. The money that comes in does it go to the people? I suppose that is Israel's fault that no infrastructure exists or maybe because Arafat's wife has to live in a castle in France. Have you seen these videos that the palestinian children are brought up with its enough to make you cry instantly because of the amount of hate portrayed and taught. I hate to break it to you but that doesn't exist in the oh so terrible country that people of all colors and all sexes are treated equally. This includes openly homosexual people in the military which is a right that America is yet to offer.
It is sad that Israel cannot explain its case well to people. People see houses being bulldozed and they forget that that was the house that inhabited the man or woman who just blew himself up and brought 19 people with him. I guess you’re wrong there Adam…You can’t just say that the Jews lived there before anyone else without even giving some logical evidence to your statement. The Canaanites were the earliest known inhabitants of Palestine ever, and have been there since 3rd millennium B.C., and the first time the Israelites ever stepped into that land was when they invaded it and defeated the Canaanites in the 13th or 14th century B.C. It was then in the year 1000 B.C. when the ancient kingdom of Israel came into existence, and eventually the Jews lost power, and the land was occupied by rulers of different countries and tribes. I won’t go into more detail unless I’m asked to, because I think that sums it all up nicely.

Now, just because the Israelites lived there a thousand years ago, doesn’t mean they can just go and outstrip the Arabs and Muslims, who have been living there for the past 1300 years, from their land! 1300 years is no joke! The Arabs have been living there since 638 AD, and since then, it has always been known as Palestine, independently of who ruled it.

You also mentioned that Israel is the only democratic state in the area at the moment…Ok then, and I wanna ask you: what kind of “democratic” state is it, when the government gives more rights to a person living anywhere in the world and who has never in his life stepped into “Israel”, than to a Palestinian Arab whose whole life is, and has always been based in that country? Just for the fact that his religion is Jewish, he gets all the things a Palestinian could ever have dreamed of (not to mention that he gets a nice new home which once belonged to some insignificant Palestinian).

No you are right about the canaanites. I meant to say the last group of people that are still around and identifiable as a group. I believe that is correct -i am really asking here. My point was just to do what you did in saying that Arabs lived there for, as you said 1300 years. Which is to point out that there is no right to claim that someone was the first. As I'm sure there were always jews in small and large numbers there at varying periods of time. It was to make the point of the idea of sharing the land.
As far as some of your views on zionism i can't change them and don't want to but it is still a democracy that elects its leaders based on a system like Britain.
The part I want you to look into is the hate that is actually taught. Its really hard to watch but I suggest you go look. The one I saw was kinda like their version of sesame street but it mainly focuses on suicide bombing and has children and big birdesqe figures cheering it on.
There is this group called SICK. I forgot what it stands for but it is a good group which basically is against teaching hate to kids and this goes for settlers and palestinians and many more countries that deal with this. Its at my school and we have representation of people from around the globe.
As far as the part about the sentencing being bullshit. I know that there was a settler who shot a palestinian. This was rather recently and he is going to jail right now. This does not occur under the PA rule for their terrorists.
I don't hear about the "palestinian rebels" being treated badly by the palestinian authority most likely because it is not reported. But I do know that the palestinian authority condones all acts of violence or it would not continue. Do you not agree that the leadership on both sides needs to change?
As far as road blocks. This is a painful hardship that several of my friends have had to endure imposing. Contrary to what you believe this is an awful and terrible feeling also for a soldier, be it i understand it is worse on the side of palestinian in probably all respects but it is a bit scary for an 18yr old kid to wonder if this person has a bomb under their clothes as the suicide bomber had two days ago. These road blocks are there though for just that reason to stop these bombs from reaching cafe's not for the enjoyment of ridicule of the average palestinian.
In regards to the wall, as I already mentioned, I am against where it is being built but this is the best solution to stopping people from walking into Israel with a bomb strapped around them. This is also the only solution at this moment as you and I have seen the peace process fail time and time again. As far as your grandfather and at the risk of getting personal I don't know the situation and I don't know that your grandfather would not have thrown a jew out of his home had he been on the victorious side of war. It is written in the charter of the palestinians to send all jews to the sea so I imagine that sentiment would have been carried out.
I personally would like all new leadership but this is hard especially on the Palestinian side which may have to wait for Arafat's death. The goal of two states will not be realized with violence, as I'm sure you agree with. It also will not be realized with hatred from those of us from outside the situation but by dialogue such as this. I do not want to fight with you on this so I apologize if I was provocative but that is the nature of the argument.
As far as Russell Simmons, I think he sees anti-semitism not as connected to anti-israel sentiment but just plain anti-semitism that has arisen throughout the world and wants to stop it because many jews came to the aid of blacks when they needed it. Coalitions between people especially minority's is the only thing we can do to withstand the pressure from tough cutting of social programs and hurtful economics dealt to us by people like Bush-I hope your not republican too. If so I take it back.

We could be wrong... but with white people in modern Israel becoming much like Hitler to the lives and self-determination of Palestinians... there will never be much sympathy that is as blind and loyal as some whites jewish people would like to have with Blacks. We have felt pain beyond pain with our own suffering our experiences with white supremacy.. As well we have seen clearly who is the true victim and who is the true perpetrator of crimes.
