Civil Disobedience for the Grey Album

February 24th is Grey Tuesday
It's time for music fans to stand up and demand change from the music industry's copyright cartel.
Tuesday, February 24 will be a day of coordinated civil disobedience: websites will post Danger Mouse's Grey Album on their site for 24 hours in protest of EMI's attempts to censor this work.
DJ Danger Mouse created a remix of Jay-Z's the Black Album and the Beatles White Album, and called it the Grey Album. Despite praise from music fans and major media outlets like Rolling Stone ("an ingenious hip-hop record that sounds oddly ahead of its time") and the Boston Globe (which called it the "most creatively captivating" album of the year), EMI has sent cease and desist letters demanding that stores destroy their copies of the album and websites remove them from their site.
This first-of-its-kind protest signals a refusal to let major label lawyers control what musicians can create and what the public can hear. The Grey Album is only one of the thousands of legitimate and valuable efforts that have been stifled by the record industry-- not to mention the ones that were never even attempted because of the current legal climate. We cannot allow these corporations to continue censoring art...

i'm all for loosening/abolishing restrictions on sampling, and while i think there are some great ideas on the grey album, i found it noticeably sloppy. what's up with all the "best remix project ever" accolades? is a great concept all it takes to become a media darling?

Sloppy? You make me laugh hiphoppers. You just wish you had this much attention is all. you're like "why didn't I think of that and do it in a less sloppy way and get laid". These things are always "freak" occurrences - that's how the world gets changed. Thank god the worst you can say about the grey album is "sloppy". You probably thought Nevermind was "a bit basic" or "too guitar-based" or something!

All I can say it is a great mix of the two genres of music. If leaps in music were not taken music there would not be any hip-hop genres of music.

I'm listening to the Grey Album now and I think one thing must be said in response to the "sloppy" accusation:
The Beatles, pound for pound, made some of the sloppiest music that DIDN'T suck ever for their era. There were far sloppier, simpler, less "tight" bands for the era and they blow donkey testicles compared to the Beatles. It's why the Stones albums of the late 60's stand up better in terms of tone then the Beatles stuff, though overall, the Beatles still beat the Stones in the voting.
So for me to hear the people hating on the album for being sloppy, I'm almost wondering if anyone has done their homework to realize that combining the ease and grace of the White Album with the crash and bang and bombast of the Black album creates something this loose yet taut.
Source material creates new music and this, my friends, is the new wave of hip hop. Which, surprisingly enough takes us right back to whence we started in the roots of hip hop.
Dangermouse, for one, I salute you and for two, I tell you to tell the EMI idiots to take a long walk off a short pier. Holla back.

Relax, no one is hating. I have worked with Dangermouse to help promote his mash-ups in 2002. I simply think he rushed the Grey Album. It's a great concept and I think it would have benefitted from a little "cleaning up", so to speak. I don't think DM expected such a huge response.

Define cleaning up to me, because maybe I listen to a piece as a fan and not a producer/mixer/engineer, hence my lack of ability to hear the sloppiness. To me, I just feel bringing those two together would create something that is inherently much looser then the norm for hip hop. Any more tightening would destroy the looseness of the the beatles tracks, IMO.
But again, I could be wrong. I'm not a producer. And I wasn't accusing hating per se, I just thought people were hating on the concept as a whole and not the production value. You'd be surprised how many people can't stand the idea of a remix album like this on the net...
And, for the record, to me it's the best remix album ever right now because I've not heard an album that can top it. I'd love some other remix albums to listen to, seeing as this one has sparked my interest a lot.
