Questions For My Esteemed Neighors in Blogville:
1. Is Dean Over?
2. Can Kerry win against G-Dub?
What do y'all think? I'm a little worried myself. Dean shaking up his campaign staff has the feel of desperation, and choosing the guy from Gore 2000 as his new head guy doesn't seem too promising. It's obvious the Democrat establishment is vehemently opposed to a Dean nomination, so he can't afford many more missteps if he's gonna come back. Seems like a longshot no matter what.
But I don't get why people think Kerry is so much more electable. He always looks really stiff and sour to me, I'm afraid he'd be the latest in a long run of Democrat nominees (except Clinton) who were just not ready for prime-time, and never had a shot. I don't get how anyone compares this dude to Kennedy.
Judging strictly on charisma and likability, here's who I think would play best, in order:
1. Edwards
2. Clark
3. Dean
4. Kerry
But that is the exact reverse order of who is most likely to get the nod.
Can somebody cheer me up?

Dean is not over. From the news coverage I have been watching Dean is still a bigger story than Kerry. Plus currently Dean currently has more delegates. I think there are a few more primary races to go before we know who the candidate is for sure.
I think Kerry has the foreign policy experience that some Democrats find would be able to fend off on the one area where a lot of Americans think Bush has the other hand.
Posted by: Cal Ulmann at January 29, 2004 10:31 AM
Sad but true fact, ever since TV the tallest candidate has won every election except Carter in 76 and depending on how you see it Bush in 2000. Kerry is the tallest democrat. He's also a hell of a lot taller then Bush. Edwards is an inch or two over Bush, while Clark and Dean are midgets in this game.
not too cheery, but a start.
Wouldn't write off Edwards yet, no southern states have voted yet, that's his space to make a move.

I've met Kerry before, and he comes of EXTREMELY well in person which is why I think he's winning the cacuses. And if you remember how hopeless the race was a couple of months ago, this now 7-candidate horse race is generating so much media attention that by November we might really have a presidential race! And I like what Dean stands for, but he's not electible, he's too left. We need someone who can pull voters from Bush, not divide the stack like in 2000.
Posted by: Jena at January 29, 2004 11:06 AM
Dean is certainly not electable - at least not in a "incumbent" year. Up against a fresh Repub, perhaps - but he's not beating Bush, and I don't care if you're Joe Trippi - you can't honestly think that he could win straight up against GWB as of today.
"Having more delegates" is the most irrelevant thing at this point - what are there - like 25 in these states? There's like 250 up for grabs in one day next week - Dean won't be in the lead after that day, that's for sure. Edwards/Clark may take a little more of the pie, but Kerry might just keep on rolling. The south is going to vote differently than the rest of these folks so far, so it should be fun.
Posted by: djspicerack at January 29, 2004 12:49 PM
Edwards is certainly not dead yet. He's leading in South Carolina and very close in both Arizona and Oklahoma. I have to disagree with your list though. Clark has very little charisma and Dean's attitude would not play well to the general electorate. My ranking would put Edwards well at the top, then leave the others as tied for a distant second place. Not coincidentally, Edwards is my favorite candidate right now, despite his hard-line stance on the drug war. I don't think Kerry would be the disaster that many expect, though. Does any of that cheer you up? :)

I could not agree more with your thoughts on Kerry. It's extremely dispiriting. I'm certainly beginning to grasp what people were talking about with Dean's "unelectability," though. Maybe you and I are coming from the same place, Jay - too smart for our own good, wondering why the hell people are so eager to chow down on whitebread when they've got several varieties of steak (from spicy to gristly) to choose from.
Maybe not my best metaphor ever, but you get the point.

This is the right uniting to give Bush a chance to win so they give support to Kerry. Kerry may be likeable but Kerry makes Al Gore look as charamatic as..as..as..as MC Hammer.
Posted by: pexdiggy at January 30, 2004 06:10 PM
Kerry may not be very charismatic, but he is a deep, thoughtful, and honest man. Someone who has been and done what he says. However, he'll be running against a commercial fabrication. It will be like KRS-ONE running against Ludacris or something.
Posted by: andy at January 30, 2004 07:22 PM
It is very disspiriting. Kerry is not electable unless Bush self-destructs.
Take a look at this flyer to see why Kerry's record won't stand up.
http://dean2004.bmgbiz.net/DeanVsKerry.pdf
Kerry has never been a leader in the senate. He votes for liberal bills, but he never leads the way. Worse, people in Massachussets consider him a thug.
Once voters learn more about Kerry his popularity will crumble, but by then it may be too late.
Sorry Jsmooth995, I'm not feeling very cheery myself.
